pjmeade 12 Posted January 2, 2006 Hello Nick, allegedly, this is the most photographed sculpture in Iceland. I'm going to guess that you have photographed into the sun, specifically to give the impression of Norsemen heading out into the south on a "raid and trade" expedition. The limited palette is good and gives a very hard edge to the image, in keeping with the Norsemen. The one thing I wish you had done, was clone out the gull. Regards. Pete Link to comment
nicholasprice 0 Posted January 2, 2006 Thank you Thomas, but like Pete, I feel as though it adds to the bleakness of the scene. Thanks Pete for your kind words, it is very photographed, but then it's setting is quite remarkable! You are of course quite right about the gull! Regards, Nick. Link to comment
Todd Kowalski 2 Posted January 3, 2006 Hello Nick, Personally I like the "blown out" aspect in that it does add to the cold harshness of the climate and geography. Though I do agree about the gull!Well Done my friend, Todd Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted January 7, 2006 I agree about the blown out area being fine in these circumstances, like an artist leaving a blank bit of canvas when that is the right colour. The extremes of tonal range suit the shot. You have caught the drama of the sculpture well and the light is very atmospheric. That bio-pic of yours is getting more and more interesting each time I see it! Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted January 19, 2006 Like the others, I think the blown highlights contribute rather than detract, and also that the gull needs to go But the rest is terrific, and I particularly like the palette. I've never seen this sculpture before, so find the shape intriguingly new - not only did I think "Viking longboat" when I saw it, I also thought it could be the rib cage skeleton of a whale or something... wonderful visual in such a stark place. Nicely done! Link to comment
