    Seriously Red

ah! i though it was backlit by something... anyway... now that i look it better there are also textures of rust and paint cracking... there is really a more lot to see in the image that just lines.

    hi carl..

the most intresting thing here is that the image is constructed only with lines... it is niche there is an intresting mix between straights and curves dividing the frame into 2 sections. on the other side it is quite obvious that these are KS letters and the must be mounted one something translucent... as seen from the light passing in the reversed Y letter... really a deep image to dig into, if someone is willing to spend time on it. Also the level of textures in the paint (or on the red surface) is intresting and create even more subtle straight and curved lines.... i guess this one is much better printed than seen on web. On the rating side: sit down on your most confortble armchair, take a deep breath, drink something if you like, and then... make a big loud laugh on the face of all those that don't even spend 1 minute time to *try* understand an image!

this is a nice idea PT, actually the crossing path is a texture (gross if we want but still a texture)... it really works very well in all, but i feel the image a bit "heavy", probably a little more air on one side to hint a fallen ball?

i like the idea very much... the diagonal line and the perspective made by tree shadow are very intresting... i like less the presence of red objects on the left of the image, i would crop them. like to see the human blurred figure, it adds a touch of humanity to a desolated place. Don't care about ratings on this one, the image is a bit too conceptual and "off-standards" for many... but of sure interest for those who like moody and decadent themes.

i don't get faces, animals, etc etc... but clouds works very well as textured pattern on the image... the plane is something that attracts the eye and gives the image a twist: being so much on the right it leaves the space to textures so the theme is fit, but having it still make the image something different from the classical textural shot.
  1. ohh that's nice PT... blurred testures... also i like the use of long exposure to capture motion on branches... very well seen... in my mind this image should be moore "deep" and "moody" (read... lower light higher contrast) or either B/W at all.
  2. nice txture pt... i like the blurred texture in background contrasting with the sharp texturing in close foreground.... the image works very well for me, but i guess there is a little of blur on the bottom right corner... maybe it is more out of DOF rather than blur... you could crop square to avoid the problem.

I like the image very much. The leaf is a classical texture subject, but this one is very nicely executed... i was guessing what the image source could be... scanned directly? shot over backlight opaline?... the background texture is something that could have been considered a minus, but actually we are on textured subject, so in fact, this is a plus to me.

Good Idea PT! Really. The thing i like most here is the non flat approach to the texture concept... generally one thinks about texture like a 2d image, instead here the rope connects 2 parts of the image creating a positively dynamic image.

a nice execution PT, the angled light works really well, there are plenty of delicate tones to play with except maybe a bit of whites... i don't like very much the leaf, yes it contains its own textures and these are very different from sand's but it is small it doesnt make any sensible counterpoint to the image in my mumble opinion... i guess much better would be a square crop and just sand textures, possibly a wb could work either.

well.. more on the spot than this! i like the concept PT, i like the blurred arrow. i guess a more tighter crop would make the image more abstract and let me focus only on spots... ok maybe i like cryptic images too much.
  3. i like the way you approach to street photography, this image renders beautifully the concept... you seem to hang around and wait for some clashing and - sometimes - humourous action to take place... a thing that i would like learn to do more.

the second keystone to your approach, to me, is to try many possible focal lenghts to describe subjects.. this is mostly evident in your architectural shots, expecially those where the human figure has to be included... sometimes you make humans part of the image, with important parts of the frame devoted to them, other times - like this image - we are small pieces that partially fill a void that architecture leaves us.

this is my first pick from your portfolio alexandre, i like the way you shoot architectural images and i like this one expecially becouse of the mixed use of color / textures / perspective. These 3 things together make the image stand... i like the way the shadow at bottom is creating a framing effect to the image.
  4. this is original as interpretation of the theme... a negative space may be a distance between people... tecnically i would like to see more air at top and both sides of the subjects, panoramic crop is ok though, a bit more of contrast would be advisable.

I like this one for the "glass" theme... it shows us many of glass caracteristics: it soften and diffuses light, it is transparent either, it doesn't keep water, glass can be used (with camera) to focus/defocus object, glass is an invisible (read: transparent) separation between an inside and an outside or vice-versa. the only thing it doesnt represent here is its inherent fragility. On the technical side is a very nice idea, i like the way we concentrate on the surface of the glass (focus on drops) and leave the outside blurred... i guess the left part of the frame is a bit too void, while the square crop would have made the diagonal drawn by the tree more evident.

Hi Ruud, i am making a nice exercise by going through your portfolio and trying to pick up 3 pictures "representative" of your style... this is my first pick, and the keystone it represent is graphical attitude. It is very evident in this image, and in many other, that you have the attitude to represent details more than the whole scene, and in doing so, it seems you predilige subjects that are - or may be assimilated - to 2-d graphical presentations. This is one example: it remains three dimensional while having an overall flat look. This could be a very good illustration.

the second keystone to your images, i guess, are strong perspectives... i have seen many street shots from you that present attitudes similar to this image, also mannequins are very well represented and i like the extremely dynamic approach to them. Perspective define your work, becouse you really use it extensively and generate very strong approach to subjects. In this image i particularly appreciate the use of the blu-yellows arrows - together with perspective - to frame the tatoo shop itself. Very clever.

3rd key of your work is the strong attitude towards vivid colors. Generally i noticed you mix up all your 3 attitudes to produce images: as a matter of fact this is either

    a) A detailed close up - detail - of a subjet, which tanks to the flat light it seems quite flat and graphic but......b) it is combined with strong prospectical approach, it gives great dynamism to the image and....c) colors are vivid and saturated, thanks also to a permissive light, so the image remains very pleasant to see in its context.

very nice idea PT, i like there are 2 different kind of textures here, the fluffy fur and the slik skin. the light effect on the heel and the middle part of the frame is really intresting, it makes the image pop in my eyes, and i like the odd cut, on the front part of the shoe, it is intresting and original.

    No Exit

since they are quite monochromatic, i guess that both work equally being color in little advantage becouse red catches eyes more easily... on the technical side i like the overall texturing on the image and the untextured bottom as lead in, i guess the whiteout above is too much and becomes distracting... on the other side having the image balanced toward darker tones could have been an improvement. Another possibility would have been crop the image so to unbalance it on the left and eliminate a little whites; look at the file attached: crop, brightness -18, contrast +4, saturation +8, unsharp mask 500/0,2/0... do you feel it is an improvement? other than that it could just be a matter of tastes.

  5. this is a beautiful effect and, probably, the most close to the proposed subject. I think it laks a bit of dark tones and, other than that, the image feels a little "void" on the left... apart these small glitches it is a beautiful representation of light in its true nature.
