  1. Lens has been disassembled and reassembled. No change. The screws on the focusing ring only affect the marked stop position, not the actual focus. No problems with the lens flange. Will now look for a parts lens.
  2. Mr. Haws agrees with you. Mismatched helicoids would cause a very large discrepancy in the necessary focus travel. I probably just have a misadjustment of the focusing collar.
  3. This site mentioned previously gives excellent instructions for adjustment. The error is very slight, about 1mm of turn on the focus collar, so I should not need to machine the mount or flange. (I don't have access to a machine shop any longer.)
  4. My 105 is the "double Gauss" version with the larger rear element.
  5. I believe that is correct. As I said above, I found a repair guide for a lens that looks EXACTLY like mine.
  6. I found this VERY helpful description of repair on what appears to be my exact lens! For once, Google actually was my BFF. There seems to be a point in the disassembly where the infinity stop can be adjusted. Since one or two of the bayonet screws appear to have been previously removed, I will assume that this was set incorrectly at that point. When I have time, I will attack this.
  7. Would the error created this way be more than about 1-2mm of travel? That seems to be the degree of inaccuracy involved. I assume the helicoid is something like a three-ply thread?
  8. Hello all: I know there are several related threads, but none seem to answer this particular question. I have a Nikkor-P 105 f2.5 which has been AI'd at some point in its life. It will not focus all the way to infinity on three camera bodies (F3, F4 and D600). Because the infinity mark lines up correctly when the lens is fully "retracted", I suspect a problem with the modified mount (images follow). Other then this, the lens works perfectly, glass is very clean and produces sharp images at portrait distances. Should I remove the flange and look for an unnecessary shim, or problem? I'm not certain it's worth repairing otherwise, although there is a local shop. Thanks, Les
  9. Has Andrew's account been hacked? I have an antique 2880 myself, and in spite of its primitive steam-power system, it still makes excellent prints. I'm guessing that the OP has missed something on his nozzle check.
  10. I'm not sure there IS a problem here. If I look at a film neg with my 16x B&L loupe, it looks like hell. If the OP is using a 12x loupe to evaluate his negs, then it makes me a bit suspicious.
  11. It should be SPI (samples per inch), and I think Canon makes similar silly resolution claims.
  12. I plump for light leak. If the camera has seals, I'd replace them.
  13. I often carry an old film camera like my C330f or my ETRS. I get lots of interesting comments, and somehow seem less like the stereotype currently prevalent. With 35mm film or "full-frame" digital, the 28-105 Nikkor is a great walk-around lens. Sometimes I use the Tamron 19-35. Never more than one lens at a time, though.
  14. The usual advice is to find a sacrificial roll and practice loading, first in daylight and then in the dark. Other common advice is to get a Hewes reel, but that's expensive.
  15. I also have a V, and although I have retired it (I got a Polaroid SprintScan 120), it did everything I needed. I only used the multipass feature a few times, but it worked well for me.
  16. 32 or 64 bit? (Yes, there was a 64 bit XP) What does Device Manager say about the 1394 card? This definitely should work. Check also the firmware on the scanner.
  17. The cellphone comment was one line in a medium-length article. I think Meyerowitz is essentially correct about the changes in the street as a part of "modern" culture. Of course, I suffer from nostalgia like everyone else, but I honestly believe that the texture of life has changed (probably not for better or worse). A few years ago, I scanned some negatives I'd shot back in the early 80s, and the lack of cellphones really struck me. I also noticed less use of phones in Spain and much of the UK outside London. Ditto for semi-rural France, come to think of it. Maybe it's a North American thing?
  18. Large-format portraits. I have the camera and the lens (tripod, etc), but I need to figure out how to get started.

I love his expression and realistic skin. Crop might be a little too tight, but then again, I'm old.
  20. It is much harder to recreate older emulsions, as much as we may love them.
