  1. Article is rather uneven, IMO, at time supporting and at others attempting to debunk the so-called Maier Myth. After all, Vivian M did indeed walk around the city (mostly Chicago) with her "charges in tow". I think her work is excellent, being diluted by the profusion of images to which we have been subjected. Look, for example, at the marked-up contact sheets of Cartier-Bresson. If all of his work were suddenly unloaded, what would the resulting reputation be?
  2. This is the only site with which I interact (except for financial sites) that will not remember my sign-in. I have to type my email and password every time (sometimes several times a day) PN requires me to sign in (which it didn't do in the Good Old Days). Why is this so?
  3. Point of information (From the mouth of the domestic equine): Ed Hamrick derived the film profiles in VueScan from those made by Kodak for the old PhotoCD. When that was discontinued, Kodak stopped making the profiles. Al Edgar confirmed this to a bunch of us about fifteen years ago.
  4. Update: After fighting for a while to get my Win 10 system to update to the latest Fall Creators version, and finally succeeding, I am using MS Edge as default browser, and the problem appears to be gone. I don't like Edge as well as I like Chrome, but I do still retain some loyalty to PN.
  5. I don't have a smartphone. Not snobbery, since I've seen amazing pictures taken with them, but for me personally, I can't see the use of one. And I confess, it sometimes bothers me to see people staring at their phones when Real Life is going on around them.
  6. I believe that if you download the latest software from Epson, you will get ICE. It does work better than VueScan's IR clean. I say this as a VueScan user.
  7. Yeah, that surprised me as well. I could have a compromised browser, but I'm not sure how that would affect only the forums on one site. The page referred to above is this very forum. I do clean out the cache on a regular basis.

    Portrait of a lady

Looks a little like a coffee mug, but she has a great expression and wonderful eyes.

    Native America - 28

Very nicely done. I like the "modern" clothing pieces and tight crop. It's also not the cliched old, wrinkled guy.
  10. Update. It stopped again, but the address bar is giving me a message "This page is trying to load scripts for unauthenticated sources". EDIT: Adblock has reported 30 blocked ads on this page.
  11. Images flicker, dates flicker, as though parts of the page keep trying to reload. Sometimes, Esc stops it, as it did on this page, but it usually just keeps on with the flicker. Google Chrome x64, latest build, Flash blocked on this site.
  12. Hello all! Since I now live in a Frozen Waste (Cleveland, OH, USA), I will have time to disassemble and clean lenses for my Mamiya C330f and Bronica ETRS this winter. (Yes, they definitely need it.) I need to get a good spanner wrench, but don't want to pay for the SK Grimes one that everybody loves, but which may not work for some of the recessed lens groups. There is one from Micro-Tools that looks nice, but may not go quite wide enough (62mm). Are there any recommendations? I prefer to buy from a source in North America. Thanks, Les
  13. I didn't, but my usual goal is to suck less, and I have not accomplished that.
  14. Just saw a print from 1917 at a doctor's office. Size was roughly 9x36 inches. Looked like a contact print to me--no grain whatsoever. Exposure must have been 1/4 second or less, since only one or two of the hundred or so people in the pano were slightly blurred from movement. Anyone have an idea what sort of camera was used for this? I've heard of "banquet" sizes like 8x20, but what other sizes were common? Thanks, Les
  15. Nikon Asia is WRONG! No FP synch with SB-24.
  16. Wow! It really does appear that there is a LOT of conflicting opinion out there in the Speedlight Universe. Example: I happen to have an SB-24 that "came with" an 8008s I bought (and sold) because of its lens. According to this official chart on the Nikon Asia site, it is compatible with FP synch on the N90s and F100. The manual for the SB-24 does not mention this. Guess I'll have to try it out?
  17. Hello! Having just rescued a damaged N90s (F90f) by de-corroding the battery chamber and removing the sticky crud from the back, I find that this is the first Nikon SLR to use FP/HSS synch. I've noticed that such a capability would be useful for me. I don't know much about specific models--OEM and third-party--but I do know the basics of outdoor flash fill. My cameras range from that N90s and F100 to a D600 and (maybe someday) a D750. Would an SB-25 cover my needs, and if not, are current Nikon/Yongnuo units "backward-compatible" with my older film cameras? I don't need high-power, since my wedding days are long over; I just like the idea of the HSS for outdoor portraits with wider apertures. Recommendations anyone? Thanks
  18. 1x.com appears to require that each picture have a "gimmick" to get published. Oversaturated color, intense stares, etc.
  19. Perhaps this qualifies, being a part of a huge, decaying Victorian church in downtown Cleveland? D600, 28-105.
  20. I finally fixed it. Since it did not occur in incognito mode, I cleared the cache and it has stopped.
  21. Once again, I have the flickering problem with PN on Google Chrome. (Win 10 x64} This is the ONLY page where this happens. MS Edge is fine--that's how I'm posting this. I have tried blocking Flash, since part of the time, after letting the page flicker for a while, I will see "Plugin Blocked" and the Adobe Flash symbol appear (and flicker) in the address bar. I have reinstalled Flash, and Chrome, and the problem remains. It must be site-specific, AFAICT. Thanks, Les
  22. Some of us may remember the April Fool's hoax about the "digital film". This here sucker appears to actually be real. Yes, it's a gawd-awful kludge as far as I can see, but what matters is that it exists. Not that I'd buy one...
