Sometimes the background is more distracting that it is worth. This

shot was one of those. I like the photo a lot more with the

background in B/W that in color. Your thoughts and comments are

    greatly apprecaited.

Thanks for the info. Hey... you should check out "Auto FX Software"'s "Dreamsuite." I'm a huge fan of Photoshop CS and I use it for ALL my photos. I discovered the Dreamsuite software and it does the soft look in a one click process. It allows you to adjust the tint, the amount of ghosting, the amount of blur etc. and it is extremely simple to achieve the affect.

Shhh.... don't tell anyone. LOL. It really is worth a look and not very expensive.

Indeed! My thoughts exactly. We are somewhat similar. There are just some shots in which as you said the softening just works.

What software do you use for you effect?

    UnTitled.

You have some wonderful, colorful flower shots. I like these quite a bit.

Great color saturation. Nice D.O.F. The blue background really nicelly accentuates the yellow.

    Well done!

  1. Goodness, I don't know how I'd shoot this shot. All that white at the bottom has got to be crazy difficult to shoot. It appears to be a little to hot in this shot but I don't know how to tell you to improve because I know the nightmare that shooting all that white with action above has to be a challenge. Decent action shot.

The stool in the backgroun sorta detracts from the overall picture in that it is jutting out of the boys body and tends to draw focus away from the subject. You may have wanted to catch an angle that would have separated those two. The angle is also difficult in that I would recommend a slightly lower angle BUT then you'd probably not get enough of the fire so I would say this is an ok angle. Also, the focus seems a touch soft. Perhaps a little sharpening would benefit the shot?

Nice subject. I'm reminded of Boy Scout Days. :-)

  2. The background and foreground are similar enough that it doesn't give you ebough contrast. Perhaps you could PS out background to a color more complimentary? Also the focus, where not bad, seems a TOUCH soft on her eyes as though your autofocus chose to pick her hair or just beyond her eyes so that her eyes are just a tad soft.

    Cute girl.

WOAH! Good catch on the gum! She was chewing gum which I didn't catch until later in the shoot. I will PS it out. That's why I love this site. Oh... and as for equipment, I was blessed with an overcast day that lit the scene nicely. I use a Nikon D70 and for this shoot I was primarily using a 70-300 nikon zoom lense.

Thanks again for the good catch and for taking your time leaving a comment.

YES! I couln't agree more. I like the moodiness of it and NOT looking at the camera. This girl liked to have that portrayed and it's in most of her shots. She actually has a great smile and I think next time we work togetehr I'm going to push for more of that.

    Thanks for the thoughts.

Rob. Great shot and unique angle. I also like the affect. It seems a lot of people don't care for that or at least the ones that don't care for it are vocal about it. :-)

Good job and interesting to look at.

Thanks very much Rob. Appreciate the comments. Did you happen to see the version of this with th ebackground in B/W. I think I like this one in all color more. There's another in the series where I did the background in B/W that I actually much prefer that way.

If you get a chance, take a look.

    Thanks,

    Joe

  3. Thanks Rob. In the end, I do what my eye tells me to do. The family loved the shot so as long as they're the one's paying and they are happy, I'm happy. :-)

Thank you so much for stopping in and voicing your thoughts. I greatly appreciate it.

And yes, to answer the quest - I was going for the "Soft" look. Although it is an affect achieved through post processing and not a filter.
