  1. Pocket wizards are only designed to trigger flash units..... My manual with the Plus Xs says that Pocket Wizard model will trigger a camera with the proper cord. I believe them. Though right now I am using a Vello ( cheap enough) set to trigger the camera with the PW in the flash shoe. Anyway, that is just a side bar. I agree with rodeo joe naturally. As a side bar to the mythology that surrounds our dearly beloved hobby, I make these assertions and duck for flying crockery while doing so--- 1) there is no such thing as a film look, namely a look that can not be duped in digital or with photo shop to match film. Try to tell in my gallery which b and w shots were Plus X and which were 5 mp from the Olympus E-1.
  2. OK, if my puss will not keep the trick or treaters away. Here is a test with this single umbrella box.
  3. Single light source I go for....if it is big enough. I guess it does everything except hair light which maybe could be done with a reflector. But one could use a small shoe flash on a pole and set it to the long zoom. Got to try that.. ( I bought a couple Apollo modifers 25 years ago that my Navy workshop guy strongly suggested. Not recommended because the flash has to be engulfed by the Apollo. I want to see the bleeding screen on my flash whether it be Quantum or my Olympus FL 50.) I know all about radio control and all...but if I can reach it, I like to be able to twiddle the dials so to speak..
  4. Answer Tim- I do of course. If I say it is photographic, then it is...what you want a Gallup Poll? On the other hand, some goofy people would say avant garde means break rules and there are no rules. If so, why do we congregate in a place called PHOTO NUTZ, Don't answer :-)
  5. I have had this umbrella style softbox style light modifier for some time. My challenge was to get a strobe with a head that has no shaft hole close enough to fit in the sock. By george I think I have got if finally. So you put the sock on the Quantum before mounting the reflector. Then you use a Stroboframe bracket- if they still sell one like this- to mount the flash. Permits umbrellas Softlighter shaft to be about two inches from flash head and on similar axis. Plus, in my set up, the Stroboframe allows angling of the flash. Yeah my Norman pack crapped out and I got tired of AC power cords anyway... With my mirrorless GX 8 and a Quantum T 5d and Turbo 3 I can be mobile and set up a portrait wherever and whenever. Yes, I do use a flash meter and manual setting. Takes little enough time. I thought I would share this in the lighting section and welcome any other ideas. PS: Photek provides zip info on the unit when I bought it except how to not smash the ribs....but I still do not know what the velcro tabs on the front panel are there to do...(duh). Any idea? i guess I could call or e mail the company, but this place is such a cornucopia of ideas....aloha, gs

  7. I hope I do not offend by suggesting where I would turn. Namely to those who are electronics engineering experts in radio frequency devices, their range and characteristics. With umpteen gazillion years of experience with RF, I would call and talk to someone at the home of the Pocket Wizards ( you said you have a couple). I am just getting into that system, but it looks like they have encountered all of the variables over the years. Could likely come up with a couple ideas for a camera or two. i miss the idea of a what do you call it a crash camera...but not important. I assume rugged and maybe even destructible sacrificial in the long haul. on a car roof, cabin, etc..? i would not go back to film models unless that is your affectionate desire, since nothing they do can not be achieved in the digital world...that is an opinion I think I may share with others in the community. Film is good. Film is no better than a good digital sensor. But anyway. ask the experts and see what variables they define. And who knows maybe they have even worked with owners of the kind of camera bodies and lenses you contemplate....inexpensive? Yep, never buy expensive. And never pay retail either, just joshing. I wish you well, friend.

