  1. "Why would the slit widen and narrow as the shutter curtains move?" At the beginning of the exposure the gap between the curtains widens until the scond curtain starts moving and at the end of the exposure the gap narrows as soon as the first curtain stops moving up to the point where the second curtain ends its travel. The shutter curtains of a vertically travelling shutter cover the height of the gate in almost precisely 1/300th second. The width between the two curtains determines the length of the exposure (AKA "shutter speed".)
  2. Sharp cityscapes mean using a tripod, live view to focus with and either a wired or wireless release and a self-timer.
  3. Unless you can see that themirror is not going all the way down, as the saying goes: that's not a fault, that is a feature!
  4. Now that I have seen the photo in question , that is really sloppy. I am very surprised. If the prints were produced by McCurry's studio as part of a solo exhibition instead of being prepared by someone else as part of a group exhibition organized and printed by that oganization, someone at his studio -his studio manager specifically - has a lot to answer for as they have embarrassed McCurry and made him look stupid. McCurry is taking public responsibility but someone needs to be shown the door.
  5. Without having all or really any facts, only a heresay accusation thrown like s sloppily tossed hand grenade, it is hard to know what to pass judgement in any way that is fair or reasoned.
  6. If an unexposed but processed roll of negative film isn't clear and there are no manufacturer's imprints on the edges of the film the lab is lying to you.
  7. It looks like an instrument recording camera. Maybe for a microscope or oscilloscope.
  8. Hiw to trash your Lightroim or Photoshop preference file, courtesy of Katrin Eismann (side note: if you work in Photoshop and you don't know who she is, it well behooves you to find out) "Trash the prefs just like in PS. Quit and relaunch while pressing command + option+ shift...and click yes to reset prefs.”
  9. Try turning it off, and relaunching after 10-30 seconds. If that does not work, turn it off again, trashing the preferences, and then relaunching.
  10. A book I highly recommend about the business and life of being a professional artist is "The War Of Art" by Stephen Pressfield. Don't get started without it.
  11. Without knowing your location or what ypu are doing for marketing, how can anyone give you the answer you want. Most likely the answer is none unless you already have people asking you to shoot their pirtraits in which case you know the answer for the first month. The second month will jave something to do with how many of those people then refer you to other people, etc. But from a cold start, a safe bet for at least the first six months is zero.
  12. Have you tried selecting all of the images from that shoot abd them switching the sort order?
  13. I missed the bit about street photography. In that case, one of the Fuji rangefinders.
  14. Pentax 67 II. Sure it is a big camera but the full range ofv lenses rival anything Zeiss or Schneider ever produced. Just use mirtor lockup (and a tripod) for expisures between 1/60 and 1 second.
  15. That is a silly and worse, false, premise to start from and starting from false premises rarely leads to anything but a false conclusion. Perhaps you should do your homework or do it better? Given what yoy say you do, the EOS 5DS is the better choice.
  16. Completely surround the object with matte silver (not white)cards. Cut a hole in the card facing the front of the set to shoot through. Why matte silver instead of white? If you use white the color reflected by the metalic objects will be white and you want them to look like metal. Keep in mind that if defining shape is important some small black cards in different shapes and sizes will be useful. Use a softbox over the top of the set. IF you are using flash units with 7" diameter reflectors and IF you can find one, the very rare Balcar 55 box light will be useful. Essentially it works like a ring light but the light is completely indirect. the flash attaches to the base of the unit and the light is directed to the sloping sides. There is a port on the back of the unit to shoot through. The front of the unit is 16x20 inches and the overal shape is like a vertically bisected flat top pyramid. Balcar made these in the mid-1970s specifically for photographers photographing watches who needed a directional light that very clearly lit the watch face and mechanism but cast no shadow and produced minimal highlight glare. As I said these are very rare. I have only sern two of them and one of those is the one I bought on eBay several years ago.
  17. Shooting landscapes? D810 Shooting wildlife? D7200. Shooting fast moving action or at very high ISOs? D4s or D5.
  18. Element by element lets break this down: The D4 can record simultaneously on two pieces of media: XQD and CF. Do you have your camera set up to do that? If so: Does it happen on both types of media? If so, the camera is at fault and needs to be repaired or replaced. If the camera is set up to record on only piece of media at a time: Does it happen only on different CF or only on XQD media cards? If so there maybe a fault in the camera regarding that channel. If the fault only occurs on specific pieces of media but not on similar pieces, then the fault is with that or those individual piece of media and they need to be replaced.
  19. Short answer: Rent a 5DS or 5DSR. And use live view to focus. Your client has told you their requirements, why are you wasting energy and time trying to second guess them? Yes you can interpolate files to be larger or smaller but you will always risk losing something in the process.
  20. Wht color is the wall and the ceiling in the place? How high are the ceilings? It makes zero sense to try and bounce the flash if they are dark or black or if the ceiling is high.
