  1. the intimacy of this portrait is really very appealing as is the way you set her off against the background. The downcast look while still putting emphasis on her eyes does the trick. What I don't like though is the variety (and the saturation) of skin colours in her face. I wonder if you considered doing this in b&w?

I came back to this because at the time I had very little time to answer all your comments.

Axel, yes. There was some luck involved but maybe less than you might think because these guys were shooting continously

Jeff, your comment is spot-on. This was a big event, a national photographic fair and I was there at the invitation of a friend. It was my first time ever there and rest assured, my last time as well. Photographic workshops that were almost all way below par. Hormone induced overly horny guys who got off on shooting some rented models, most probably too shy to do it any other way. Embarassing wouldn't begin to describe it.

Juan, I was very very close (I'm not that shy) and used a short zoom. I did fashion shows for a year or two so I know how to elbow my way in.The only reason I had my camera with me however was because I wanted to make use of the occassion and do some streetwork as well. Besides, I don't see any use in shooting exactly the same alongside dozens of others unless I get paid to do it. Anyway, I'd prefer to go to a rodeo with you any day of the week. And in case you where wondering I'm very much a thigh and legs man ;-)))

Thanks Chris. It seems you've got taste ;-)

I'm not sure about that Bulent. And yes, men indeed. Horny bastards.

    Thanks Meir

    Amy, thanks. I appreciate it.

    Thank you Drew, a lot.

Thanks Andrea. I often look the other way ;-)))

thanks. Actually I only made the slightest alterations here. The colors are quite real. Anyone who has ever been to London is familiar with the running light adverts on Piccadilly and combined with regular heavy rainshowers it made for an irresistable combination.

you should come to our country sometime ;-)

That sign is one thing but the car and the guy in it is what really tops this one off and makes it work for me. Cliches, if presented the right way, can be very powerfull and there's a lot of power here. It's like lifting the banal to the highest level. Both thumbs up.

I like this close-up attitude portrait very much, especially with that low angle. What puts me a bit off though is the overall greyness that doesn't fit in with the overall lighting. I think that an increase in contrast would do a world of good here.

I think you did a great job and from where I'm sitting you've turned a fairly ordinary photo into a very good and striking one. However, far more important than what I think is what you think yourself.
  2. frankly this one blows me away. It's such a complete photo both from a compositional as from a technical point of view that I have a lot of joy watching this. For my money this one is your best to date Mr. B and impressively so.

frankly I'm not so sure about that myself Jeff. Although it looks good in color it's hardly a photo that leaves a deep impression while I suspect it would look more dramatic in b&w. In fact I'm sure of it. Given your comment I tried and while it may not be what you are after I think it looks far more striking in b&w.
  3. `But I guess I was wrong in that line of thought`

that is not the point. It isn´t about right or wrong but about making choices and following a train of thought. For that you have to keep questioning yourself and your motivations. It´s what I do.

  4. I think the story, such as it is, is there and you did good to shoot this. However, including elements in a photo can add or distract and I for one ask myself that question. In that sense I personally see those dustbins not adding a lot to this photo, especially looking at the size and placement of the old woman in your photo. Apart from that your b&w conversion needs some work as well. In using a few adjustment layers and adding some contrast I provide you with an alternative.
