1.
I would upgrade my 7D to the 7D II.
I bought my original 7D over 5.5 years ago and it still works perfectly well. I have zero investment in EF-S lenses, so that aspect doesn't (and never will) sway me either way.
If I "need" full frame I shoot 135 Ektar with the EOS 3.
I don't view the 5D III as an upgrade path at all to a 7D II. The 7D II is beyond the 5D III, IMNSHO.
Good luck on a tough decision; all are perfectly fine tools for photography.

 2.
I went with the poor man walking in and a near future, science fiction feel for this whole vibe.
I had a little fun with this. Reminds me of a short story I could write.

 3.
Thanks James, indeed does look easily like one of the coolest jobs in the world. Almost an unbelievable fantasy job.

 4.
And a bit larger one, self for scale:

 5.
Roy's Redwoods, a small grove nearby my neighborhood, first a smaller tree:

 6.
I am posting mine (late to the game) without having seen a single response yet -- I adjusted colors and tones and came up with this, somewhat film-noir, comic book but to me, appealing.

 8.
Prior Sunrise Foggy View -- when I saw this Tuesday morning I grabbed my camera/tripod from the office and walked up the hill a little to shoot it.

 9.
> I did own the 7D and it was a good camera but not a great camera. It was packed with useless features that one would never use and yes was rather weak when it came to battery life.

That doesn't make a lick of sense. None at all.
None of it. My own rebuttal is that having used my 7D for almost five hard years now I would doubt you ever even held one.

 10.
Were I you I'd send it to the Canon Service Ctr. in Irvine, CA. Many here, including me, have used them successfully for lens repair.
No one can say over the Internet that it is repairable or not. Only a hands-on technician can only assess its repairability and cost estimate.
