1.
Hi,
I bought my first DSLR, 6 months ago and my areas of interests are wildlife, landscapes and cityscapes.
There are a few issues that are bothering me a lot and I will ask them here one by one.
My first question is about focus. I am trying to master cityscapes at dusk/blue hour and only thrice did I get nice sharp pictures (by fluke). About 30 times I came back home and deleted the pictures in disappointment. There are 3 modes to focus on my Canon 70d. (And my lens are 17-40 mm, 70-300 mm )
1. Single point focus
2. Manual selection of some cluster of points and
3. 19 point AF
They say choose the first one for cityscapes. Out of 19 points which point do I select and where do I keep it on the subject ? Imagine I am shooting a skyline and I have water infront of me and then the buildings. I want all the buildings sharp.
I use a tripod, 2 seconds timer and mirror lock up. I shoot manual mode (M), f11, iso 100, 5-30 seconds shutter speed, AWB, one shot, evaluative metering.

And, should I first use the lens auto focus and get the focus and then pull the switch back to manual focus or should I manually turn the ring to get sharp focus while viewing the live screen ?

PLEASE be patient and start explaining from ABCs. I need to understand this properly once and for all. I am extremely tired of non sharp buildings.

Thanking you in anticipation !!

- Ray
