2.
fx
d610 - "cheap" and good
d750 - "cheap" and good
d810 - expensive and excellent

for your photography i'd pick up a d610.
if money is no issue i'd pick up a d810 or maybe wait half a year or so
if they throw something new at us with the d5.

  3.
lorne!!!
that's proof that the loch ness monster exists after all!
or what loch's monster is this then :D

  5.
i havent used ur type of pw but it came to my mind that your problem could be caused by the delay of the pocketwizard.

  6.
did you accidentally lock the shutter speed to 1/30 of a second in the menu?
because you can do that.

menu, wrench thingy, exposure/flash, flash speed

choose ur speed
set it to 1/250th
or lower.

the 1/250th, 1/320th auto fp
is the high speed sync for faster exposures than 1/250th of a second.

  7.

jeweler screw driver kit

me beeing a nickel nurser i bought two sets of cheap jeweler screw driver kits...they all broke,..get something good...

  8.
in recent times i keep forgetting stuff.
i guess i am overworked..last weekend i took a train for some hours to photograph stuff just to realize i did not put my batteries in my bag, even though i handled them just before leaving the house. i neatly put them on the shelf..what was that. i did take a photo with my mobile..i am not so very sure where this thing is now either..starting sunday..
yesterday i went to take long time exposures for this topic and now i cannot rememeber where i put the god damn cf card.
old people say that forgeting stuff is a sign of getting old.
i would say that is not true as i take it as a sign of not caring.
so what do i care about..well..i dont know right now..ill figure it out in my spare time after may.

and now for something completely different..i forgot what photo i wanted to post in the first place ..so here is this:

nikon d3, 70-200 2.8g vr1
some high iso..dunno

linked from my tumblr: nwfoto.tumblr.com
see you next weekend...no, not weekend, what was it..sometime.
in the meanwhile, do not forget about ...stuff..nikon wednesday!

:)

  9.
every lens in your kit is the best for flowers.
it depends on what you do with it.

there is no such thing as "the best for ...."

  10.
hey dean

i would recomment you read the books written by joe mcnally.
http://blog.joemcnally.com/

he wrote them in a fun, entertaining way and also manages to get quite a bit across.
he does have two dvds too or maybe more ..i dnt know.
i have seen one out of those.
the language of light.
it is fun to watch and youll get at least something out of it.

i photograph with flash like this:

1 shot to check scene
expose for the light
bring in flash
change values of flash and camera till you have what you want, or adjust as you go.

works quite well
does require a lot of testing yourself though.
but i really do not know much about technical stuff.

just follow the light :)

good luck

  11.
i have photos of trees too.
here is one

d3 + 16-35

  12.
http://www.wildlifeinpixels.net/blog/

andy astbury has a nice blog that explains a lot of things, including autofocus.

he is currently working on a pdf about autofocus.
i was lucky to have a read of this in it's working stage, and i can highly recomment it
to anyone interested in how autofocus works and a lot more in depth information.

suitable for all sorts of photographers, from beginners to professionals.
it might be a bit rough on newbies though as there is a ton of information.
i'd say that is a good thing

check his blog, wait for the pdf.

no, i do not get money for this advertising.
yes, it is that highly recommented that i do this for free.

  13.
well thats awesome to hear.
i was googeling about recovery software since i got nothing to do right now.
did not find anything usefull though.
great it worked.
good luck for the future.

cheers

i hate sd cards !

  14.
format the card

haha

well
some sort of recovery software maybe?

  15.
i have been taking photos in some rough conditions..this has never happened to me with nikon.
with canon yes, the wheel of doom does do weird things if not locked.

in a studio..
what is it that you are doing i wonder?
well..i guess somethings must not be told anyway ;)

go for the tape, that does always help.
i would recomment something that does not have the strongest glue ever.

there are those textile based duct tapes, that are quite similar to gaffer's tape but do have a somewhat smooth
surface.
they do not leave tons of glue when removed from the camera.

i do not now the name but hope you have an idea for what you might wanna look out instead of gaffer's tape.

good luck

    underexposure

that seems to be the aperture control.
i had a similar issue on my d3.

qg de bakker wrote that on the first page.

send it in, repair it.

ah well,..didnt see the alst postings for some reason ..

  17.
i made quite some prints with the d3x on 100x80 something.
they are perfect, no pixels whatsoever without any size managment, straight from the raw to tif to print.

the d3x is a horrible performer in terms of high iso stuff, however nikon's grain does look quite cool.

for that prize i would take it, but that is just me, beeing in love with the body design.