Lovely, John. Ah to be nimble instead of just wise.... I have observed that the aristocratic look in neck is a defining feature in jewelry ads and the like. Your model has that swan like attribute. As to the lighting, you have mastered the glow for skin. And though wall is close, no shadow to distract. Good. The bent hand. interesting. Since the reverse form of fingers is feminine and the female can use it instead of or in lieu of a prop. ( Clearly a male could not use fingers in that fashion with orthopedic or behavioral therapy. I am still interested in male female poses is why I bring this to the comments. But bottom line, I love the model and admire the idea of her stance and balance. Likely can dance as well, am I right?
  9. Someone put a plaster bumper thing next to the Display button which the right thumb seems to hit often. Could be one needs a larger camera. I wonder how the GH 5 would fit the hand and have the right real estate. Someday I will get to try one. In Hawaii not likely at least in current retail environment for photo..Jim.
  10. Thanks. So it is not just about narcissisim- as a friend suggested. Latest communication mode you say. Photography just a handy medium without standards. Standards even disrupts intention perhaps. I am getting the idea, thanks. The Angry Photographer, Jochen?. I love title.
  11. Imagine if I did a vlog. This would be the gist. Here I am with my camera on my bike handlebars with am eBay bracket.... Excuse the shaking. I tried to do a rock dodge but missed the pot hole while chatting at you my friends....and here is the parking lot where I get my grits..( fade to black) ...sorry for delay as I am in a hospital bed in traction. Those dumbass Califonia drivers need to learn to back up carefully. But my face is unscarred and I still have that sexy cleft in my chin. ..check out the PM nurse. Hubba hubba to coin a phrase.... I know. I know. One could even call Venus Barely Legal's cam videos a form of vlogging, eh what? Can one vlog in pjs. A bathrobe of silk? What did Heff wear?
  12. Been looking for a way latelyt that I can open with a page of John Peri's sensuous and elegant nudes. Charges my batteries before the days news..... No kids, no bosses. My wife does n 't care. I jest. But not compoletely.. I cannot even go to PN at my library they embargoed the whole web site!. We are a funny society. There is now an app that will hide nudes and vault them, True. I am ecletic and open. I also like landscapes, some abstracts and some other stuff. I can accept good animal shots. and once in a while a praying mantis if handsome. But no more flowers for a while... Everything is personal and let it be so without reproach. Bethe has a valid issue. Aloha nui
  13. Here was the response to some technical advice (gratuitously) offered. Not sought since vlogging declared an "anti photographic" form. " ...Vlogging = Worse Photographic Practices combined into one: Shoot Close 1 Arm Away Shoot Wide (to capture surrounding) Shoot while Moving About You cannot avoid facial distortion You cannot avoid harsh outdoor lighting You cannot avoid acne scar from showing That is why Vlogging tend to be popular with the Young & Beautiful teenagers with great skin.,," end quote,,, How does this grab you? Any room for technical guidance in that genre or what?

I could wake up with a smile too. Seriously, a nice casual image. Well done again.

    Mediterranean beach...

My wife with me on the beach. I would likely get admonished for my wayward glances, John. We can fantasize. Tan lines, who quibbles about tan lines. Prurient but purty.
  16. I like the use of complimentary colors in a delicate way to draw contrast with the model glowing skin. Window light is always great. And unforced natural. A tribute to the genre.
  17. Gentlemanly discourse, John, hard to find. Nowadays.St least online, it seems like go to a neutral corner, and wait for the bell and never hold a punch back. Tom Friedman talked about the anger industry. I think I take your point far above. Fair one. I miss Lex Jenkins who pulled no punches but did it in a nice way. Kept civility in check as a moderator. I follow Lex on his FB page btw. He does a lot of bicycling these days, doing long rou

  19. PN has value. It has had better. I miss some of the faces of the past. And a sense of someone in control with a shared passion for the enterprise. If that be harsh, I accept the charge.
  20. Aggravation boulevard. With Windows 95 we expected same. Nowadays we lack the will to accomodate such matters. i have problem sometimes in posting to No Words and get a server error. And sometimes I just give up on the exercise. Not my job to de bug since I assume someone got a paid contract to meet a target performance. large assumption. We hang on.
  21. Minoltas were good and still hold up well. I am still using a Minolta !V that I bought new 20 plus years ago. It has only the problem of being a bit complicated to use but has a lot of goodies and works with one AA cell. If you want to spend on a current model, I would suggest either a Sekonic or a Gossen. I also have a reflected light 10 degree semi spot attachment for the Minolta which is still out there as a good used model. It was a step up from the one you have..for simplicity of use I think the Sekonics are worth checking on for functions you desire.
