    Portrait

Actually that's not lens flair, but rather glow from a soft light source. and she was moving, and frozen with a flah (slow sync) There was no compositing... and mostly it was the eyes that caught me. I'm thinking you might be completely right tho, about the left... it's kind of weak. I'll try a cropping of this (not completely, as that light ballances her somewhat, but... less might be better.

Actually... Jeff mentioned the only complaint I had about the pose... the shorts just seem contrived, or it might be the hand over them that seems odd. Other than that it's a well posed... posed image. And the sepia works well here. Nice one ;)

PS> Keep submitting... or I'll feel even more guilty for not ;) besides... well... just keep it up :)

    Tender Moments

Why? I'm sure this isn't the only picture of them from this wedding. It's a shot that says something specific, and gets rid of all the distractions. Who gives anything about the dress... and in this case... the eyes aren't necessary. You wouldn't see em in this pose even if you were looking right at their faces. This is a simple, clean shot, showing an affectionate moment, and nothing more is necessary to show it.

Correct me if I'm wrong and this is the only shot from the entire wedding ;)

Nice composition, darks playing agianst lights. the only thing I find distracting is his ear... it's a bit too strong an element in here(for my liking) but it's a minor complaint... Really dig this...

  1. Total Norman Rockwell expression. Unbelievable... looks posed but genuine. Nice portrait. I like this cropping like this, but wouldn't mind seeing more. But... this is all about the espression, not the clothing, or his body... just the face, so for that... nice work. However, body language can also be telling in a person's expression, so if it's a great facial expression, and then it's accentuated or supported by equally good body language, even better ;)

  2. ... vignetting. The diagonal box doesn't add anything to the photo, and also does make us wonder... what're we not seeing. The background looks probably fine to leave, or if you're covering something up... maybe just continue the green out to the edge. It's possible it's the black that is disturbing. The black and green have a lot of contrast between them, and create a strong visual element, that draws attention away from your subject. Whereas usually (IMO) vignetting is supposed to lessen the impact of a distracting background and bring the focus back to the forground subject. May we see this without the vignetting? :) please ;)
  3. This was a bit of a grab shot, and a bit posed... I took 2 more after this, but as soon as she knew what I wanted, it was tough to get it. I think the single out of focus rose is a bit distracting, but I like how close the rest of the image is to a really nice portrait. I think it'd be too tight a crop without the rose. Tell me what you think? There are some examples of alternate cropping shown in the comments. Thanks for your feedback and or ratings.
  4. what you mean Chip, about having to read the description first to give it context, but... I guess, to me, it would only have truely failed if after knowing the concept it still didn't work ;)

General Question to anyone... do you need to "get it" without the statement, is that the goal? or is it ok to have that statemt to go with it?

actually... that's an interesting point... remembering the eyes... the light on the skin looks good, and I personally don't mind the darker side... but missing out on the iris, and the pupil... Also her eyes aren't very dialated... (maybe you should try those strobes again ;)... nits of course
  5. ... by the barrel. Is this a common motif for you? Don't get me wrong, it's cute, just funny... kids by the barrel full ;) very candid, I love the expression on the girl in front. She's looking bashfull almost, smiling, but ready to say nope, Im not gonna pose. Might be a little too tight a crop on the right side, but I'm not sure what was there, this might be best as is.

... looks like it anyway. The composition is quite nice. Brings you back to the face, but leads you out as well... this pose shows off her nice feature set... doesn't look like you're "hiding" flaws (maybe too young to have any???)

    anyway... nice work

  6. yes, this is what she looked like smelling the flowers. this was the first of three shots smelling the flowers... the second two turned out very posed and awkward. I was taking a few shots to share her B-Day present, and saw this one. So... it's really about her AND the roses. I didn't decide, oh let's show some woman with some roses. Most of the shots I've taken thus far for the circle, have been, grab shots... they were there, I took them. I am thinking it might be appropriate to take some planned portrait, we'll see ;)

Thanks for the input Doug ;) I think more important than cropping, is to note these items that are troublesome and apply them to future photographs. This was a grab shot, and a learning experience. And a whole lot of fun. Any other comments are welcome. Thanks again.

...they're her own, touching her neck, as she stretches it out. I understand that most people read it differently, and if I had posed this, I probably would have framed it vertically... but it was a grab, on a plane, and thanks to the feedback, I have some things I will watch for next time. BTW, Doug, if you wouldn't mind... send me the crop you were talking about... I couldn't get it to look right, just looked like a face with no context... nothing to ground it. Even though the fingers look like they might be choking her, the detail of the ear, fingers and hair frame the face, and give it a home ;) without them... it floats, but... please, show me how you think it would work, I'd like to see it.

...She's totally stealing the show. She's got that eye that's not only framed by those dark blue hands, but staring right at you... and then... he's looking at her, so even when you try and focus on him... he's not the focal point. She's also a bit higher in the image, and takes visual presidence. He looks like he's about to do what she's doing ;) I like the warmer tones in this one.

    -Just my read.

Awesome... better make a poster and put it up on that kid's wall!!! A little tighter crop might be nice, but this is good as is. nice stopping of the motion, nice and sharp. Like it!!!-
