  1. Never had a problem. I understand that is DOES happen sometimes, but not often. Street is one of the more ubiquitous and prevalent forms of the photography hobby. Do you really have That Much trouble with people.....so much so that you need to quit.? Do not think i have ever heard this before :(
  2. One of the Speed Graphic cameras. Maybe not 4x5, but one of the smaller MF bodies. All those, older, Hollywood movies i saw as a kid.....all of the Real Photographers used a Graflex of one kind or another. :)
  3. I definitely share your appreciation for the XD. I had considered buying the X-700 a few years ago, but after i borrowed a friends X-570, found i liked that better. I owned three Canon A-1 bodies, and i shot them A LOT, but had i known more about Minolta in the late 70's and early 80's, i never would have bothered with any of the Canon A-Series cameras.......;)
  4. Certainly plausible. I suppose we will never know how "covert" the choosing of the title was. On the other hand.......I have Seen/Read ALL Kinds of books with titles like - The History of Spain The History of The usa The Muscle Cars The Great Moments in Sports The Railroads of North America I never once thought that (this) One Book was The Definitive word on any of the subjects. Again, why does Frank's book get (some) people so wound up.? What should it have been called.? .....(Some Of) The Americans ALL the above books leave out all kinds of people, cars, trains, events. It's just one book. Nobody is trying to bamboozle anybody else. We all know that Frank's book does not have pictures of EVERY type of "American". ;)
  5. Sorry you made that assumption. My comment was simply in jest, and not made with any definition......hence the smiley face. For The Record.....I have seen cars jacked up and wheels stolen in California as well. So that photo IS representative of at least the criminal ability of two states. I hope i did not offend the pride of any thieves outside the Tennessee boundaries. No doubt the criminals of my area are just as clever, and have a similar "machismo". :) Nice try on the conflation though. Sweet Dreams
  6. Good Heavens...had to do a double take.! At first look, i thought that was a Police Car. Anybody else see that.? We have thieves of course, but the thieves in Tennessee, they have some REAL Machismo. :)
  7. Oh Man.....I LOVE train photos, and have several books to prove it.! That is a nice frame. If you want to post (a lot) more, i wont complain. :) I am just 10 miles, down Hwy-12 from..... Historic Train Exhibits Vintage Streetcar - Western Railway Museum and just 50 miles down Hwy-80 from..... California State Railroad Museum
  8. Nice Frames... :) Those jewelry makes have incredible patience. I went to the Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco...several years in a row. We used to sit on the roof of a building at Sutter and Trinity and watch them come up Montgomery Street. Miss China Town always got HUGE Applause from our roof-top. :)
  9. I hate being behind those people, (which must account for 50% these days) at stop lights. Some of the bigger intersections take a while to cycle through, especially the Left Turn lights. I have had about enough.....the light (finally) turns green, but The Phone Zombies don't notice. Well, they DO Notice, but just quick enough for THEM to make it. They do not seem to care that the rest of the world is behind them, and our phones are at home.
  10. Funny, after all these years, there is still a certain percentage that have problems with Franks book. Now even the title draws scorn What should he have called it.....The Germans, The French, The Islanders.? Some guy with a Guggenheim, walked around with a camera, and took pictures of the era. If somebody published his book of photographs, and called it "The New Yorkers".....would ANYBODY think the book, somehow, was purporting to be THE WORD on what New York Citizens do or look like.?.......Of course not.! Franks book gets the same bizarre complaint, year after year after year.:) One of my teacher's MFA was built around "The Americans". She had corresponded with Writers/Photographers that worked for Pop Photo at the time of the books release. It was typical HUAC stuff of the day. They did not like the color of the truth, and Frank took a lot of flak for it. They told her The French text was never considered for the reprinting of The Americans. Apparently, even the likes of Rosset/Grove....rather progressive publishers... thought it would offend THE Americans sense Nationalism. What a humorous twist of irony that was.;) Like frequently happens, The Controversy and Detracting breeds interest and book sales No such thing as bad publicity...as the saying goes. :)
  11. That is "exactly" the point he was making in that interview i read. And he was well aware of the regressive ideology that his book was used to prop up. As if he had somehow convinced the photos to lie about one thing or another. Like that Swiss interview pointed out, a "famous" piece of art can really pigeon-hole a photographer. It is very similar to what happens to an actor that is part of a Hugely Successful television show. The actor wants to move on but the world , forever, sees the actor as Captain Kirk, or Ginger or Mary Ann. Once again, the double-edged sword of fame.
  12. It remains a well selling book of photographs. It gets discussed in in all beginner and art appreciation classes. Kind of a Photography Icon at this stage of the game. The only legitimate complaint about Frank's book is the lousy quality of the reprinting. :) The power of the book has been somewhat Enigmatic over the years, even causing debate about the path of travel of "Native" peoples it would seem. Frank never put any limitations on the photographs. A person can have them as many ways as they like. It is amazing, Frank eluded to the fact in a mid 1970's German/Swiss Interview. Forty years after that, Circa 2015 and a certain minority is still lodging the same diatribe about a few measly photographs. :) The nerve that Mr Frank touched with that book is (still) very telling. No wonder he got a Guggenheim for it. That would be an honor for any photographer. If the translation i read was accurate, the woman that interviewed him called The Americans, The Americants......I believe the reference she was making was current affairs of the state with Nixon and Vietnam at that time. Mr Frank was Gobsmacked by the many furrows of society that made claims to the "Intent" of the pictures he had taken. I suppose it happens with any famous piece of art, whether it be a book of photographs, a hit record, or a movie. The "artist" moves on, but the art cements them to a certain time in history. Price of fame and all that i sup[pose.;) .
