1.
On my 283, with ISO 400 the yellow setting is f/5.6. That's good for the foreground. The background is lit by the ambient light, not the flash and will go very dark if you are using a relatively fast shutter speed. With most contemporary cameras the fastest shutter speed, the x-sync speed, limits you to (usually) 1/250 sec, but on the other end, nothing prevents you from shooting at 1/15th sec or 1/8th sec and adding plenty of ambient light to the image.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  6.
I've used the Manfrotto rail system for lights. It's expensive, requires some competence to install and IMO is not suitable for a camera. YMMV. I agree with the others who suggest you consider a camera stand.

Henry Posner
B&H photo-Video

  12.

Henry has a first name too. What's that about?

In order to receive permission and a user license for my first name, which is protected by the US copyright and trademark laws and the Berne convention, you must submit your request in triplicate with notarized evidence of a recent colonoscopy to the department of surname security. As with all similar government agencies your first request will be rejected, unread, after languishing for months. Your second request will likely receive a similar fate, but the possibility it will be read before rejection rises to 5%.
- henry
Mr. Pink: Hey, why am I Mr. Pink?
Joe: Because you're a faggot.
Mr. Pink: Why can't we pick our own colors?
Joe: No way, no way. 13.

Tamron 18-200 Zoom lens Don't get me wrong the lens isn't bad per se, but it's not really sharp or fast enough for portraiture

Just to take the contrarian point of view, I did portraiture for decades. 90% of the time in a studio using a sturdy tripod and multiple strobes. The lens' max aperture was of almost no consequence at all, and a little lens softness, or the judicious use of soft focus filters, decreased retouching costs and made the mother of the bride look 10 years younger, which in turn made me out to be a hero. Just sayin'

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  14.
I just traded a mint condition Apple iPhone 4s and original version iPad Mini, both in mint-condition boxes at my local Apple store. The person who took the trade-ins didn't care one whit about the boxes. All he wanted to know was if they worked and if the screens were undamaged.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  15.
They say, "Having a square back will be nice as you don't need to rotate it, and quite a few people like the square format. A cropping option will allow you to crop to 4x5 or 5x4." Makes sense to me. The venerable Mamiya RB67 is actually a 7x7 camera that takes a 6x7 back you can use vertically or horizontally by rotating the back, not the camera. Ideal for tripod work IMO.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  18.
The 550D is the EOS Rebel T2i in the USA. Canon has three 18-135 options for you:
Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens MFR # 3558B002
Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens MFR # 6097B002
Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens MFR # 1276C002
STM = STM designation (Stepping Motor) gives smooth and quiet auto-focus that is ideal for shooting video with the Movie Servo AF feature. If you're not going to be shooting video primarily it's not necessary and offhand I'm not sure your T2i has the Movie Servo AF feature.
For the other two the pries are approx US $ 500.00 and 600.00. I'm partial to USM, but if the purchase price is an issue IMO it's not necessarily a deal-breaker.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  19.

it may be very well that I forgot... will that cause this issue then?

Indeed. If you don't engage the rewind function you're trying to go in reverse while the transmission is still in drive.
Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

    The Nikon F

Looks like Tim has the newest body version, the "Apollo," with the plastic tip on the winding lever. He also has the latest FTn Photomic finder. I think JDM's body is older and he's showing the older Tn Photomic head too. He's also got the AR-1 soft shutter release.

More here.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video

  23.
The Nikon motor drive for the FM2n is the Nikon MD12, capable of 3.5 fps. I use them with all my FM2n bodies, my mainstay 35mm camera for the last decade I shot professionally. I shot all sorts of news ans sports stuff with this combo for years using only non-zoom lenses.

The secret to capturing any action is the same with this system as with any other -- know the event, prefocus where the peak action will be, precompose, and then learn to anticipate that peak of action. In pole-vaulting, for instance, prefocusing on the bar is simple. Same for hurdles. For other sprints start by capturing the finish, where you can prefocus on the finish line.

Henry Posner
B&H Photo-Video
