LOL
The location on Earth is essentially irrelevant to the phenomena! - it takes place at the top of the atmosphere - All you need is a clear sky, an acute angle of insidence with the atmosphere from the sun, and the right solar conditions about 8 to 15 days earlier! Cloud often accumulates over land - some would say that a boat anyplace near the poles in winter is the prime location!
I have to disagree about the noise too, but only from personal experience - I heard them on 1st December 2005 in Iceland!
Have you posted any other shots of the Lights?
Regards, Nick.

I would loose the light trails, in order to focus the viewer's attention upon the fabulous Aurora! - Surely you captured this without the light polution? I love your shot, but would prefer an isolated image of the lights!
LOL
You can also see them in Greenland, Iceland, The faroe Islands, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia on clear nights in winter (this is not just a North American phenomena!) - you can also see the Aurora Australis (Southern lights), near to the antartic circle! They are the result of charged particles produced by solar storms bombarding the earths atmosphere at an acute angle (caused by the earth's tilt in winter time). The colour of the Aurora depends upon which elemental particles are ionised in the process. - Did you hear them too?
Regards, Nick.

Great Fun!

Please feel free to comment - Regards, Nick.

The added sky does not work, perhaps converting to grayscale might help?

Thank you Thomas, but like Pete, I feel as though it adds to the bleakness of the scene.
Thanks Pete for your kind words, it is very photographed, but then it's setting is quite remarkable! You are of course quite right about the gull!
Regards, Nick.

As ever, I would value your opinions - Regards, Nick.

TOO BIG TO LOOK AT!!!

The artifact from the dirty scan/print is a little distracting - otherwise this is most pleasing!

Hello Rony
Your photograph is most errotic. This, I think is a result of the voyeristic nature of the composition. The Black and White works very well, and suits your models skin tones remarkably well!

Hi Misha, this series of 4, is much more successful than the series of 3 also posted!

Hello Liutauras
I love the humour here. Is there any way of making the apperture completely round to heighten this effect?
Regards, Nick.

Hello Misha.
I love the natural expression on your model's face. There is joy and movement in this photograph!

As usual the lighting was only that which was available, and I think the exposure was 1/30s at f/2.8.
Thanks Colin, I always feel justified when you like my work - the same goes for you Pete. Justin will be flattered when I tell him that he has been likened to Teddy Sheringham!
Thanks Annie, I try to create a natural feel when I take someone's portrait.
Thanks Maurik - you are quite right about my odd choice of film, and usually I would prefer my autofocus EOS with a 50mm lens at f/1.4 (or my Leica if I'm not a little tipsy!) in this situation, but The Hasselblad is the camera that I had with me, and I am really still experimenting with it. I was away for the weekend hoping to take landscapes with it, but the weather was rotten, so we stayed indoors by the fire.
Thanks for your comments, and glad to see you contributing here, as you always have something valuable to say!
Fond regards, Nick.

Hello Ned, and Happy Christmas!
This shot is wonderful. The composition is most pleasing and proportionally very aesthetic. The stream and waterfall leads the eye nicely into the frame. The snow adds to the tonal range beautifully and the plane of white in the foregraound counterpoints the dark sky well!
I like the "dust" in the sky as it resembles snow flakes or early evening stars. The larger dust marks, and hair impressions in the main body of the frame are distracting though, and I have had a go at getting rid of them in photoshop.
Fond regards, Nick.

Pete
There was nothing written on the road down the centre - I think what you are mistaking for lettering are the illuminated Christmas Decorations hanging across the street.

Thank you Sondra, it is an odd place and does have the feel of a Toy Town.
Thank you Curtis, I agree with you about the sky, but I am a fan of "naturalistic" photographs, and in the dead of winter, close to 66 degrees North, skies seem to be a little blank. Perhaps you are right about the crop, and I submit a tighter one here for comparrison - I do however wonder if a dramatic sky would detract even more from what was my focus for the photograph - namely the town?
Thank you Colin, I too like the head land. With only 4 fours of daylight at this time of the year, this is as beautiful as the light got. I must return in the spring or summer so see what nature has to offer.
Thank you Pete, it is an odd little place, but does have a good number of excellent attractions such as museums and galleries, and far too many superb restaurants for the size of the population. Slough is an unfair comparrison (I share Betjeman's feelings on that subject!), but it reminded me a lot of Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands.
Best wishes, and fond regards, Nick.

Great photo......but a shame that the mothers head is not in the frame - that would have been a truely remarkable image indeed!
Regards, Nick.

Thanks Mario - is this the sort of thing you ment, or would you crop further?
Regards, Nick.

As ever, I would value your comments - Kind regards, Nick.

Kim, I like the composition - you have produced a photograph which is real fun! If you were to set it up again, try not to crop out the bottom of her right breast, and including the elbows may or may not be more aesthetic.
Regards, Nick.

This is one of the first photographs that I took with my new EOS. I was hoping for a
naturalistic look in portrature, and opted to use only available light. I'm loving my Orange
filter - what do you think?
