  1. it may be time to have it lubricated? thats the most common problem. after all, its an old well used camera with many more reliable years left. would it be with your money to have it serviced? same camera of different age will have slightly different upgrades. sometimes the older model will have the better more durable parts. the company may have cut back on budget vs profits vs cost of materials or even availability. as the digital dawn was happening, many camera companies trying to stay afloat started using more plastics, stamped steel instead of machined brass, cheaper n cheaper as they were dropping like flys. war also dictated how things were manufactured. when were those cameras built? remember, competion had a big influance as well. no simple answers but im sure your rollies are still worth their weight in gold.
  2. to give you an idea of what the manufacturer recomends in the compour repair manual, go to tue lubrication section? now remember this is the strict method... Compur Shutter Repair Manual they use several types of grease n oils in one shutter. each one has a different viscosity n use, its not just sewing machine oil or watch oil... although diyers get away using these with some satisfaction. those are short term fixes n may not preform as expected in different temperature environments. so yes use the diy methods but sooner or later you will have to pay the band. like i said, diyers dont need or want longevity or perfection, they just want it for now and thats fine for a camera you resurected from the dump. diyers dont earn their bacon from their equipment.
  3. nice to hear you salvaged it using some creative juice. good save!
  4. the guy must have cross threaded the cell n forced it to seat. im sure the threads are striped. you should have refused to refund the money since he trashed a good lens.

  9. hi peter, i hope you will post your results? curious how well this phone giz works. good luck peter. btw dont be surprised when testing every camera you own n find so many variations in speeds? its normal to be off a slight bit.... usually about 25% is considered good (mechanical shutters). main thing is repeatability... consistancy.
  10. but on the plus side... when its working, it does a great job making our lives easy. enjoy your toys. im running my zoom tubes trax n my darkroom.... rc car in a tube.
  11. the manufactre process for films in general is magic in itself. polaroid was amazing technology.
  12. many diyers use the naptha bath method. it works temporarily but it forces old crud into other places. as tge naptha dries it leaves the old crud in an even worse state that just cakes up again. the correct method is disassembly.... but the diy methods will buy some time for those that cant afford a professional strip down or for cameras that arent worth the investment.... its understandable.
  13. you can buy oils n grease from microtools specificaly for shutters n camera repair in small quantities. they carry alot of camera repair stuff for diy hobbiests like yourself. joe, shutters do get oiled n greased. perhaps you have a limited experiance with the many varieties of shutters n cla procedures. using the correct oils n grease that dont out gas is why these oils exsist. regular oils will migrate into shutter blades and even react differently with certain metals.. so your warning is correct.. dont use motor oils or what some think are watch oils in a shutter. use only oils n greases designed for them. there is a wealth of repair information if you do the research. we once had dozens of camera repair sites on the internet with experianced repairmen posting excelent cla procedures for almost any shutter as well as repair manuals for almost any camera out there. you say you have never seen a shutter that benefited from lubes? try looking through the copal repair manual? they give very specific oils n grease schedules used in exact places in their shutters. yes some shutters do run dry but you've got to know which shutters you are dealing with first. do not use graphite in a shutter! never! if it turns, oil it. if it slips, grease it. if you arent sure, leave it!
  14. never never never use graphite in any shutter. the proper oils n grease as recomended by the manufacturer are the only way to go. many shutters do run dry but not all. the naptha wash may losen old lubes but that may force old diluted lube into places it doesnt belong such as the iris n shutter blades. if you do use naptha, use it very sparingly so it doesnt migrate into other mechanisms.
  15. why did you update; just because you can?... or it wasnt working properly with the older version software? btw does everything work in manual mode? the saying i live by..... if it doesnt itch, dont scratch. too bad hardware these days is so dependant on software.
  16. maybe im old fashion, i like the matted look.
  17. some people arent very handy n want ready to use, so $40 is reasonable. ive never needed the resistor but i am feeding into the MIC input of a sound card which has a preamp where line in doesnt. back in the day i built a wave capture gizmo for my techtronics duel trace i got out of popular electronics or maybe radio electronics magazine. tube n wire wrap p-p, it was the best thing since slice bread. but the digital age came with digital scopes n even recording programs for the computers. cant get any simpler with a jack into a phone. besides, your calumet speed checker would cost you about $40 on flea bay anyway.
  18. great subway n train shots! im inspired. ive gotta get a few of nyc prime meat jello containers at rush hour.