  13. BTW.....the titile is Not....."THE Americans".....it is "The Americans". I own the book, he photographed all kinds of different people. Did you want him to shoot everybody in the country.? Also...Immigrants have Always been a problem.....just ask "THE Indians" :) There is nothing in the book that remotely approaches anything resembling a lie. Once again, Robert Frank seems to have the Non-Natives doing a war dance.;)
  14. The T-90 was a very good camera in its day. You CAN still find one in working order, but with so may other choices, my onion is to avoid it. Kind of hard to go wrong with an FTb.....wonderful cameras. I have probably shot the A-1 more than any other camera in the last 40 years. They are not my "favorite" body, but they are nice, and well built. They meter a bit "weird" in manual mode, but like anything else, you get used to it. I think they are a bit Under-appreciated. At this point, the Only A-Series bodies i kept is the Canon AT-1.....i have a pair. Another under-appreciated Canon...IHMO. If you like shooting manual, and do not mind a batter dependent body, you should take a peek. I am sort of a Nikon guy, but push coming to shove.?.........i think i would take my Canon New F-1 over any of my Nikon F-2 variants. I LOVE the way the New F-1 meters in manual mode. It is a well made camera with no bad habbits. Then again.......ALL the cameras you are considering will take excellent photos. :) Good Luck with whatever you choose.
  15. Yep, he went out, shot some very good frames, and for some reason, they still upset a small minority of people. I guess that addresses the excellent quality of his photos. :) We all have a unique eye. There will always be people that do not like a group of photos for one reason or another. I am dumbfounded at why Bill Cunningham was so popular. He was a super nice guy, and VERY Dedicated to his photography, but his photos were largely lousy IMHO. Just because he shot CERTAIN frames and not others, dose not speak poorly of Bill, or make him some kind of manipulator. Just like Frank, he shot what he shot. There is NOTHING dishonest about Robert Frank or Bill Cunningham. Somebody like Robert Frank, regardless of what imaginary lines on a map he crossed, are just a mirror of the times they point a lens at and snap the shutter. I guess Street Photography has always been misunderstood and upsetting. Why people would try to pin that on the photographers worthiness is quite strange.:(
  16. I think 60 Dollars is very reasonable for (used) digital timer...You want new.? You must have a price in mind, you must have looked at new prices.....?
  17. I assume you want color.? Kodak Color Plus 200. otherwise..... Ilford HP5 The AE-1 is an electronic camera. Batteries/Electronics can have a difficult time with "cold" weather. Make sure you bring extra batteries and try to keep the camera "warm". Good Luck
  18. This is basically the answer to an age old problem. NEW reels load like magic, but once they age....... As said above, the biggest issue is that the plastic reels load from the outside in. You are "Shoving" the film into the reel. Any little obstruction can cause a problem. Metal reels start at the center and then you PULL the film on.....no problems with jamming. That is why everybody has the same trouble...usually with 36 Exp...and usually after about 22-30 frames are loaded. At That Point, you are trying to push so much film in, that the smallest catch creates a problem. Try "rounding" the corners of the leading film edge. Some guys rub the reels with a pencil to lubricate them. Try running a dummy 36 Exp through, at first, to help with any potential problem areas, before you load the "real" film. Try rinsing the reels in Distilled water when you finish. Photo-Flo.....yeah, some guys swear that is problematic and always remove the film from the plastic reels before they use any of that stuff. Two techniques i have had "success" with if i get about 70% of the film in and then it binds......... 1. Just try knocking the reels on a table-top, see if that will clear the problem. 2. Keep going bu use a VERY Short stroke if you know what i mean.? Do not rotate the reels to their max. Just wind it back about 1/2" and see if you can just slowly, with those short strokes, get the rest of the film loaded. And if all else fails, just pull the film off the reels and start all over....... Good Luck
  19. It seems that, maybe, you have never done this before.? Part of your troubles might just be simple procedure. There are LOTS of good videos on Youtube that show a "beginner" how to get started with Enlarger and Lens settings, Test Strips and Chemicals. Have you watched any of those.? You might find it very helpful. Good Luck :)
  20. I think what he is saying is........"film" is not causing this problem. The person HAS a digital camera, they can shoot the same scene and compare the Shutter speed, f/stop and ASA. It might help the guy understand what he has been doing wrong There MIGHT be a problem with the camera, but i think most of us suspect different at this point.
  21. The "worth" is whatever value you attach to having a camera that functions properly. I have several 35mm SLR bodies. MOST of them (used) cost less than the CLA/Repair price. Think of all the guys walking around with SLR's that do not work properly. :)
  22. In usa "English".......Knee - Cone Accent on the first syllable of "Knee", quickly followed by a softer "Cone"
  23. Good for you.! I am way late with my "advice", but here it is all the same. You will simply have to try a paper(s) I have used A LOT of Ultrafine Silver Eagle Fiber Base VariGrade DW Glossy Photo Paper - Ultrafine Silver Eagle Fiber Base Varigrade Black-and-White Photo Paper But also just as much of the Ilford Fiber VC Gloss. The Ultrafine frequently goes on sale for Very Cheap. But that is where we part company.....not that it will make a Huge Difference. I typically shoot 35mm HP-5 Develop in Rodinal or Ilfotec HC For paper it is Ilford Multi Grade, water + citric acid, and Ilford Rapid Fix. I WAS using Photo Form Liquidol. It was great stuff, but i THINK i switched to Ilford because of the 5 Liter pricing. Anyway......welcome back to Traditional Photography :)
  24. Those are awesome photos.! It is a crying shame the usa gave up May Day with the "rest" of the world.
  25. Did you ever get this fixed, or is there a decent tech within 500 km of you.? I have the XD-11. The ONLY reason i do not shoot it more is because i have so Many 35mm bodies. But they are an awesome camera. They must have about the Smoothest/Quietest shutter of any Manual SLR of the period. :)
