1.
my first dsrl was a canon eos 300.
my first really good dslr was a nikon f100.

i still use it, i love it and i would highly recomment it.
the photographic options it gives you are sheer endless,
the build quailty is great and the sound it makes when pressing the shutter is priceless.
also the feeling of that event is super too!
i love this camera. so this is not quite objective ;)

the only thing with the f100 though is the rubber ring around the batteryslot.
it does get lose.

its the rubber ring that is placed where you connect the grip, if you want.

if you get a used f100 make sure that this ring isnt lose.
open the battery apartment and check if it comes lose too.

also check the rubber. leather, whatever thing it is that they put around the camera.
near the shutter, where the plasitc comes back to the film back, it tends to get lose too.

check the viewfinder, if its dirty, scratched or whatever.
open the the back of the camera, set it to m and bulbb, hit the shutter and look for obvious, dirt, fungus or whatever.

a used f100 comes for around 200-300 euros in good condition and is worth every cent.

some people like it to be fully manual, in that case, there are the older f models, f2,f3 and f4 to consider.
if you want to have a more rugged body than the nikon f100, look for a f5.

my f5 got stolen, but when i stop playing pingpong with lenses, i will buy one back.
just because i miss it and am very nostalgic about it.

the f6 though has the same metering system as the nikon d3 and therefor is an even better camera.
it is still in production as far as i know and therefore more expensive.

all this in consideration, you cannot go wrong with a nikon f100!

 2.
i am not a native english speaker, i guess you know that by now.
what does being a colourful guy mean.

i guess i kind of understand it, but i want to know what it actually means.
thx in advance
cheers

 3.
hahaha...well..okay..point taken. but the lines are broken so you will have to pause.
idk..in my head this makes them stick longer in your active memory.
as you can clearly see, i am very skilled in writing peoms of all sorts.
besides that, i am a very good fighting-kangaroo-trainer and in my spare time
i build hulahoop rings out of concrete.
they are as solid, as my rhymes and peoms.

:)

 4.
hey lil

sorry to hear that you've got a hard time right now. that sucks.
its good you decided to do something you love.
here is the thing though..the way i see it..those groups are meaningless anyway.
you either search for a friend or somebody you work with.
combing those two things is..like almost impossible.

you first
screw the others

get up
go out
take images.

stand still for a moment, looka round you and think about what you are just doing.
how great it is.
you wanna share it?
show your work, try to do shows or what the hell, get it out there.
but mainly..you first.

do not depend on others.
they will invetiable let you down.

at least this is how i know it (some exceptions)

as far as i see it.
me first.
f the others.

do it!

edit:
i am aware that i am not to be considered the "social" type.
but that is good..more time to take more photos.
:)
keep smiling

 5.
@ john

yeah it does.
i did exactly the same here in vienna.
a city scape with vine in front of me going downhill towards vienna.
i did not edit it yet or browse through them.

what comes to mind instantly is, that the light is indeed very weird and one might wonder what it was.

i chose not to show the sun at all.

so looking at your image i would tend to not show the sun too.
but if it m,ust be on the frame. for whatever reason i feel like a littlebit more foreground would be cool.
one does get dragged into the image niceley, as the only path is right there in the middle.
however, it does get bright there and i feel like i am dragged towards the sun really soon.
to put this in balance i would have preferred to have a bit more ground that would keep me there a bit longer and thus making the weirdly lit landscape more important than the sun itself

it is a great photo and this is just my two cents.
and, most importantly, it does have rocks in it :)

 6.
fair enough!
that is a good point bebu! :)

i only get angry about gearheads because it always has this swing to it as it were an excuse and this drives me crazy

 7.
shun might think i only go to rock concerts.
well that is not so.
i go to museums too.
last sunday? saturday?

in this image you see all the different types of exhibition visitors. those who sit and read, those who talk and discuss and those who walk through with their hands on their backs. the only ones missing are those who come for the food and the selfie-stick hordes

nikon d3, iso around 2.5k, 24-70 2.8, -2.7EV

 8.
since last week i own a nikon d4s.
my walk around camera is my beat up d3..fancy that.

pick up a different camera.
you will notice it changes the way you take photos.
do this alot.
you will improve.
and sooner or later you will come to the point where you buy a holga.
for me..that point was after my first publication in national geographic.
i wanted a camera that is not...never..ever..doing exactly what i want.
something that surprises me and thereby changes the way i see things.

perfection is good and fine and something you should strife for.
in that respect, gear does matter.

but better gear will never ... E V E R ... make you a better photographer.
never...

get to the point where your current camera cannot do what you need.
invest in something.
but a good photo to me leaves you with a feeling, a sense of purpose, tells a story...a photo you will
remember the next day.

look at your favourites.
how many of those photos were taken with 10k euros of equipment?

for me, i know its just a few

gear
D O E S N O T
matter
!!

