    Cloud diving

Very nice shot Scott. I love the silohuette hanging in space against the puffy cloud textures. Very surreal to say the least.

If it was me I'd crop out the powerlines on bottom.

I think they detract a tad from a fine capture. Well done!

  1. A very strong portrait. Emotion, frozen, held hostage buy negative space and a lack of distracting visual content. Synthetic Tri-X grain to add a classic PJ tension and classic look. The only change I might suggest is the removal of the thin horizontal visual stripe at the top lower black boundary of the photo. While no doubt a part of the wall it IMO distracts a bit from the overall effect. Well done Piotr! Congratulations.
  2. Very original and nice picture Jim!

I do disagree with you on Newton being the spark that rekindled scientific inquiry. Galileo's courageous stand against the powerful church far earlier was IMO the spark that gave others courage to pursue an enlightened scientific inquiry into the nature of the universe.

This is a wonderful shot Jean! I love the compostion, the overall tonalities and the mood it sets. Well done. It's great to see your portfolio featured this week... Congratulations.

Hi Walter. I really do like the mood & composition of this shot, but IMO you pushed the reflection a little too far. I don't feel you have to obey the laws of physics, but the overall tonalities and color would be more in harmony if the refelction was a tad darker. I've enclosed a variation.

Hi Marc. I finally took the time to look at this photo closely. I feel this is your best shot on PN.

Powerful composition and contrast. A young boy standing out against the sky, and of course the world beneath it. He is alive and looking to the future, although he is uncertain what it holds. A shot in the tradition of Cartier Bresson. Tres bon!

I like this image the most from the ones in your portfolio. The light, color and tone is soft and very pleasant. The composition is straight forward and to the point. The only thing I would change is what appears to be a airplane trail in the sky to the left of the mountains. I would remove it in Photoshop. Some would think that's improper. I guess we all have to make decisions about this on our own.

Superb Kenneth! Nothing to fault here. There B-Y polarizer works without being gaudy. The tone and lighting are wonderfully balanced. The composition is right on. Definitely top drawer. Well done!!

    Congrats on POW Morey.

You've caught great if not original light.

Next time shoot it in moonlight on February 29, with UV filters on Veliva 100F, naked with your 617. No ones done it before and it should please the jaded among us.

Speaking for myself, I just can't stand looking at anything with such beauty anymore. It's just all been done. I think I'll stay home and watch MTV. ;-)

  3. You've caught some very nice alpenglow here Ken. The composition is solid, the color great. I'd say this is a good solid landscape shot. But the thing I notice is the tonalities in the center of the image are lighter than the top and bottom. Part of this is due to the ND grad's hard edge. Part perhaps to the way you adjust levels in PS. A soft edge ND grad is made for a shot like this. I know you can't reshoot it but its easy to lasso the center in photo shop, feather the edges and adjust the center levels to match. See the upload. Some may feel I'm nit picking but I guess I believe the difference between very good and great shots is in the attention one pays to such details.

    Hi Atle,

I feel the composition works to a point.

The white branch crossing the stream is a distraction. IMO the composition is too tight on the right. The flowing stream needs some breathing room. This is a good shot, but not up the very high quality of your best shots.

I'm glad that people have enjoyed discussing this image as it IMO gives much food for thought. My feeling is that its an interesting image and one that speaks well for the site. But not one of my best from the Southwest.

In that sense I agree with Bernhard's comment above.

This is a tough image to make work Vertically. I do indeed wish I had a LF camera and could have used tilt as Paul suggested above.

To understand why this is so see Cedar Mesa ruins

About 99% of the images produced here are in landscape format. If you visit the link above you will see why. The front left of the image is 1 foot from the camera, the bottom right is about 20 feet away. To create this image I focused on the flames and shot at f22.The illusion of a bonfire is pretty amazing. It took me several hours of composing to get it right. My hats off to David Muench who first saw this shot. A true master of composition and shots with incredible depth of field.

If you are wondering what IMO is my best image from the Southwest is I've inserted it below.

I like the fact that the dark area on the lower left wedges the viewpoint up into the image towards the fire. I could lighten it to expose more detail but that would fight the composition as I view it.

I really like the mood and composition here.

It does look a tad too dark on this horrid white PN background, but it looks lovely in a black screen in Photoshop.
