Using a ND filter and a circular polarizer will dramatically improve this image. The light on the mountain is spectacular. and the greens and the lake is beautifully exposed.

That is a good question. I used a soft ND filter and set the line just above the horizon. This allowed me to darken the sky and also darken the rock formation that was lit up brightly by the setting sun. Then I waited until minimal amount of light was falling on the rest of the scene before taking the photograph.

Alternatively, you can use HDR techniques for taking images like these.

Potrait of Aanna at Cannon Beach taken on her recent visit to

Oregon. The photograph is composed to give a sense of place, show of

specatacular cloud formations and be able to capture beautiful

    Aanna's beautiful smile.

  1. Very artisitic, minimalist photograph. I think it looks good just the way it is. The colors are just right and the moon is placed off center creating an focal point for the viewer. Well done.

I love the pose...it is sensual, suggestive with great lighting. I would remove all distractions from this one and leave her alone.
  2. The hike to Havasu falls is 10 miles each way (to campground) with approximately 2000 feet elevation change. You loose altitude on the way in and gain it on the way out. We backpacked..my backpack was about 40-45 lbs. It took me 3.2 hours to get to campground and 4.2 hours to get back (uphill) including breaks along the way. It was snowing/hailing when we left the car and rained on and off all weekend long. The morning when I took the photos, the mountains surrounding the canyons were covered with snow. The average temprature in day time was in 50s and night time in 30s. I fell in the river couple of times while crossing it and got cold and wet (and there were no fire allowed). And given another chance...I would do this over again in even worse conditions. :-)))
  3. In digital world, I can look at the histogram and know how a shot is going to come out. So, if I dont need to combine mulitple exposure together, I only need to take one shot...and no need to bracket.
