    Thank you, Giangiorgio,

    This is the same bird

but you can see that it was windy day. On this particular day temperature was below zero and very windy. This guy just finished its lunch and resting in satisfactory mood. Later I will post pictures where he is in process of taking his lunch.

    Hi Giangiorgio,

I was lucky to watch the whole process from very close distance, about 3 meters, from egg-laying to leaving-the-nest. The process from hatching-the-eggs to leaving-the nest took less the than three week, It is when I took a couple thousand photos. So I pretty accurately have documented the whole process.

The order of these two photos is actually opposite: firstly "feeding stage" and then "watching stage". I'm not a zoologist and at first I was puzzled what he/she (in my understanding both parents are equal in the nursing process) doing after feeding, why he/she watches calmly after feeding a minute or so on chicks. It looks like it makes some kind decision or admiringly looking at the new generation. But then I figured out what she/he is doing is waiting when chicks will be defecating. Immediately when a chick takes the position to defecate, the parent neatly catches the capsule and swallows it.

The parent also clean up the nest regularly. I know the bald eagle chicks (at least at some adult stage), jet feces outside the nest. So the ground under the tree becomes white. The jay chicks cannot do so. The parents clean up the nest regularly and carry away the feces. So the ground under the tree always is clean. That could be an adaptation mechanism to make more difficult for predators to find the nest. BTW, when no parents around, the chicks are very quiet and make no sound. And even during the feeding they are very quiet. Compare to, for example, starling chicks who are very noisy.

I'm not a specialist in such type of photo, but to my taste the light is harsh, the shadows is too noticeable and distract. Look at nose and the chin areas. I think, the light should be more disperse

    Thank you for kind words.

Radu, there is nothing special. I used GND filter (which is noticeable), 16-35 2.8 Canon lens and 5DIII, at f=16mm, shutter speed - 1 sec at f/14, ISO 100, 7:49 AM, 2012-12-08. Temperature was a bit higher 0 degree Celsius, which causes frost, you noticed. In Lightroom postprocessing I added  contrast, sharpness, clarity and slightly vibrance. I also moved colour balance more to yellow otherwise the foreground is too blue (the dry grass in fact is light yellow). I also used "Camera landscape" profile and gradual filter on the bottom to align a bit brightness (I think not enough).

Thanks again to everyone for viewing

  1. Thank you Dave for suggestions. I doubt someone knows whose this face is. This all is act of God. But if someone still thinks who is this person, please let me know:) Please note, that the photo underwent only basic post-processing: BW transformation, sharpness, contrast, etc. No any photoshop tricks

  2. While on recent trip to Olympic NP, Washington, visited very popular place -

La Push. Taking pictures of stormy ocean I also noticed something ...

    Thank you for feed back
