By the way, I should perhaps have mentioned this in the title, but this is a self-portrait. Hence, the collar, hands, etc., aren't quite perfectly placed.
  1. This is part of my 2nd model shoot in a studio setting. i do realize

post-hoc that i should have had the light a bit more towards the

camera to eliminate that one "bang shadow" on the right side of her face.

david - thanks for taking the time to offer comments. this was taken at 40mm on a 1.6x crop camera, so i would have hoped WA disortion wouldn't have come into play here. also, she does have a small head. i will remember your comments about the hair, framing, and limbs next time! thanks.

i should have not used the fan since it was a wimpy little thing. also, i will make sure the model always shows up with either no or pleasing nail polish. sorry about that folks!

mits - thanks for stopping by.

amar - i debated the crop at the top, but kinda liked the roundness of where the head sticks up. unfortunately, as you can see from the pic below, due to limited space, i couldn't get that much wider. i will look at B&W'ing the image. thank you for your comments!

    Self-portrait 2

          3

This is another in my series of self-portraits on tax day (i'm a

procrastinator). anyhow, this was against my grey projector screen.

should it be white or does grey work ok for this? also, i know this

picture isn't the sharpest, but i kinda like it a tad soft. thanks!

  2. becky, robert- you know, since this car show occurred at easter and i just got the negatives developed today, well, to be quite honest, i can't remember what kind of car this emblem was on. all i can say is that it was an old car! ;)

tuhin- would this have been better if the whole figure was sharply in focus? ik the 2 corners are empty, but i guessed that a diagonal layout would be best, but i couldn't exactly invent things on the hood to place on the corners. i do see what you are saying about emptiness - just not sure what to do to fill it. If it were a sideways profile shot, the folded arms wouldn't have come through.

becky - i thought i clicked critique only, but i guess i must have not checked the box. the title caption i had cut'n'paste from other pics of mine before there was a critique only option.

and heather - the amount of energy that you expended stopping by was way too much, undoubtedly, for your comment will certainly help me become a better photographer!

  3. This was a scan of an XP2 negative - my first time using b&w film. I

am not sure if i like this film or whether i prefer converting color

slides to b&w using the FM plugin. I shot this wide open to keep

basically the front of the figurine in focus, thus giving more of an

illusion of movement (perhaps). Your comments are welcomed.

forgot to mention, i really like the cool hues also. must have been in the evening or a very overcast day?

very unique tree, becky! how far did you have to hike to find this? only improvement i can see, and perhaps you were limited on where you could stand, is the the elimination of the foreground foliage on the left side. then again, eliminating the small tree in the back would be great too, leaving the subject framed perfectly against the countryside. but then, you would have altered "reality" a lot here, so let's just go back to whence we started and just say that this is an excellent scene!
  4. Becky, using the infrared action available at fredmiranda.com here is what you would get - i just left the default settings. i took out the rock on the far left b/c since it doesn't have any interesting light hitting it, it was just a dark blob.

  5. I like how the sand divides this into 2 water areas. did you use a circular polarizer here? i see you are slightly elevated due to the rocks on the left. too bad you couldn't get even higher up and almost look down on the sand - it would be a nice s-shaped feature which would be even more visually pleasing and odd since rarely does one (ok, i've never seen this) feature. seems like a fun and relaxing place!
