  1. Not sure if anyone has talked about Lex in a while but I just saw an X/Twitter post with "Boxxy" and it reminded me of him. He'd "Rick Roll" you with a link to a Boxxy video in the early days of YouTube. Look up the name on YouTube. Did anyone on photo.net actually know & hang out with him? Or stay in touch now? He was knowledgeable but had such great dry humor in his posts. Eric Sande
  2. Not sure how well film is made these days but it could be the film cartridges themselves. I recall some that advanced a little rough with my FE2 but it was rare when film was king.
  3. The macro feature on the 28-105 is handy but it doesn't really achieve 1:2 as advertised. I bought the 28-105 back in 1999 and eventually got an AF-D 105 - compared them at 1:2 and the zoom fell short. The Nikon 60 still fetches a fairly high price used - there has already been mention of going longer for more working room. I sold my 105 a while back but wanted a macro again recently and Tamron's old 90mm screw-drive AF macros are as good as Nikon in my opinion and run under $150 on eBay.

    F100 vs. F6

I love a good zombie thread! I handled an F6 in a shop in 2004 when I'd already had an F100 since 2000. I had money to burn at that time and I think the F6 was ~US$2,400. As nice as that camera was, the tech inside it wasn't going to make me a better photographer. Eric Sande
  5. I shot some T-Max 3200 with my FE2 in 1998...not sure if I ever hit 1/4000.
  6. Seems like the lens is OK if it works on an AF film body. Do you have any other screw-drive AF lenses to try on the D7000? I have a D7000 but don't recall any settings that would affect any difference between AF-S and screw drive lenses. Could be a classic case of cleaning contacts. Eric Sande
  7. Don't bother with the DK-19. I'm not sure how recent cameras are but it is intended for the eyepieces that were found in the F3HP, F4, F5, F6 and pro DSLRs. I have an old Nikon Full Line Product Guide that specified a DK-2 (same as DK-19) for the F100 so I bought that 20 years ago. It sort of worked but wouldn't stay on. I used to like eyecups when I could shoot without glasses. I see a new DK-6 on eBay right now for $10. That's what they have always cost. 8. It sure sounds like an electronic issue. Are you enough of a long-time Nikon user to have a manual focus body? If I were to experience this issue I'd want to see if the lens was at least still mechanically sound by running it through apertures on the B setting and looking to see if the blades closed down incrementally. Eric Sande
  9. The N90/N90s bodies have the same diameter that started with the F3HP and has continued up to today. A DK-17M will thread onto an N90; don't know what the view is like, though.
  10. We've got two terms mated together that define different products - diopters are for eyesight correction and a magnifier enlarges the viewfinder image. When I had a D2x I used a DK-17M to enlarge the DX view. It was an item that was available before the D3 came out to improve the view. In the time I had my D2x/DK-17M I never put the magnifier on one of my film cameras to see how it affected the view. Eric Sande
  11. Excellent! Good to hear. Eric Sande
  12. "I did read something about contacts and tried to clean it. Any tips on what exactly should I look for and how to clean the contacts?" I've really only had to clean contacts once with any of my cameras (back button on an F100 wasn't behaving). A quick wipe with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth fixed things in that situation. Eric Sande
  13. When pressing the other buttons on the top row (MODE - SELECT - ADJUST) does the command dial do what it is supposed to do? Likely the old "clean the contacts" issue. I bought an N90s with MF-26 back in 2005 and quickly gave up trying to make use of the back. I would have needed to use its features constantly to be able to remember how to utilize it. Or carry a printout of the manual everywhere I went! Eric Sande
  14. I sold a lot of gear a while ago while it still fetched some decent prices. I had two F3 bodies that were given to me but I never warmed up to them; not sure about 2022 but eBay prices were hot for awhile and got $180 each for them. A D2x I bought new still held some value and KEH gave me $1,300 for it in 2009 (paid $4,000 after rebate in 2006). The film AF bodies I sold could barely be given away - one N90s I put on eBay sold for about $25. I bought it used myself for way less than its original $899 price when it was #2 in the Nikon lineup.
  15. I used to have a Nikon 18-70mm DX lens that was fine for its basic image quality but the distortion at 18mm was horrible. If I took a photo at a beach the horizon would be noticeably bowed when in normal areas of the frame for good composition. Eric Sande
  16. I'm reasonably sure that Sears lenses were re-branded Vivitar. Eric Sande
  17. My old Nikon Full Line Product Guide says the 70-180mm focuses to 14.6 inches providing 1:1.32 reproduction. Not sure if a person could tell the difference of .32 by rigging up a 6T for 1:1. I had a 6T for a few years and sold it (for way too little at the time) after purchasing a dedicated macro lens. It was a bit clumsy to use on a zoom lens but provided good results on film at the time. Eric Sande
  18. I've never looked at my FE2 close enough to realize the shutter speed dial was held on by external screws. Did you use any thread lock to keep them in place? That's some dedication to hold out so long for a replacement part! Eric Sande
  19. I kind of miss my early days with photography when I had 1 body, consumer 28-80 and 80-200 zooms and a decent tripod. Never any decision making when I was going out. Eric Sande
  20. Nice, though much more complicated than what I do for quick copying. I just photograph a slide on a light box with a 90mm 1:1 macro lens. Eric
  21. For those that do not have FB accounts, there is not much discussion on the post about the lens but here is the photo the owner posted. Eric
  22. Looks like this thread may end up in the Great Black Hole of Nikon Mysteries that never reach resolution. Eric Sande
  23. I dozed off early on during the Super Bowl but saw some of the post-game stuff from the field and noticed that all the backgrounds were blurred as if using an f/1.4 lens wide open. I heard something on the radio Monday morning about how it was a new camera/video technique but my first thought was that it hid the fact that the stadium was almost empty. I don't know if it was used during the game at all - I dozed off because I currently work graveyard. When I woke up & saw post game stuff it did look pretty cool and was quite obvious to me. Eric Sande
  24. I have an old AI f/1.4 and owned a standard AF f/1.8 non-D for awhile. I eventually sold the f/1.8 for lack of use; nothing wrong with it in my opinion. For my use I really don't find f/1.4 any more useful than f/1.8 to warrant the extra cost. Eric Sande
