    Georgia Aquarium

Ciao Giuseppe. Grazie per il suo complimenti. You are right about going down further, although the main problem was the 500 other people you would have seen if I had moved it.

Thanks Leslie! You are right about the shark, of course. I couldn't remember and went back and forth. I'll leave my error there for the PN world to see.

The belugas were tough. It was darker and there were a lot more people and not as good a vantage point. I have a couple that are OK but nothing that I felt was special. They were beautiful to watch though.

I liked the aquarium a lot, but I thought it was WAY too entertainment orientated and corporate. There was nothing really too read (although the guides were informative); even the gift shop didn't sell books. But, it's still spectacular.

  1. Thanks for your kind words. Sorry for the lack of image info. I uploaded about 60 pics using the batch mode and I have been adding image info to a couple a day. I really hate it when I see a picture I love and can't tell where it is.

Anyway, this is Pittsburgh the day after the huge blizzard in February. You can see the baseball park on the left and the football stadium is just out of sight on the left. The nice thing about travelling so much is the pleasent surprises. I wasn't looking forward to visiting Pittsburgh at all, but it is a dynamic, interesting fun city and much more beautiful then I imagined.

I'm not completely happy with this picture because of the shadowed forground. I guess one would have to shoot there in the morning to get better light but I was there for work so I had to shoot when I could shoot. I also wish I had shot some RAW here, but it was like -15 and my brain was frozen. Anyway, I did what I could with the shadows.

Thanks again. Good to hear from you.

Taken from a balcony looking over the main tank at the new Georgia

Aquarium in Atlanta. There is some noise in this JPEG but the

original is noise free. Surprisingly, this tank is so huge and lit

that I could shoot at about ISO 600 or so (no tripods allowed and

flash was useless). I waited a LONG time and took a LOT of shots to

get that nurse shark in the right place. And, then, of course, the

people weren't as interesting as they had been previously ...

This image is a bit noisy as no tripods are allowed and I had to

crank up to ISO 1600 to get this (especially since I had to zoom in

a bit and shoot at f4 instead of f2). Still, I love the colors and

got a bit lucky with the composition. This was taken at the New

    Georgia Aquarium, BTW.

This picture is part of a series called "Red State" in my portfolio

so seeing the rest of the folder puts it in much better context.

Behind him is the Varsity, one of the oldest drive-ins in America,

still serving great hot dogs and orange frosties.

This is part of a cross garden in a small town in Alabama where one

gentlemen put an enormous amount of time into covering a couple

acres of land with crosses and cards and washing machines and sheds

all covered with sayings like "Hell is Hot" and "Sex is a Sin".

Thanks! I took some pictures where you could see his face, but you couldn't read the sign as well or see the Varsity sign - and I kinda have a thing for the Varsity where I used to eat as a kid. I did the BW/Color thing in order for this to fit into the rest of my series in that folder. Unfortunately, you don't get to see the electric purple suit he is wearing.
  2. That's funny .... I saw this angle and I thought "that's pretty cool and unusual; it looks just like that carnival shot I commented on a few minutes ago." Lo and behold ....

    Anyway, nice job.

Quality work here. I like that you kept the detail in the little patch of sky and I love the composition. You captured the levels so beautifully. I agree that the border is too heavy and drags it down.

Where is this by the way?

I thought it was two men actually, which made it more interesting for some reason. Anyway, very nice moment. The eye contact from the third person really makes the shot.
  3. I agree about the person ... it might work better is she hadn't been centered. She does add a sense of scale though. Anyway, the tones are great here and I love the composition. Good work.

I have a couple of shots from here in my portfolio. What a wonderful building. The finest church in America, IMHO.

I really like the idea here but it seems as if it lacks a focal point; the two subjects are competing. Maybe a bit less depth of field would have helped?

Intirguing and original. I love the color composition of the door and the tomatoes but I might shoot it a bit more straight on and lose some of the floor which I find a bit distracting.

Nice ... there is a dali painting of a still life of bread that htis reminds me of somehow. Nice realistic color and great composition. I might rotate it a bit to the left.

These are just three little shots I took with my pocket Nikon. The

top two are from a Bar called Abuelo, where they serve great

Langostino alla Plancha and the bottom is a grocery store near Plaza

Mayor. No real unifying theme; I just thought they looked good

    together.

I found the pyramids to be a lot more difficult subject to

photograph than I would have imagined. It's really difficult to take

a shot that isn't just a big triangle in the middle of the picture.

It's even more difficult to do so with one hand while the other hand

pushes away the constant stream of tour guides and salesmen, one of

whom is the subject of this shot. I thought this was another failure

but it kind of came alive when I cropped the top and bottom.
