  1. Scouting out a location pays off! We didn't go to the Discovery Centre, but looking at map details it looks like this was shot very near there. Nice one!

Nice control of lens flare in this, Alf!  This looks super when viewed large!  Looking forward to my trip there in Feb 2017.  Regards, Jeff
  3. I was thinking of facebook as social media.  There, "friends" usually provide lots of loves and likes rather than honest feedback.  That's all.  I guess I'm a cynical optimist!

    tremblant sunrise 2016

Wonderful composition and color, Tony. I can see that it's worth getting up early to get the mist. I love how the spires of dark green spruce contrast the maple & birch. On the downside, the image isn't as sharp as I'd expect. Was this handheld? I have the 70-300 but don't use it with the D810. I find it gets weaker as it approaches 300. However, it seems to works fine on the D7100 for wildlife and centrally focused images. You might want to consider the 300mm f4.0 D ED (launched in 2000) for use on the D810. I have a copy but don't use it much. Thanks for posting this as a reminder that I should be using it! Best, Jeff

This is well composed & processed. Wonderfully delicate light and gentle contrast. The hoodoos have a translucent feel to them. Well done! Jeff
  6. Alf, I think if this had been posted under a different name (e.g. John Doe) that it would have had far more negative comments. To me this image looks like a technical mistake rather than intentional "artistic flare". From my experience, I also agree with David's comment that debris may have caused some of the nastier spots. Regards, Jeff
  7. Henri, I will be heading to Scotland in Feb 2017 and hope to capture these beautiful trees & hills. Thanks for posting this; it's a reminder for me to veer off to this area before heading to Skye. Regards, Jeff

Henri, merci beaucoup for your kind words. Jeff

    Sunset by the sea

Beautiful blues & golds. Love the foreground and left clouds. (Horizon need straightening.)
  10. Very nice, Alf. The pleasant saturation and even lighting is impressive. As an alternative composition, I can imagine a square format which eliminates the reeds on the right and a sliver of the building on the left (to where the roofline begins the diagonal). I just thought of another title too-- "His and Hers"-- but it is not as romantic as yours!

    Grand Anse - Grenada

My eye is immediately drawn to the catamaran, as all lines converge there for me. Wish I was on it right now! There is movement in the masts, which is acceptable, but what surprises me is that the darkish wave at the upper third appears somewhat intact at 3 seconds exposure. Must've been a special night. Nicely done, Tony!

    Very cute! Perfectly composed.
  13. Nikon D70 or D300? My guess is the D70, or D70S. (I know the D300 came out in the fall of 2007 and I didn't buy it until June 2008; and you're usually more cautious to buy than I am!) But there is a spot in the water on the right side (midway down about 1/7 from the edge) that reminds me of one I had on my D300. Nice colors and grain. Regards, Jeff

    Dynjandi View

I purchased the Zeiss 15mm for a recent trip to Norway & Iceland. While this may not be the best composition, I think it is a fine illustration of the lens' capabilities re color, sharpness, and dynamic range (shot at f/4; closest stones are about 1/2 meter away). (please view larger)

    Southeast Iceland

I have a 6-stop ND filter for the Zeiss 15mm but elected to go for a faster shutter speed and maintain ripples in the pond. Any thoughts? (please view larger)
  16. Hi Alf. Great that there is such apparent movement in the sky. I really like the sharpness of the boats and masts on the left. However, the movement on some of the other masts, especially the second tallest from the right is a bit of a distraction and somewhat spoils this area for me. I'm wondering why you chose 1/2 @ f/8 ISO 160 versus something faster that could have eliminated the issue. Or perhaps the mast movement doesn't bother you. Regards, Jeff

I've never seen this before. Very nice of you to post this!

    Untitled

Very unusual and well-thought composition. I'm imagining it without the thin sand/gravel forefront; I see that it matches the tree tones, but it doesn't quite work with the rest.
  19. The dynamic range is fabulous. But compositionally, this is not one of your best Tony. I like the right half as a vertical, because the sky is superb. The left half is not so good. Also, your sensor may be dirty as I see tiny spots in the upper left and upper center right. Regards, Jeff

Great crisp feeling in the foreground. Like the mist line! Think it would be better if the sunburst was clean & crisper too.

    Reflection

    Very nice foreground and reflection.

    sunrise

I like the soft blue and exposure time on the water. But, to me, the greens and yellows seem a bit oversaturated-- they're almost glowing. There are many spots especially visible in the sky on the left that should be erased/cloned out.
