  1. That's great. I don't think I've ever seen a night shot of Gooseneck. Excellent idea. I agree with Craig though. Did you take any from a lower vantage point? I know it's not the easiest place to negotiate, especially at night.

    The Race Track

This came out great. It is very dramatic. I keep trying to get some HDRs that don't look like HDRs and rarely succeed. I haven't been back to Racetrack since I started doing HDRs but am dying to go. I think you did a good job with the smoothing. The foreground, IMHO, looks a bit bright and contradictory though in regards to the sky. At first I thought it was a very stormy morning. It looks like there is a dark band across the top 10% of the photo which doesn't seem to fit in with the other sunrise clouds. Also, the horizon looks a little slanted down to the right. No, I haven't had my coffee yet this morning.

Lastly, and separately, if anyone with any clout at Photo.Net is reading this, why not start a Gallery for HDR? It seems to me to be a different art form from, for lack of a better term and no offense intended, straight photography. I'd love to browse through HDR landscapes. I think they're very interesting and dramatic and fun to look at.

    Mesa Arch no. 2

It's somewhat odd to see this view without the iconic orange flaming color on the underside of the arch and the sun coming up in the background. In a way you are daring for offering it up here. It really is a beautiful view any time of day. Great shot. Thanks for going against the grain.
  2. Low tide at Bowling Ball Beach on the Mendocino County Coast. I was hoping for a

better sky but it was a flat gray day. It is what it is. For those going to Mendocino,

check it out at low tide. It's pretty neat. It's a 15 minute walk from the road. I've heard

at high tide the rocks are all under water.

  3. I recently calibrated my monitor and am amazed at how dark prints still look. That being said, I think yours is A-OK. I must say the sky in the upper left looks a little unnatural relative to the rest of the sky. I do like that it is HDR but doesn't have that typical unreal HDR look. It's a beautiful photo.

    New morning.

Comments and criticisms appreciated. I overslept so I was in a ridiculous hurry and

didn't have time to set up. I would have preferred a shot a few minutes before this. Of

course, I was driving and almost running in to the ocean looking over my shoulder. I

    hate that feeling.

I like the general idea of this photo but I must say I find it distracting. I can't get past the dark reverse L band and the front tricycle tire being out of focus.

I LOVE the foreground on this. It's fantastic. I agree with TH. It looks like there are a lot of clouds lurking up there. If there was some way to bring those out more this would be awesome.
  4. Thanks all for the comments and constructive criticism. Christal, I do appreciate your kind and encouraging words of support. I sure didn't mean to offend anyone by my cropping. What little self esteem I had was just similarly cropped. :)

This is an odd looking photo and not at all what I had in mind when I took it. I'm trying to learn how to use an 85mm tilt/shift lens on a DSLR. I wanted to just throw together a few images and voila- Golden Gate pano. It was a very hasty affair. I stitched together several shots for this and used Photomerge to put them together. I had hoped to keep more of the bridge and foreground tower but this was the best I could come up with after everything merged. I don't quite understand that. Now the point of view has grown on me like a fungus. I sort of like the enormity of the tower in the foreground center. It may even look OK without the right third at all. The road is very abruptly cut off. While distracting perhaps, I think the bridge road and then the cables in the upper left help frame the main tower, in a parallelogram sort of way. Fortunately, it gives me more than enough reason to go back again and try for better. For those of you who haven't been to the Marin Headlands, if you are ever in SF area, check it out. It does not disappoint.

    Evening Star

Holy Moly! That's the photo I wanted to take. I was there about 2pm on 1/9. It was cloudy and gray and a ow tide but not as far out as this. I saw a starfish at the bottom of a rock at sand level but didn't have the fortune of tides for this one. Fantastic. I'd go back every weekend if it weren't a 6 hr drive. Great shot.

    Ecola State Park

I think the composition is great. The rocks in the left foreground and the trees pique my interest in a way that makes me think extending the scene to the left a bit more might also work well.
