25 Hours to Solstice

About 3 times each winter I head to this area of Lake Huron because the snow, ice, and sunsets are different every time. Snow came early this year. Thanks for looking.

100 DSC_2688 fix v2

Nice composition. I think a shallower depth of field works well here. Nice green & light to contrast the gloom.

Reynisdrangar

Whenever I've been there the tide's been in and this angle was impossible, and yet this is the classic angle. Sure would've been top-notch if you were treated to a dramatic sky of red! Nice composition.

Thor hammer-Bryce

Kamala, You need to walk about 200 paces down the Navajo Loop Trail to the left from the Sunset Point parking area for a clear view of Thor's Hammer. Best to get there about 20 minutes before sunrise and hope the clouds part momentarily as the sun cracks the horizon! Jeff
5. Alain, you must stop posting all these gorgeous pictures; the place will soon be overrun, like Iceland! Jeff

Winter at Christmastime

What a wonderful Christmas card! I miss Norway. Thanks for posting this, and best wishes, Jeff
7. This is wonderfully clean and crisp! Beautiful.

Peter, go back in winter! Regards, Jeff

Bryce Canyon VIII

I've been there many times and know it well. This interpretation looks like a diorama, as if the hoodoos are stalagmites. For me, it doesn't work. Regards, Jeff
10. Peter, I've been through there several times at different times of the year and it's always been raining or snowing, and extremely windy. Lucky you to have experienced abnormal conditions! Jeff

Vestrahorn Sunset

Peter, thanks for your comment. Got there as the sunlight was quickly being lost. Had maybe 10 minutes before all the pink was gone. Upon my return home I could hear fine grinding as I focused and zoomed my 16-35. There were faint traces of powder-black sand from the beach that made its way inside! I justify it was worth it; besides I think that I had a bad copy and I did OK on a trade-in for a prime! Regards, Jeff
12. I recognized this location immediately, and was stunned how great and clear the weather is in this image. And, mostly, how you and I "see" so differently! But I couldn't see what you see & got in this. Neat. I'd be tempted to crop the hint of foreground ledge in the left corner. Regards, Jeff
13.
Tell everyone to close their eyes and when you say "open" have them open them! Seriously. Other than that, you'll be fine with what you have. Positioning of people as mentioned above is critical. I'm predominantly a landscape photographer, and I use ultra wide lenses to exaggerate the size of foreground objects. So getting everyone on the same plane is important. Getting far back at 55mm will help.

Northern lights (22)

Should be used as a cover for a Norway tourism guidebook!

Alain, I love how you captured the aurora in the perfect orientation and at the perfect time! Jeff
16. This is super, Alf! Excellent shutter speed in the water. Holds my interest to view every detail. And so, of course, I see spots in the sky (one in the clouds by the blue sky, one near the edge of the frame above, and a hair-like one at one o'clock from the first spot) and a bit of green fringing where the mountain meets the sky along the right. All stuff that can easily be fixed. This is really nice to look at for a long time. Is this a single capture? Regards, Jeff
17. I totally agree with you, Peter. This fast shutter gives power to the falls-- like hundreds of guillotines! Slow shutters can sometimes make falls appear too lame & milky.
18. It's not sharp when viewed large, but the composition is stunning. Love the wilted wire fence and each tree. You could likely sell piles of greeting cards of this! Regards, Jeff

Roar

Very pretty and wonderfully balanced.

Portknockie Cherry

Ian, I like the unusual viewpoint. The sky is superb, as are the softly lit rocks! I remember seeing an image of yours of Bow Fiddle, perhaps from 10 years ago, and I was determined to go there on my first trip to Scotland in June 2008. Got there but got nothing. Went again in Fall 2015 and got a good one from beach level, but sure wish I had this sky! Re Larry's comment, all looks sharply focused to me. The clouds appear unusual, but that's due to a longer exposure, or perhaps multiple exposure. Heading to Scotland in Feb 2017 but won't be visiting the east. Regards, Jeff
21. I like this original and humorous perspective. And I much prefer this faster shutter speed over your other version. Regards, Jeff
22. It's not the sharpest image when viewed large. But I like the bold placement of the sun at the edge of the frame, and its beams-- especially the one that runs down the mountain to light the town!

Blahylur, iceland

Nice to see something from Iceland that is off the beaten track.
24. Wonderfully crisp foreground and mysterious background, connected by delicate flows. This is super. Very calming. Regards, Jeff