 10.
let's talk about star trek instead.

wouldn't you agree, dear jdm, that the new installments of the franchise lack the charm the older films?
i however find them more convincing as action scifi popcorn cinema as i would have said the older versions do.
one might argue this has to do with the time the films were made but i strongly disagree.
alien, the first film of the franchise, was also released in 1979, exact same year as the first star trek film.
alien wipes the floor with the first startrek in any aspect i can think of.

what comes to mind regarding the newer star trek installments is, that they
somehow lack the wisdom of their captains and are not that empathetic as the older ones were.

also cpt. krik kissed ohura during a time in which this was problematic.
(in case you dnt know: white guy kissing a black woman on television in the usa in the 1960s).

also women are equal to men in start trek.

so i would argue, or more or less add to my last comment rgarding the initial post from JDM, that start trek did have visions that were far more important than to invision the design of a laptop as we now know it.

to get even further away from micro 4 3rds and other things that do not matter:

should the next startrek movie have the moral and humanist approach of the old films or should it degrade further to plain stupid action?

discuss.

 11.
google
photography fails

gear
D O E S N O T
matter
!!
at all !

someone close this threat or i am dying of an heartattack ..

 13.
hey jdm

xerox developed the first ideas of a laptop in the late 1960's
the first working laptop was build in 1976, the xeorox notetaker
startrek was aired for the first time in 1966
startrek however did have portable computers
look at the ..let's call it healing-device of mccoy

so technically they did have portable computers, which is the definition of a laptop, a small portable computer.

i can remember that the first idea of a laptop was shown of as a model..i think it was build from cardboard or so..and that was before startrek, as far as i know, but ic annot remember the details..had been to long ..i am starting to forget things..(i am not that old..university..)

one more thing though,..
as this has turned into a wishlist forum post, as any nikon vs canon or whatever debate goes (thx shun ;) )
i will conrtibute to this wish list that i insist on nikon makeing the d5 a left handed camera!

finally...revenge will be ours !

 14.
i did not expect that to happen and i do not know what happened but i am guessing i was handleing lenses wrong.
a beginners mistake, i guess.
but it did freeze up..and that was not so funny.
i had been shooting in -20 to -30 degrees for quite some times already..yeah..i like snow :).. and only had a couple of problems.
this was one.

i think it is relevant as i do not know what might happen to the crystals in the EVF..what if they black out?

based on that, i would say big dslr as the current 1dx or d4s are unlikely to vanish anytime soon.

 15.
nikon d3
iso...dnt know...2k? 2.5k? 3.2k?
-2.7 ev

 16.
@ kent

i had my eos 1d mark 3 black out on the display after too long in heat..it was a pain to me too belive me that..it kept on taking photos, i just couldnt see them.
i also had some issues in extreme cold weather, ice in and on the viewfinder and weird distorted crytsals on the back of my screen, this did only happen once to my very beaten up d3.

i am not so sure but if my display can go black and distorted in heat or extreme cold i would say my electronic view finder can too..
i am not willing to test drive a mirrorless system as i wasted too much money over the last two years on breaking equipment anyway...it just ...doesnt feel right. should test it.
i have seen images taken in norway or iceland too..but i dont trust them as my d3 went mad after two days near tromso..

 17.
whata bout extreme cold conditiones and mirrorless?
any experiences there anyone?

 18.
woops..sorry!
i had been up almost all night and did not have enough coffee..sorry

 19.
as far as i know the mirrorless cameras work on contrast based autofocus not phase detection, so i am not interested.

digital viewfinder.
yuk

 20.
it is not the easter bunny holding a chocolate egg, but you get the idea :)

 21.
lithium batteries or rechargable batteries do almost deliver the power they should. with nimh rechargable batteries it usually is about 15% less of power than it is supposed to be.
maybe this is the reason why nikon says go for the lithium. there's a difference in pricing though.

i have no experience with digital cameras but i used to have a winder for my nikon f100 and i used niMH rechargable batteries and it worked fine.

i quit it as fast as i could because one does produce a lot of waste...

what matt wrote above made me smile and i think it is great fun.
6 vs 8 batteries..hmm..well..hope they somehow forget the last 0 in the prize of my camera to be, the d5 when i buy one in about a year or so......

mistakes of that sort are..well..i would consider them likeable :D

 22.
hey manuel, glad you enjoy your new lens!
keep shooting

cheers!

 23.
what now?

hmm.
so anyway...
is there a firmware update that would make me take better photos?
i'd love to get one of those!

 24.
as mentioned above, a scanner is a good thing. epson v500 or v750 are cheap and easy to use and a start. of course there are better products as the hasselblad immacon but this really depends on the amount of money and time you want to invest as scanning of film really is a science itself.

i use the v750.

do not let yourself be fooled by any dust removing algorithms and mechanics.
they do work quite nice because the scanner is using infrared light but sometimes it does mess things up.

do try to get a propper scanner, the epson v500 and v750 come with different masks for many different negative sizes.

get a good scan and use photoshop or lightroom to clean things up.
photoshop - healing brush - contant aware and stamp tools if needed.

you should be able to grab an epson perfection v500 from ebay for around 50-100 dollars.
it comes with a software that you can update from the homepage or even get it there.
unless you do not want to make highqualtiy fine art prints id say the epson v500 is a good thing to start.
i only got the 750 because i lucked out :p
keep an eye open for good deals.
do check if the masks that have glass and the glass of the scanner is scratch free.

 25.
metz 24, nikon sb-15, metz 34

does the new nikon sb-300 work?
i dont know.
