3.
The wind crank is probably missing because it had to be removed to use the speed grip. The ETRS was my go-to med-format & wedding camera for years. I still own three. IMO the speed grip is not optional but requires an eye-level prism (meter or not). I never liked the metered prism but that's just personal preference.
Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  5.

a Hoya ND polariser (normal size) and Hoya variable neutral density

By "Hoya ND polariser" do you mean a Hoya polarizing filter or a Hoya neutral density filter? They're not the same at all. And, you should know that a variable neutral density filter is constructed of two polarizer filters. Stacking a polarizer and a variable ND filter does not sound like a recipe for success.
Finally, every filter introduces two air-to-glass surfaces and each surface is a breeding ground for image-destroying flare, a problem not easily repaired after the image is made in camera.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  7.
Multiple capacitors each firing the flash tube in turn and then recharging while the next, fully charged capacitor in the queue takes its turn firing would do, but it'd be complicated IMO, and the tube would overheat.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  8.
We appreciate your concern and your loyalty, and want to take this time to help you understand what has been happening recently. At B&H we value each and every customer; your concern is our concern. We know you have choices when shopping and your choice of our establishment is something we do not and must not take lightly. We want to continue earning your business and instilling pride in your choice for photo and electronics.

B&H is a family owned business, a success that has been built for over 40 years from a small storefront in New York City to the worldwide enterprise we are today. This is credit to our dedicated and devoted employees, many of whom have been with our company for decades.

Every one of our employees is treated with respect and dignity, no matter of race, religion or gender. The average employee tenure at B&H far exceeds most of our competitors and as well as most employers of any kind. Our employees are well compensated, offered generous benefits, and they are given 17 paid days off in addition to 3 weeks paid vacation. Few companies offer this.

The allegations you have been hearing about are largely made by people who have never set foot in a B&H facility. For the time being, we will address several of the accusations, as they are far from factual. We can declare outright that B&H does NOT have any segregated bathrooms by race or religion, and anyone working at B&H knows that to be true. Additionally, any similar contentions are not only inaccurate, but bizarre.

There are always areas where we can better ourselves, and these are issues that B&H is committed to strengthening as we move forward. Our goal is to create an even friendlier environment for our employees, where there can be no doubt that their needs, concerns, and well being are noticeably our primary focus. Our roots are from a place where discrimination affected so many of the very people who are now part of the B&H family, and we built this company and brand to defy what were the norms around us, and to give everyone the chance to succeed, to care for their families and homes, and to be happy. That will not change, but will only be improved upon.

What you may not be told in these scurrilous narratives is that B&H chose to keep its jobs in New York, rather than opting, as many others do, to outsource jobs to areas overseas where labor rates are lower. Our call centers and online management teams are right here. We chose a very different route, and we continue to make daily decisions taking into account first and foremost our dedicated employees and customers and we will continue to do so.

Over the next few weeks and months, you will hear more and see the growth, and we will make sure our customer and our employee are kept keenly aware of the situation. Please feel free to reach to us with any of your concerns and we hope we can continue to earn your business in the future.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

    Focus screen

Is the Beattie without doubt that much better?

All my Nikon FM2n bodies have original Nikon screens but I have three Bronica ETRS bodies and one of them has a Beattie or Intenscreen aftermarket screen. I cannot now recall which but I do know I don't see any appreciable difference from one to another. YMMV

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  12.
Email from Brad Berger, President, Berger Bros. Camera:

I have decided to add a Berger Bros retail camera store to our School, Center for Photographic Art in Huntington Village. I feel Huntington Village is a happening & growing area and we have many customers asking us to open a camera store here. We will continue to have classes, a photo gallery and studio rental at the Huntington location.
On a sad note, I have decided that after 65 years on or before March 24th, 2016 we will close our original Amityville location started by my dad and his two brothers in 1951. This is not an easy thing for me to do. I have pretty much spent most of my life getting to know most of the hundreds of thousands of customers at this location. There are many factors involved in this very difficult decision but overall I feel it is the right direction to transition our customers to our New Huntington Village and Syosset stores. Syosset will become our main store.
I can assure you that it will be worth your trip and you will still get the same great service and product selection at Huntington & Syosset stores from your favorite Berger Bros sales associate. To our loyal South Shore customers, if you find it difficult to get to our locations please call me on my cell 516-816-4921 and I will personally help you and ship free or deliver what you need.

Thank you for your loyalty,

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  14.
I have not seen a copy of the email Mark receive but here's what I know. We do not have this lens and it looks like we won't see this lens until (maybe) April, and then in very limited quantities.

The reason we were able to offer the lens for 99.99 was that Panasonic said they'd reimburse us for the difference between that price and the regular 247.99 price. This is the same way an "instant rebate" works -- the US distributor refunds (usually) 80% of the price difference to the retailer. Without the refund from the distributor retailers cannot afford the below-cost prices.

Panasonic has withdrawn their promise to honor this reimbursement. If we cannot convince them to change their minds (and I do not believe we can) we will not be able to sell a lens for 99.99 when we're paying more than 200.00 for it. Basically by withdrawing their agreement to us we're left in a bind and so are our customers.

Kenneth said, "...they should have stopped offering it at $99 if they could not fulfill the order." In fact when we learned of Panasonic's decision we did stop. I wish we'd know much earlier but we did not. When we knew, we acted. The 25/1.7 has been removed from our web site entirely. As of now, it is not available at B&H.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  16.

In our dreadfully lit home HS gym...

Over the course of 20 years I have shot several thousand high school and college basketball games. 90+% of the time I used on-camera flash, always after checking with both coaches and the refs. None every had any objection and most times the players told me they were unaware my flash was firing.
If there's room a seat on the floor at the end of the court with the key to your left is a good vantage point. I prefer a slightly wide angle lens there and almost never try to shoot anything past half court but (since most players are right-handed) you often get them driving towards the basket facing you.
In most high school gyms the light is terrible. Even when the quantity is adequate, the quality is awful. Flash helps freeze motion, control color cast from mercury vapor lamps, balance contrast, fill in shadows from gym lighting that is only directly overhead, aid contrast and add specularity. YMMV

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  17.

the D5/D500 launch is held at only two stores in the entire New York state, namely Adorama and B&H, both in Manhattan, none in upstate New York.

B&H has two scheduled on Feb 8th -- 1-3pm and 4-6pm. I believe the Event Space seats about 50 per event.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  18.
The adapter with glass is an optical adapter which is actually at the same time also a short teleconverter. It increases the focal length by a factor of 1.25x, and reduces the lens aperture by approx. one f/stop. This adapter allows for focusing at infinity.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  23.
Once upon a time most slr viewfinders showed 92% of the image precisely because most people shot slides and the finder image was designed to be the same as a mounted slide. I don't recall when camera manufacturers first started bragging about 100% viewfinders but for those of us who remember slides and shot them regularly your experience is nothing new.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  24.
The Bronica ETRS was my primary med format camera for a decade or more. Plenty of weddings, portraits, and other stuff.
Two comments
-- while the waist-level finder is handy I found the non-meter prism in combination with the speed grip made the camera MUCH simpler and more comfortable to operate. I have a meter prism too but it's bigger and heavier and IMO not really useful, especially since I used an incident meter religiously.
-- Regarding lenses -- my outfit consisted of the 50, 75 & 150 lenses. Never had any others and never really felt I needed any others. YMMV

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video
