    Cinderella

I like the shot, but I don't like the title. The photo has real tension. A wreck. . a murder.. a rape, or maybe a prom shoe left behind on a back road. It has unanswered questions. But it doesn't work for me if the answer is 'Cinderella'.

Title aside, it's a very engaging and creative picture. I could see it more powerful in black and white. But maybe not.

  1. I really love this. The tones, the sharpness, and most importantly, the subject. I don't see the need for all the space above him, but there is likely to be a reason you cropped it this way. And it is your picture.

Meir, with the changes brought about by the ability to manipulate images digitally, photography has to a great degree become graphic design. Thus the emphasis is on the creativity of the designer. Also, I think the media has contributed. Imaginary worlds are created in tv shows and movies, as well as in advertising. We no longer want to see the world as it is or people as they are.
  2. I read somewhere that if a picture has the front eye in focus, viewers will not take much notice that the rear one isn't, or perhaps they won't care. I have that reaction to this. The girl is a delight, and she was captured naturally. I am not troubled by the short DOF. Could it be better? Sure - most pictures could. Is it a bad picture? Absolutely not.

    Thank you.

    Yeah, the resemblance is uncanny.

The local Hispanic community gathers on warm Sundays at the park adjoining one of TVA's hydroelectric dams to play and watch soccer and to enjoy the social aspects of a day at the park. I happened to be there early one Sunday, taking a stroll with my camera along the top of the dam. This couple was there with their camera, and I asked, partly with gestures, if they'd like me to take a picture of them with their camera. Afterwards, I took one of them with my camera. They were delightful.

That experience, and this picture, had a profound effect on me. I saw them as a young couple, clearly attached to each other, enjoying the early morning sun together in East Tennessee, in the USA. I could sense that they were hoping for a better life in my little world than would be the case where they had come from. I found myself wanting to see them succeed and build a future together right here. The immigration issue became very personal in that few moments we shared.

I know that immigration has its complexities. Issues are rarely as simple as we want to make them. But when I look at this picture, for me it becomes very simple. They are my neighbors, and they are welcome.

This is excellent photography, Meir, but a hard series for me to view. I feel overwhelming sorrow for her, and intense anger at him.

I know that this is a much more common scene than most would like to acknowledge. And I have an 18-year-old son. In addition to sorrow and anger, this series frightens me. Perhaps that's a good thing.
