Hi Alain.  Thanks for your comment.  Used a polarizer very slightly to darken the foreground brook and see into the water, but unfortunately by doing so it created a slightly darkened sky in mid left.  I think it can be fixed if I spent more time with processing.  Jeff

    Wispy Hilton Falls

Hi Javed, this was a single exposure.  To control the light I used the "magic cloth" technique.  There is info and tutorials online.  Regards, Jeff
  3. Peter, this is the nicest of the series.  The colors and contrasts are what make it really pop.  Jeff
  4. This has texture and depth, unlike some HDR.  Thanks for posting this.  Am planning on Hawaii in Dec 2017.  Perhaps I may contact you privately to pick your brain re special places & such?  Regards, Jeff

Thanks everybody.  Larry, I think I got lucky that the break in the clouds occurred as it did to add the reflection by the two smaller rocks that helped with the lead-in.  Regards, Jeff

Thanks Janine and Chris.  Chris, it's the "magic cloth" technique.  There are tutorials & such on the web.  Basically, I used a black cloth to hold back the exposure in the upper left, giving it about 2-3 seconds and the rest 15.  It's a bit of trial and error, but I was pleased with this too.  Regards, Jeff

    Watkins Glen State Park

Very pretty.  Been through the area a few times but there was no parking and packed with people.

    Tar Vat Reflection

Thanks Tony.  Thanks Larry.  The stuff on the water is lily pads.  Jeff
  9. Sandy, I also see that you spot metered.  Perhaps the spot was on a light point, hence the darkness.  Have you tried matrix metering?  Or spot meter both the trees and the sky, and then use the appropriate grad; with this method you'll want to use manual mode.  Regards, Jeff

    Laguna Sucia

Very artistic!  Wonderful sky, foreground tree and lake.  Am trying to imagine what this would look like perhaps 1/3 to 1/2 stop brighter.  Cool!
  11. The abstract effect works well for this.  Very soft and calming.  I have the D5300 too but haven't tried its multiple exposure.  Or did you do this in post-processing?  Regards, Jeff

    Ferrata Tomaselli

It's on my list.  Is it possible to take a bad shot here?  Likely not.  Thanks for sharing.
  13. Nice view down your driveway!  Clouds look great, but the trees are still a bit dark-- perhaps a stop or more.  You should likely clean up the lens flare at the tree on left; pink spots on its upper left, and a yellow one on the right.  Do you get any snow in winter?  If so, this must look awesome.  Regards, Jeff

    Wispy Hilton Falls

The lighting was extremely challenging and the falls was a trickle. There were no streams upstream and downstream! Used an unusual technique to balance the lighting in-camera.

  22. Hi Alf, I have come back into this after reviewing both.  Would be nice if the other shot had the intensity of yellow (which can be added) and more highlights on tips of random reeds.  They are there in the other, but perhaps not brought out to their fullest. And what's that little ball 2/3 up on the left-- a sheep or a hay bale?  It's not in the other shot, and appears to be cloned out.  I still hate all the flare spots-- large and small, red to green-- but I give you credit for creating buzz!  Cheers, Jeff

    Pebble Beach, Marathon

Thanks Tony. Interesting that you chose to comment on this image: the editors of Outdoor Photography Canada nearly put this on the cover of Issue #38 rather than Cave Point Sunset. I think the blue tinge on the rocks makes sense because the blue sky acted as a giant reflector. Jeff
  24. Hi Tony, Yes, I used google maps & earth, and studied other photographs of the area. Particularly useful was a photo of these two islands & trees from a higher perspective. I estimated your position based on the gap in the islands and trees in your photo. Looks almost due north, but slightly NNW, with the sunrise coming from the right (east). Jeff
  25. I like your placement of buildings and blocks of color between the masts. The image has a peaceful/tense thing going on. Interesting.
