I wanted to light this in as natural a way as possible. The light at

the back side of the camera is window light through the birch in my

front yard. The front lighting is flash bounced of a silver umbrella.

I had to alter the lighting behind the camera to even it out. Is

this alright? What could make it better? Are the reflections

distracting? What about the black band at the top? Thanks!

I thought this was interesting from my wife's garden, but it is

interesting to others? Is it sharp enough and is there enough DOF for

    a quality image?

a whole family perspective on what it takes to raise a child. both sets of hands and the baby alert. wonderful composition.
  1. Light under the chin would be good. I would have to use flash as this was a simple setup. No electronic lighting at all. All window light so I guess I could use a reflector for some fill under the chin. The background is simply the wall in my house. The wall is butter-colored. I thought about using a polarizer but opted not to as the reflections in my glasses was not a major distraction. There are so many other parts of the lighting and composing process i want to work on that the simplest detail was overlooked - Light beneath my chin. Thanks for the very useful critiques and suggestions.
  2. Thanks for whatever you can suggest that would improve this

self-portrait. Lighting is window light. Camera on tripod; no

filtration. Camera in B/W mode. Minimal post processing except

    cropping, sharpening and boosting contrast.

Karl and Aaron. Nothing like a bit of talk to help clarify one's own perspective. I am certain that I like the original as the intention was to have it somewhat somber. The brighter image may have more "pop" but loses something in the transition to brighter. I still will have gamma checked on my monitor, but I have too much pleasure in the shooting and less in the viewing of the images. Luke

Thanks for the suggestion, Aaron. It is that monitor gamma thing that seems to bug me. The calibration varies so much from one computer to another. Resized and changes made as you described.

What a wonderful graphic abstract of a flower and petals in particular. the hues add an interesting bit of information to the scenic repetition.

This feels like the best floral image I have made to date. Give me

your honest appraisal of the flower itself. I know many of you will

not approve of the crop or the framing. After all, why take a

semi-profile of a flower? My answer is simply, why not!
