...but I'm thinking you might want to bring in more light, so that you can expose less. The eggs are a bit over, and everything else (except the yellow part of the block) is dark. You might try using a white piece of mat board, or a piece of cardboard covered in tin foil as a bounce (behind and to the right? fill in some of the really darks. I also think this would work really well in Sepia, with a little bit of dark haloing? :) Just my thoughts. That's a nice whip BTW

I could have sworn, looking at the thumbnail, that you had somehow done a composit to make this look like there're two faces (kissing each other, but upside down) then my eyes focused, and I could see that this was a single picture. Interesting what our eyes can do to us. The nearest rock that is out of focus and cuts diag across the lower right, is a bit distracting, you might just want to clone/crop it out. Or if you have the luxury reshoot a bit higher ;)

I think the strongest point of this photo is the almsost symmetry you've shown. Interesting :)

  1. You've made an excellent choice in painting the sky this way... :) What a perfect complimentary color scheme. Did the sky do it just for you? I think the seagul adds something to this picture... It's on it's way out of the picture. The implication is that this moment isn't permanent. Very nice Verna ;)
  2. Actually that's not the method I've done. I'll look at it, but I actually separate the three channels into 3 separate grayscale images. Then discard the blue (most of the time) and then combine the green and red channels for the effect I want. I never just "convert to gray" though :)

WOW... I'd never tried that... it's definitely a quicker way to do that. Thanks. Less post conversion control, but nice anyway. Thanks!

As for the wide angle... it was at 35mm which is the equivalent of a 52.5mm (21.33mm ccd instead of 35mm film). I wonder what this would look like at a 105mm Equivalent tho, since don't most portraits get done at 105mm or something like that... a more flattering angle of view?

All I can say is brrrr... it looks like it's really cold in this shot. I'd like to see it ballanced a little warmer (less blue) I really like the concept tho. Little creative kid. Might be fun to have the creation/painting out of focus in the background. I'd also like to either have the context of the leg or no leg at all. The leg read as arm at first glance, but could be cute if it was clearly a leg ;) I like that the head has a place to rest (against the right side, and it's pointing in to the picture, with just enough room above, so as not to feel cramped.

Can't wait to see the later pics ;)

I like the idea of the flowers. Maybe she's in to tulips? I figure they must, in some way, be important to her. So if that's the case, it's a way to bring something in that tells something about her.

The pose... her chin-rest seems a bit forced or uncomfortable, a little like she's just holding it there so it's above the flowers. Also the bend at her wrist seems a bit precarious.

I think this might have worked a bit better if she had both of her hands overlapping each other, and her elbows on either side holding her up. You could also play off the implied shape that the tops of the flowers make.

Also, I'd like to see a little more of the left flower, so that all of them look deliberate.

...eyes twitch one way, then the other... and a cute little growl (don't touch my chew toy), and then not a second later... hah hehh hah (best panting noise I could spell) and a pet me look :) Only nit I have is the hands... would have seemed a little more natural without them. Lucky to have such a looker :)

...this is soooooooo cute. What an adorable shot... love the eyes. A tad bit more light for the eyes would be nice, but this... this will do just fine. Can we have the cute pup, please?

...the radial zoom looks right... looks like you tracked him in and zoomed at same time. Excellent use of your tools to get an effetct that doesn't look like a tool.... and it's not only a nice job WITH the effect... the effect is appropriate. Well done. Nice movement. EXCELLENT...

does she look distressed? as for the quirky choices... I didn't want to lose the detail that defined her look. As soon as those elements are softened it loses any definition and just looks un controlled. I'm pretty sure in those old movie star pictures they've got dead sharp features with glowing skin. Why did I light the neck... I shot this on an airplane. The light is coming from the window, and I thought it looked interesting. So, it's not a studio shot, if it were, I'd probably done several things a bit different, as it is, it was just a lucky shot. Thanks for the quirky comments ;)

This is really a nice one Mark. The DOF fading the sea foam out is really nice. I wouldn't crop it any differently. I might try shooting a little more inline with her body so as not to crop off her legs... but that would be another image, not a substitute for this. Really nice B+W.
  3. ...maybe a little too close, I'd like to see as much of the mother's shoulder as you see, here, of the childs shoulder. As it is, kinda looks like the child is holding a disembodied head. The lighting on the childs face is great tho... looks studio lit to me. :)

...interesting graphic breakup. The only thing I think detracts from this is the non-verticle verticle. IT's so close, but not. Although, maybe that's why this seems to work. Maybe if it were verticle, it'd be absolutely the centerline, and the photo would lose some of it's tension. Super colors and shapes.

...some of it was her suggestion, but the image is my manipulation. :) I do give her credit for pointing out what some percieve as imperfections, and what might be distracting to many viewers. Thanks ;)
