    Last autumn colors

    Indeed, lovely contrasting colours.

Wow, a really impressive portrait. The very shallow depth of field is perfectly executed and handled here. Great texture without being overly done, low key feel but the clamshell lighting allows for crisp clear details. Direct and confrontational, but also naked and honest. Great shot, thanks.
  3. A really interesting photo. It is almost uncomfortably intimate. The crop forces my gaze down her top and makes me question the tattoo, if that it what it is. Although i can not see her eyes, i know they are locked on mine, I feel as though I have violated her body. This mood is further enhanced by the gritty, high contrast style, and by the fact that this photo appears not to have been posed. I should note, that all of this makes the photo for me and is not meant negatively. I enjoy being challenged by photography. Thanks

    Point of Ayr

Hey Jed, I much prefer the composition of this one, it works so much better for me. As before the colours are fantastic and the rippled sand is a perfect foreground. The blurred clouds work well and nicely frame the lighthouse. I have the same lens as you and, at its widest, often have trouble with distortion. Correcting this is easy, although depending on the scene, the results can often be undesirable. I think with this shot, that you have enough space and so few other vertical lines, that you could get that lighthouse and it's reflection perfectly straight without adversely affecting the rest of the image. I mean this in no way as a criticism, as I really love the image and, after all, the "fault" was not yours but the limitations of wide angled lenses. Thanks.

    Lake District

Paul. I really like this image, the tones are so soft and really work here in engendering mood and atmosphere. I was actually first drawn to your last shot in this series, but even though I liked it, there was something that didn't quite work. As I couldn't adequately quantify what that was, I refrained from posting. This one definitely works, I love it. I used to live in Keswick, and this makes me a little homesick! Great job.

I disagree. The sun makes this shot and is, incidentally, very well handled. Tricky exposure. I live the composition, the colours and the great use of light.

The exposure on the face is perfect. I love the muted pastel colours and the well intentioned and executed dating of this shot. Charming.

Fantastic documentary shot. Very well executed.

    Painted Flower 2

I'm not sure how you achieved this effect, but the result is very pleasing. It would look great on someones wall! Thanks

As regards the backdrop, I guess using something either more textured or with heavier folds would have added that element of highlight and shadow. I wonder why you wanted that though? I find the viewpoint a little odd in this shot. Normally a low viewpoint puts the viewer in a sort of submissive position in regards to the subject, or at least it gives the subject a feeling of power, dominance. Here, your subject looks bored. A direct gaze would have helped, as would a more dynamic posture. The light is nice enough, and well managed, and I guess it fits the mood, such as it is. A bit of fill light from a reflector, stand him a few steps away from the background and use a lower f-stop, focus on the face and the light would make for a nice simple portrait.

    #498

First of all, and very simply, I love this image. It has so much mood and atmosphere, the textures are fantastic, and I love the processing. Have you added a little grain here? It works. A happy accident with the camera shake or planned? or is it neither and just the strong wind on the grass and a relatively low shutter speed? Simple and simply great. Thanks
  12. Both grew shots, but of the two I prefer this one. There's a pensive quality here that's very touching.

    Lighthouse Reflection

A pleasing image Jed with lovely colours and a very interesting foreground. It may just be my eye, but the image "appears" to slope to the right. My only other suggestion, would be playing with the crop a little. As is, there seems to me to be a slight imbalance, perhaps a little too much sky on the right. I think a square aspect crop with the lighthouse positioned in the right third could really help. Perhaps! Anyway, I really like this soft and gentle image.
  14. The background is, of course, absolutely stunning. Perfectly exposed, great light and sublime natural colours. The reflection is perfect. The foreground just doesn't do this image justice. I bet you hunted around for just a little foreground interest to balance and anchor this shot, and this was the best you could find? I wonder whether perhaps, in this situation with little alternatives available, you could have used a polarising filter and a long exposure to flatten the water, having the tooth if rock suspended in heaven on a bed of water.

    IMG_1046-2

A lovely shot full of movement and texture, with lovely soft colours. The early start has been well rewarded here, I can feel the crispness, almost taste the fresh air.

    Chains

The texture, the colour, it feels almost organic. Like a pile of maggots, or a coral. Really interesting shot.

    Thlumuwi

I love the composition here, it really does add depth to the image. Shame you couldn't have shot the images at a different time, but the conditions are managed well none the less.
  18. Fantastic abstract. Really well seen. I love this shot. It looks like the arm of a record player and a record!

    SMP_0855a copy

Really striking low-key image with a dark and brooding tone, matched by the models gave. It is balanced however by the slight element of timidity, noted by the above. Perhaps it is just the placement of the hands. A really great shot which would have been lifted by either a background or rim light.
  20. An elegant shot with lovely layers of autumn colours. As Radu Carp said above, autumn seems to have come a good few weeks earlier where you are compared to here in Germany. Shots like this are an inspiration to get outside and take full advantage of this most beautiful of seasons.

    Under the Pier

Simple but very effective. I love how you've framed this with the two nearest pillars, it really draws you in and allows no other viewpoint. Needed the detail under the pier, so good processing as well. Great shot

    Kaanapali Evening

First thought was that this is over saturated, however as the sky shows, this is not the case. Lovely greens and blues. Also, love the shutter speed. Movement and detail in the water.
