3. Or, no, I think maybe it's norman's inner fart aimed in my general direction
grow up, ffs. if you can't handle alternative definitions of abstract photographs to your own maybe you should be more specific.

4. harrumph. it's a smudge on the glass through which i made the abstraction, if you don't mind. but thanks for noticing.
5. in my view all photos are abstract, so here's one of mine

6. excellent post. i'd love to see some examples and i promise not to plagiarise* *crosses fingers behind back
7. the best jokes have a punchline and the effect is immediate and most people wouldn't want to hear the same joke twice (unless they didn't get it first time). the best photos, imho, don't have a punchline, the effect is not immediate and they can be viewed many times.
8. bear in mind that most galleries present art as a body of work either as a retrospective of someone or a particular genre
9. Are there any objective criteria that apply to the evaluation of abstract photographs
many(as in the case with normal photos). the number of regular polygons visible in the photo, for example. but do we really want objective criteria?
10. in answer to your first question, you can talk about 35mm equivalent focal lengths in the film world but people rarely, if ever, did
11. from wikipedia
According to CIPA guidelines[2] 35 mm equivalent focal length are to be calculated like this: “Converted focal length into 35mm camera” = Diagonal distance of image area in the 35mm camera (43.27mm) / Diagonal distance of image area on the image sensor of the DSC × focal length of the lens of the DSC.
so the crop factor of your camera is 43.27/(229xsqrt(2)) = 43.27/323.85 = 0.1336
which gives a 35mm equiv focal length of approximately 20mm (153.86 x 0.1336)
12. Jeff, interesting character and great photo. You always make the best out of difficult lighting conditions
13. i used the 10D with an adapter from cameraquest and a contax-yashica 2.8/35. i liked that combo. i didn't do much manual focussing through the viewfinder but relied on hyperfocal distance
14. i agree with Richard. the photogs site is much more sympathetic.
15. rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief. does it really make any difference?
