what would you class as an alternative digital camera ?

I have shot Ilford 400 HP for a long while and developed my own and have been very happy. However due to a change in circumstances, I have recently shot Ilford 400 XP2 and Kodak B&W professional C-41, and got them developed and scanned at the lab. The first three rolls I have shot I have found to more Grey and White rather than Black and white, it this due to inherent nature of the C-41 B&W process or an issue with the scan ?

can rollei 400 B&W be devloped through c-41 chemistry ?

I have been considering purchasing a medium format camera, for some time. I don’t seem to get the results that I am looking for in digital or 35mm, they are missing that pop factor that many of the photographers I admire have. I have always been put off by the fact that as I don’t print over A4 that often and as often display my images on the web, that there was little point in going for medium format, as that was the main advantage as I saw it.
However having become increasingly frustrated with not getting the results I want with my photography, I examined the photographers I admire and saw that they all use Medium format. Even when their images were displayed on the web, they still seemed to have that look. Is there something intrinsic in the look of medium format or does it simply offer greater resolution ?

I know this is a photography forum rather than a video forum, but I thought I would give video recording on my SLR a go. When I first starting recording on my Canon 500d it would record for a few minutes then stop. However over the last couple of months I have never been able to record for more than a few seconding without it stopping, up to 10 seconds tops. Can anyone explain why this is ?

I am compiling a list of famous Art Photographers who shoot deliberately shoot single images, rather than a series of images. These are the ones I have come up with so far:
Jeff Wall,
Thomas Demand,
Gursky
Can you think of anymore to add to the list ?

I understand that magazines are under the squeeze from new media, and everyone has a digital camera now, but I really enjoy reading good quality investigative photojournalism, there seem to be so little of it now in magazines, are people really no longer interested in reading it? Am I in a minority ?

Hi I am preparing a photographic book. Alongside my images I need some screen shots from two websites. (I have permission to do this but do not access to the source code or jpegs). What is the best way to get the highest resolution screenshot, is their a way to get higher quality images other than Print Screen ?

the card register doesn't at all. I did have this problem before actually last winter, and it started up again when it has been cold.

I seem to have a problem with my Canon 500d where it won’t recognise any SD cards. I then have to blow in the SD card slot and after a couple attempts it works fine again. However I am finding this rather annoying as in that time I can often miss vital shots. Is there any way I can stop this without causing damage. Or maybe it’s the SD cards that have the problem from dust rather than the slot, is there any way to clean this safety?

This forum seems rather dead, which is a shame as I do most of my shooting with modern compacts.
I have three:
Yashica T4,
Rollei Giro 70,
Olmpus Mju 2
I am looking for a Modern compact (ie autofocus and autoload) with zoom and manual controls (Ap priority) ? Does one even exist? I know that if it does the lens will be slow...but that would be a price i willing to pay.

Does anyone have any suggestions for where i can buy plastic negative wallets ? 7 Day shop no longer list them and I haven't seen any for sale in UK on ebay for ages.

Hello I am looking at using social media to raise my profile, so far i have been lucky and haven’t had to search for clients, but I don’t want to rest on my laurels. I have read several articles on the web about social media but I can’t understand why photographers would use Twitter over a blog for social media. With a blog it can be searched by people not on twitter via Google. What are the advantages of Twitter over a blog? I am only going to create one or the other because I only have time at the moment to update one.

But it's not just for competions I here this. In this thread for example it is suggested that shooting RAW is the answer to the guy's problem getting large prints

http://www.flickr.com/groups/mamiya7/discuss/72157624843748151/

I understand that RAW gives a lot more flexibility to recover highlights and shadows, exposure and white balance. But I have read that RAW will give me higher quality larger prints, in fact when I enter competitions some specify that you must have the RAW format to the file, in case you win as they will want to make large prints.
How will RAW give me better quality large prints? To achieve this how would you then process the RAW file into a JPEG to achieve this, is this via interpoloation or sharpening or any other method ? Or if I just export straight to JPEG will this automatically give me a better quality JPEG to print from.

What is the difference is image degradation between a digital and an analogue Black and white C-type print. It is possible to get a digital print to last as long as an analogue one? Is so what process do you recommend. What is good practice for making a print last as long as possible?

I would look at this article. It talks about the history of the photobook (and hence series of images):

“Eventually, photography succeeded in becoming autonomous: photographers moved beyond supplying artists with motifs or documentation, and exhibited their work independently and made photo-books. In the latter case, in France in particular, there were pragmatic reasons – copyright depended on publication in books.”

Reading recently about Vivian Maiers, absolutely love her work. It got me thinking I know a lot of artists have been “discovered” after their death, but have there been instances of other photographers or is Vivian Maiers unique in regards to this ?
