Very nice. Good exposure and focus. However, the horizon is tilted right and there are many specks in the sky on the left that ought to be cleaned up before you print. I noticed that you posted another image of this location that was taken after sunset; unfortunately, it's out of focus, perhaps due to the long exposure and tripod movement?

I love the mood and colors. While I'm a big fan of anchoring an image with rocks & such; this rock is just too BIG-- it dwarfs the castle. Lucky you too have had the experience of seeing this. I've never been to Outer Hebrides, and this makes me want to go. Thanks for posting this. But are midges there too? Regards, Jeff

Hi Alain, Thanks. I viewed this through 15 & 20mm lenses but I felt they were too wide. Using either of these I would have had to get closer and descend the pebbled ridge into a danger zone. I know that I made the correct decision because had I done that I may not have been able to write about it, and I certainly would have lost all my gear and this image. (If you go back to Iceland, you should certainly check out this area.) This is the most violent surf that I've ever seen and been in! On the technical of the making of this image, I shot at many speeds. 1/500 captured spray in mid-air and waterfalls over the background sea stack. A 6-stop smoothed the surf to mush. This image is a 9-shot multiple exposure, and was the last one I got before getting knocked on my back and swamped! Scary thoughts went through my head at that moment. By the way, I have decided to take a break from photo.net. Some of my recent images are getting bombed and have very few comments. This is not a new phenomenon, as I see that an image rated 6 a few years ago is lucky to get a 5 today. And this is why some vets on here no longer ask for ratings and prefer that their egos ride on the 6s and 7s of years past. I guess my ego has also been somewhat bruised! My biggest joy is the experience of taking the photograph! But, upon reflection, I feel that my processing is not adequate and that I could get much more out of the RAW file. So I will be spending time learning and implementing software which I hope will give my images a "facelift" for posting and especially for printing. All the best, Jeff

Tony, there is a vertical in my other Iceland folder; in fact, you commented on it last year. It is a bit closer. These chunks are quite small-- perhaps the size of a cantaloupe (which you can likely judge by comparing them to the size of the smaller rocks and grains of sand)-- and so getting down lower would mean that the camera would almost be sitting on the sand! Yes, this was a fun morning and the beach was jammed with photographers. As you can imagine, this can limit one's composition choices. Regards, Jeff

Thanks Tony. I have Lightroom 5.7.1 and a few books on it, but I haven't had the time to get into it. And I have the Nik Collection and Adobe CS5, but again haven't spent any time with them. Have been using Capture NX 2.4.6 because it is really simple, but I know not the best. Hopefully in May (after income tax time), I will have some time to begin learning how to use these other programs. Thanks for your offer! Jeff

Thanks Pierre. Thanks Tony. I see what you mean with the foreground. I didn't process this properly as I see that the details are there in the raw file. A few years ago I always exposed so the histogram was more mid-to-dark, but noticed that it was then difficult to brighten the shadows. Now I expose more mid-bright; I guess I need to learn to then process the highlights downward. I know the details are there in my most recent postings, but I haven't had the time, energy, or expertise in the software to do it "right", I guess. No excuse, I know. Perhaps this explains why many of these most recent images are getting poorer ratings than I had expected or seen in my mind's eye. I think I will take some time off from PN-- like 6 months to a year-- and try to become proficient with photo-software, and then revisit all my images for reprocessing. I have become quite discouraged with the wealth of experts, sometimes anonymous or new, that provide negative ratings with no commentary as to why. Thanks for staying upbeat! I hope all is well with you, Jeff

The pinks and blues here are very subtle and best seen when viewed large. I was at Godafoss the previous night and took a few shots such as Gone By Morning, in which the foreground to the brink in the upper right where gone by morning, which in this picture is a section of ice that covered an area from where the snow stops in the upper right to the snow covered rock cutting across the brink to the left-- an area perhaps the footprint of a large house! Quite remarkable considering the previous day dozens of photographers were walking and standing on the area. Thanks for your comments, Jeff

Hi Arthur. Yes, I wanted to get closer and lower and include more close-up beach, but then I would've drown for sure and the equipment would've been destroyed! The waves were very violent and the clouds ever-changing. My thought of not including much sky above the sun was to increase mood and drama. I have done this other times (e.g. see my Ontario in Winter 1 folder), and I think it works well. Thanks again, Jeff
