Beyond The Fringe (Click for larger view)
scotttyrrell commented on alfbailey's gallery image in Landscape
Alf, I like this image very much indeed. The composition is perfect with the central copse of trees dominating the attention and others receding into the mist. I like the fact that we can make some houses out, all be it very indistinctly. It adds something to the image, a narrative element, a sort of voyeuristic quality. I like the reeds very much, and they kind of add to the narrative angle (for me), as I can easily imagine them as my own eyelashes as I gaze upon this morning scene through half closed eyes. The mist and the subtle toning (?) of elements of this shot help create a slightly surreal, dreamlike mood that also supports my interpretation. The vignetting is ok I suppose and kind of adds to the mood, but I don't like the darker band of sky along the top edge. I don't know if you've added a gradient here or not, but I would have expected the mist to be evenly lit. But perhaps I'm wrong! Artistically, I think a fade to white (or the toned colour) would have been perhaps preferable, at least for me anyway as it could have helped further support my interpretation of the image. I guess the darker band feels a little constricting, less ethereal. But, very small points and just one way, my way, of experiencing this really lovely image. I could sit on that bank in contemplation for a very long time! Thanks. -

xroads An excerpt from my Storyteller Collection "XRoads"
scotttyrrell commented on cognimephotostudio's gallery image in Nude and Erotic
I think this is a great shot. I love the central placement of the man, his pose and the background. I like the back illumination and the conversion is well handled. I'm slightly distracted by the white area bottom left (not his bottom!) and the violin, which I'm sure is integral to the story, is a little lost, has visually a limited significance. Other than that, a really great shot. Thanks -
You've done really well to get all four flowers on the same focal plane, especially with such a narrow dept of field. The out of focus areas look silky smooth, but manipulated? Black and white is a good choice for this shot as there is enough interesting tonal variations on the flowers, however this shot looks subtly tinted to me. Or have my eyes finally packed up? Either way, nice result

Low tide oyster beds marsh foggy sunrise
scotttyrrell commented on henryr's gallery image in Landscape
A pleasant sunrise scene that is suitably evocative of the calm and stillness of morning. The colours are lovely, and the lone seagull makes the shot. I don't like the central Horizon in this shot though, not cause I'm a pedant, just don't feel it works for this photo. Too much empty space bottom of frame. You went the pano route with this crop, I wander if you went far enough? Thanks -

single photos Light through the canopy
scotttyrrell commented on Caledonia's gallery image in Landscape
Compositionally this is really superb, as is the stunning depth of field. You've handled the contrast in light very well and I love the upper portion of this shot I'm not a fan of the seemingly overly saturated colours. There seems to be an issue with the blues/purples, particularly in the water surrounding the stone and on the sycamore leaves in the foreground. It appears a little unnatural. -
Night shots in colour are so hard to get right, at least i find them so. i always want the blue cast to be more representative of night, but without going black and white that can almost never be so. I knew this what a night shot before I saw the title, and think it is really well done. Evocative. I had thought however, that this was early morning, as it looks like first light in the lower left horizon! Great shot, thanks.
