I have an Elmar about 1931 (I think) which fully seats in a Zorki e body and an Industry 50 which stops about 1/2 turn from fully seating in the same body. The threads look OK to the naked eye. Can anyone explain? I have read on line that the Industar 50 is Tessar glass in a Leica mount. Any comments? Thanks

It seems to me that an extinction meter must depend on the eyesight of the user. (BTW, I don't think a meter with a selenium cell would be an extinction meter.)

Determining date of old Leitz Elmar lens
charles_stobbs3 replied to charles_stobbs3's topic in Leica and Rangefinders
Thanks (again) Richard. (Ithought I replied yesterday but I guess it went adrift.) The number was right where your photo showed it. My lens is a 1931 Elmar. I bought it from Olddn Camera & Lens in NYC in the late 1950"s. It would be interesting to know where t spent the 30's and 40's. And thanks to all who replied. -
I am trying to date an old Elmar lens using a table of serial numbers vs. manufacture dates but I can't find a serial number on the lens. It is a thread mount, uncoated, focussing scale in meters, probably nickel plated, and an older progression of f stops (3.5, 4.5, 6.3, 9, 12.5, 18). Any info on location of serial number or manufacture date would be appreciated.

Can it really be called photography anymore?
charles_stobbs3 replied to tbarrent's topic in Casual Photo Conversations
I think of photography as a means to remind my self (after a period of time) what I saw or to show someone else what I saw so I try to keep the image as true (?) as possible. -
New darkroom !

If an extractor fan is an exhaust fan, NO,NO,NO. You will be sucking in unfiltered air from the garage . You need an inlet fan that can be fitted with a filter. -

Battery operated lawn mowers are the way to go. Would you drive your car from behind the exhaust pipe? Buy a gasoline powered camera? -
Another Half Frame Thread
charles_stobbs3 replied to Ricochetrider's topic in Classic Manual Film Cameras
My Oly Pen D was the sweetest handling camera I ever owned. The shutter release was flush with the top deck so I could roll my finger off the deck onto the release. The film advances was a knurled wheel sticking out the back. The 4 X 3 ratio of the image was better than the 3 X 2 of a full frame IMHO. I only used Kodachrome slide film with no ability to crop. The camera died just after Kodak stopped supplying half frame slide mounts with their processing so I have less motivation to repair it. but you should try it if you get the chance. -
Kodak Carousel 4600 Questions...
charles_stobbs3 replied to Vincent Peri's topic in Casual Photo Conversations
I have a Kodak Signet slide projector which I used for many years (before going digital). Its uses Arequipt (40 slide) magazines which I find more compact than the carousels. And the sides can't fall out. There was also a single slide holder with a manual ejector and a basket uunderneath for showing small numbers of slides. They came with either a 300 or 400 watt bulb .Mine is a 400 watt with a cooling fan. The cooling fan had a two position switch which allowed you to continue cooling down the bulb after the bulb turned off. There was a choice of two different focal length lenses for small or large rooms. I think the Carousels were designed for commercial retail storefront use because they could be set to continue going round and round for several hours or ll night with no operator needed. -
When did you last project slides?
charles_stobbs3 replied to conrad_hoffman's topic in Casual Photo Conversations
Probably also 80's. My favorite way of viewing slides is with a hand held daylight single slide viewer on the porch with a cold beer (or two) or a mug of hot black coffee. And a just returned box of slides. -

I just finished reading a good book, The Perfectionists ,by Simon Winchester, an author and journalist. He writes about how increasing manufacturing precision has enabled ever better products in modern times. He discusses the two Henrys who made cars, Royce and Ford and how one aimed for the perfect car, using craftsmen and perfectly formed parts, and the other wanted to make a car every one could afford, assembled by relatively unskilled workers, each performing the same simple task over and over on the assembly line.In a section on lenses he starts with the simple magnifying glass he used as a child. When wearing his journalist hat he felt the need to carry a camera so his local camera store owner sold him a Leica M6 with a 35mm Summilux lens and he describes Leica's lens making process. He goes on to discuss telescopes, especially those used to explore distant galaxies. And he compares the relatively small machines used to make early steam pistons and cylinders with 160 ton machines used to manufacture integrated circuits on small silicon chips. A good read, even if you're not quarantined.

What camera(s) are you using this weekend?
charles_stobbs3 replied to Mike Gammill's topic in Classic Manual Film Cameras
Hoping to take a few more shots with my Zorki/Elmar/Provia combination. I forgot how long it takes to use up a 36 exposure roll. Luis, I thought Retina IIa's didn't arrive before 1950 or so. -
In my film era 1/FL never really worked. I was using Kodachrome and I had to use 1/250 to reliably get a sharp projected (20X30) image. And when the Olympus Trip35 camera was introduced it was widely praised for its sharp images which I think was mostly due to its 1/200 fixed shutter speed.

Cell phone influence on taste?
charles_stobbs3 replied to charles_stobbs3's topic in Casual Photo Conversations
What drew my attention was when I looked to see what the cost of an LTM wide angle would be for my Zorki. 50mm looks too confining nowadays. -
Has the cell phone driven up appreciation of wide angle lenses or am I an exception?

I like AJG's advice except for one thing. You should never put an exhaust fan in a dark room, it sucks in air from under the door and through all kinds of cracks and crevices, usually laden with dust. An inlet fan which can easily ben filtered is the way to fo.