..worth considering

  18.
a friend of mine with his favourite band, red fang
vienna, arena, 2011
canon eos 1d mk 3, 28mm @f1.8, iso 6400

linked from my tumblr: http://nwfoto.tumblr.com/

  19.
i cannot get rid of the feeling that i did already post those rocks once.

well then..
now for something completely different.

i shot a series called "ich und der gorilla" (i and the gorilla) which was about how we interact
with each other when getting to know one another in a romantic relationship.
structures, social mechanisms, abuse of power, methods and so on.
shot with mamyia rz 67 on portra 400, published.
my friends jeremias altmann (gorilla) and jessyca r. hauser as "ich".
they were a couple at the time.

we could never really figure out how we were supposed to end the story.
ironically they broke up.

"sketches" and ideas i shot with my d3.
here is one photo, a behind the scenes if you will, an idea that did not make it into the story

  20.
jenga, anyone?
lots of rocks

nikon d3, 85mm

  21.
the image with the tree still seems to have big errors in it,...

i would send it in. straight away.

  22.
congrats..that is one sexy camera :p

  23.
where are you from?
a local camera store?
a big store like b&h?
nikon?
you obviously are not qualified, hence the post.
where did you buy it?
was it supposed to be in this shape?
if not...send it back...

hmm..
reasonable amount of money...
hmm...

i have had different experiences with lens repairs.

they were always around 300-500 euros (nikon 16-35, 70-200).
once they screwed up the alignment of the segments in the wideangle, given it a heavy blur on one side of the 16-25...they fixed it for free. a second time with another 16-35, i checked the cornersharpness, the lens was better than before and with the 70-200 the technician forgot to put glue on the screws inside, the tubus became lose and this happened months after the repair..that was annyoing. however they fixed it for free after i had it opened by a local technician confirming it was their bad as none of the screws inside had any glue on them.

so here is the funny thing.
do not buy broken stuff in the first place...and if you do, be prepared for repairs.
there is no reasonable amount of money..there is just what you are planning to spend your money on...

next time you will probably be more carefully...sorry to be that harsh...but there isnt much to add to that..

something i guess we all learned the hard way ;)

my advice to you:
send it in and let them give you an estimate of what the repair might cost.
this however costs you around 25euros
try nikon.

good luck

    DX vs. FX

d 7200 sounds like the perfect camera for you. i dont see any reason why you should not get one.
enjoy

  25.
alright alright.
i am not going to drag this towards the digital vs film debate deliberately but i kind of have to.sorry

there is not much difference between the two cameras besides shutterspeed of 1/2000max of the f50 vs the 1/8000max of the f100 and the better build quality of the nikon f100. the f 100, does have more points it meteres with and also comes with a larger field of view in the viewfinder (96%-f100 vs 92%-f50).
the f100 also offeres spotmetering which can be very helpful when starting with photography to take notes, write stuff down, also to experiement with it, as it is important to LEARN STUFF ! (really? ,...hell yeah, i just said that!)
the f100 allows you to change viewfinder plates, allowing you to switch to splitscreens for the manual focus lenses, the f50 does not.
also the autofocus on the f100 is better than the one in the f50.
compared to todays standard the autofocus is not that great but i never really had an issue with it.
the f100 allows you to do mulitple exposures. the f50 does not.
if you wear glasses, you can adjust the f100, not so the f50.
the f100 does come with a field of view preview, the f50 does not.

should i go on?

the f100 is a better camera.
where the f50 is going to limit you quite soon, the f100 will not.
i have my f100 for...hmm..i dnt know...13 years?
does not really look like this, it is build like a tank.
the f50 is not.

technically speaking, the f100 is a way better camera and therefore will be with you for a really long time.

as far as film goes...i shoot portra 400 alongside digital.
digital just does not look like it.
i scan those photos, and i do not mind, as the look of film justifies the use of it. period.

besides that, i enjoy it very much as it slows me down,..well not really, i know my stuff, but i do take the finger off the shutter
more often.

and that is a good thing.

people say film does makes you think.
which is a really stupid statement as far as i am concerned.
if you are only thinking about what youre doing when shooting film, youre a ... curses.

to shoot film and develop it yourself is simply more time consuming and therefore..do you want to waste your own time?
and yeah..there is a difference between half an hour of developing c40 including all steps to 2 minutes of fast browsing through digital photos.

and chemicals can be expensive too (e6...pheww...60 euros, 9 roll of 120film...)
still..shooting 600 rolls of black and white film on a nikon f100 with..lets say three fixed focal length lenses, still is cheaper than a new d4s.
do the math yourself..

so..it is about wasting your own life and your money and not about "thinking"
whoever writes this from here on, ows me a beer for every time this is written!
starting now!!

i could go on for hours.

check the technical aspects of those two cameras.
i would recomment the f100 over the f50, points listed.
in the long term, it is the better choice.

if you however are completely satisfied with the f50, and not want to invest more time and money in photography, i would agree with jose.
stick to the 50.

there will always be one more fance gadged you fancy, but actually do not need.
safe the money, buy some scotch instead.

cheers
