Using Nikon Coolscan V ED With Newer Computers

Recommended Posts

Hello,
I'm selling my V ED. I think that I've heard that it would not be compatible with any newer PCs. Also, I'm not all that PC savvy. Please tell me what exactly would be the incompatibility with a newer PC and what would be the work around that would enable somebody to be able to use it. I want to warn people in advance so that they are not surprised by this potential problem.

Thanks,
Randy

There is a problem getting the scanner to work on 64 bit Windows machine, but there are solutions, just search the net. This worked for me: http://axelriet.blogspot.com/2009/10/nikon-ls-40-ls-50-ls-5000-scanners-on.html
I use even older Nikon 4000 Coolscan scanner on my Windows 7 64 bit PC without any problems.

Regards, Marko

On my Macintosh, it's USB so I can still connect it, but the Nikon software doesn't run on modern Macintoshes so I have to use Vuescan (which is very good). Still Nikon is failing in it's obligations to it's customers by not at least making their software work on modern computers. But it does work if you are smart enough to find and use vuescan.

windows 98/me was the last operating system that supported the "isa pnp scsi" card.
newer OS will sttill allow you to work but with a pci adaptec 2930/ 2940 card.
They will NOT require a card driver at all,
it may not work with the original software. but something like Vuescan ( if supported by the scanner) should work.,
an alternative is to use the scanner with an older computer..
even as far back as windows 98se ( thpough it lacks support for most newer hardware susch as bideo cards)
and is limited on the www- many sites just do not work.,
Windows 2000/xp with the pci scsi card and decent usb support would be better.
Even an older laptop. as last year's laptop is often considered "disposable"

I would strongly suggest dell as a dell restore disk will eliminate the hassle of other brand pc's a dell restore disk will install XP on a new hard drive no issues. ho hassle.
since scanner manufactires in their wisdom? stopped making dedicated scanners
Just as the need for them became critical, I would suggest you keep yiur scanner.,
'the work around is hire someone to scan your film professionally

You can run NikonScan under Windows 7 (either x32 or x64) on all modern computers.

1) Download NikonScan 4.0.3 from http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/61#Anchor-7
Yes, I know it says for Vista only, but the restriction is for the drivers.

2) Download VueScan from http://www.hamrick.com/index.html

3) Install VueScan. This will install the VueScan drivers for the Coolscan V.

4) Now install Nikon Scan 4.0.3. As part of the installation you have the option to install the Nikon drivers. Do NOT intall the Nikon drivers; uncheck the box. Nikon Scan will use the VueScan drivers to access the Coolscan V.

This installation works perfectly on my machine which runs Windows 7 x64. Even the TWAIN interface that allows me to scan directly into Photoshop (CS5) works.

The solution to this problem first appeared here on pnet in 2009.
It allows one to use the NikonScan software which, IMHO, is preferrable to VueScan and other alternatives.

The fact that Nikon themselves did not come up with this simple fix (and ignored repeated requests for assistance) remains a permanent blot on their copybook.

I found that Brooks's method didn't work for me. The method that worked for me was some editing a ini file or something ... It works now, but it's buggy with my CS 4000 on Win7 x64 Pro. Vuescan otoh works flawlessly.

When I start Nikon Scan software, it tells me I have a hardware error, if I ignore I can preview it but now and then it gives me color casts, thru rebooting and restarting the scanner or software it may go away momentarily. To me it means that I need to expect that I would stop half way thru scanning series of films ... I haven't got Vuescan (just the demo) so I just scan the odd frame when I need a higher reso, I usually use my Epson V700 for low reso just so I can preview the images in Lightroom. But IMO, the Epson provides better color at least straight out of the box (for me). Even when the CS does work, the color at least needs some custom settings.
