  1. Thank you Pascal. I'm glad you like it. Setting up a tripod for this image was hard, but looking through the viewfinder and framing the image afterward was almost more than my back could take. The footing was very uneven and I thought I was going to turn into a pretzel. I'm happy with the results though, so it was worth the effort.

Thank you Pascal. This is a fairly famous spot. I made plans to photograph Mt. Ranier from there about six weeks in advance. The weather didn't cooperate though and it took a couple of weekend trys before I was got this shot. Which was fortunate as it was my last opportunity.
  2. Once you bust 50, age is always an issue you have to confront in the job market. Thats reality and there isn't anything you can do to change it. All you can do is deal with it as best you can, and try to keep retooling and retraining yourself.

I am still flirting with the idea of trying to make money via photography after I retire. But I already know I don't know know how to start and run a business the proper way. My wife and I ran a gift shop for four years that was a money losing proposition. And I once attempted to open an electronic medical billing business. Talk about a total flop! Before I go that route a third time, I want to know how to do it the right way. Hopefully schooling will provide that.

  3. Not long ago someone contacted me and asked me to send them a resume. They had a need for someone with very specific skill sets and they thought I was just the person to fit the bill. They were right. I have over three decades experience doing precisely what they needed. But when after I forwarded them my resume they responded by saying after careful review they thought I was over qualified for the position.

I am convinced that when an employer tells someone they are over qualified for a position they usually mean "too old." Age discrimination is illegal so no prospective employer is going to admit to it. They would be fools if they did. But in practice it happens all the time.

The truth is most employers DO discriminate on the basis of age no matter what they say. At least thats what my job search taught me. I'll put it this way, every career counselor I have spoken with has advised me to try and minimize age on my resume as much as possible.

  4. Hi Kim.

I check photo.net frequently but I haven't uploaded any new work in several months. I was spending all my spare time looking for gainful employment. But the search wasn't going well, so I decided to do something radical and go back to school.

I have been admitted to Colorado State University in Fort Collins for the fall of 2007. But they are allowing me to start early with summer classes starting in May. My goal is to get a degree in business administration.

I am currently taking 13 credits at the local Junior College just to get back into the habit of studying. The CSU advisor suggested I do that and I am finding out it was good advice.

I will be graduating in June 2009 and will be 61 years old a month later. I am not sure how practical that is. But I do know its given me a sense of purpose and direction for which I am grateful. For awhile I felt like I was just drifting aimlessly and I hated it.

Thats all the news thats fit to print. Anyway I am thankful for your concern. And I do mean that. :)

Thank you Kim. I like this better than anything I have taken in some time. (Not that I have been that productive of late.) I was originally going to do this in color but when push came to shove I thought it had more of an impact in black and white.

I have done more color than I have black and white over the years. I am making a conscious effort to balance things out these days. In addition I have always thought it required more of the photographer and a better quality image to be sucessful in black and white. You can mask a lot of flaws with color.

  5. Thank you Kim. Sorry to be so long answering this but I have been in Arizona for the last six days and didn't have access to a computer down there.

The one time I managed to get up to RMNP during the rut this year was the day I took this photo. My traveling days are now over so hopefully I can get back to photographing this guy and his brothers. :)

  6. Stephen you should have stayed in Fort Collins. I believe it was recently rated as one of the best cities in the country in which to live. I am ready to believe that. But then I admit to being biased as I live in Loveland just 9 miles to the south of it.

Thanks for taking time to comment.

The first thing that comes to mind is that it is not sharply focused. I don't know if that is by design or by accident. Either way it is visually troublesome.

The second thing is the composition with the tree dead center. Thats not normally the best choice as it tends to result in a rather static look. In the future you might want to consider using the rule of thirds. A google search will return many hits that explain that concept much better than I can.

Thank you Kathy. I agree with your analysis. When I was first editing this I experimented with cropping out the dark area at the top. It just didn't quite work for me that way.
