  1. Creating stories in an on-site writing contest at Santa Barbara Writers Conference, Santa Barbara, California, USA, June 2008.
  2. At San Francisco MOMA July 2012, admiring La Chemise Moire, by Kees van Dongen in the sincerest way, by photographing it.
  3. Inverse filtering circuit for extracting vocal cord waveforms from vowels. Built at UCLA in the early 1980s from schematic by and advice from Gunnar Fant.
  4. If it helps, Karim, Edwin Land also encountered skeptics when he was working to bring about the Polaroid process. I know he approached the father of a friend of mine, a Wall Street investor, about providing money for R&D. My friend's father, to his later regret, decided the idea was too far-fetched. I'm sure he was not the only one. Also, you can't put this into the public domain because (1) you're not the first (original) inventor and (2) the patents have expired, so it is already in the public domain.
  5. At the 2012 Santa Barbara Writers Conference: Authors Stephen Vessels, hands in pockets, center, with Jack Eidt and Robin Burrows.
  6. My knees after 2016 total replacement of left knee. Left-right reversed on monitor. Bright area on X-ray is titanium.
  7. Maybe I can be of assistance. I'm an amateur photographer, but my education and work have nearly all been in linguistics. I am not a lexicographer (the linguists who do dictionaries) but still, the answer is what SamStevens quoted that Wittgenstein said: The meaning of a word is its use in a language. If language users should happen to decide that images created by scanning are called "Philadelphia cheesesteaks" then that would be the right term, and it would eventually get into dictionaries.
  8. I wonder how many paid memberships were lost the way mine was. I was paying, to support PN, even though none of the benefits were important to me. Then some members reported that their paid memberships were being renewed for another year without their request or authorization. I took out the relatively few photos in my gallery and switched to a non-paying subscription. After a time, I started to participate in "No Words" and know I should pay for it. If the procedures are straightened out, I'd be happy to go back. Like some who wrote above, I felt the upgrade of some years back was a disaster, with loss of function and not a few members.
  9. Although my own preferences in Nikon F wides are at focal lengths of 20 and 28mm (both f/1.8) the 24mm f/1.8 is a lovely modern lens at a good price.
