Elegant, classy, perfection, and in my mind stunningly mature.
  2.
Playing with the white balance, either in-camera, or in Photoshop, can also make colors pop. As can creative exposure, shooting during the golden hours (early morning and late evening) or simply shooting very colorful and vivid scenes!

Exposure compensation?
Check the battery.
Don't know if this applies to the D1 or not, but some Nikon DSLRs allow you to set a constant adjustment to the exposure system so you can tailor every exposure to your shooting style, etc.
Clean the camera contacts.

  4.

We've been over this "crop factor" and related issues a lot.
A 50mm is a 50mm is a 50mm....
no matter what it is mounted on and how much it covers.
Otherwise lies confusion, if not exactly "madness"
SO
+ what the others said.

Amen brother!

  5.

13 replies, none of which addresses the OP's question, all of which are total BS! Is this a record?
In my view, "organic" is a rather pretentious synonym for "natural". The OP's bio page shows him holding a classic Rolleiflex, quite possibly fitted with a Planar lens. It is this kind of high-quality moderate-contrast single-coated lens which people may well be thinking of as giving organic/natural-looking results.

OK, so what does "natural" mean?

  6.
Turns everyone you shoot with it into a tree-hugging, tofu- & quinoa-eating greener!

  7.
Thanks Michael--absorbing, as are so many of your postings!

  8.
Nick, reflectors, flash and a change of exposure (higher ISO, larger aperture, or slower shutter) can help. The first two will help balance the light behind the subject, the last (exposure) will cause bright lights to be blown out.

  9.
I saw the ape, but the woman in the red skirt was topless, wasn't she? :)

  10.
Do you have exposure compensation on?
What exposure mode (spot/center/matrix) are you using? Do you get the same results in every mode?

This may shed some light on things (pun intended) : http://desmond-downs.blogspot.co.nz/2013/12/flash-nikon-ttl-bl-as-reliable-as-your.html

and this: http://www.scantips.com/lights/flashbasics.html

  11.
Cornell's Ornithology Lab has a site: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/search.aspx
or at their subscription site: http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna/
Or look for their 'Merlin' iPhone app at the app store .

  12.
JDM, that looks like a flea---you'd best get tested for the plague!

  13.
You say Nikon, I say Kneekon--different strokes for different folks.

  14.
Some terms never die:
We all still say "dial a phone" or "dial a number."
Even those of us who no longer wear a wrist watch, tap our wrists when inquiring about the time!
Every adult I know still says choo-choo when talking to little kids about a train!
Diesel drivers (of which I'm one) often use the term gas.
So yeah, CF card, rewind side, etc. are OK. :)

  15.
A couple of the Gitzo Explorer will do what you need.

  16.
Radio Shack and similar electronics stores carry commercial cleaners. CRC 101, 3M Novec Aerosol Cleaner, and Deoxit come to mind.

  17.
I see the same rounded view finder in this image: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond1x/images/allroundview.jpg

And it seems that you are missing the eyepiece.

  18.
Do the pictures also have the rounded edges? Or do you just see them through the viewfinder?

  19.
I used a 20 2.8 back in my film days. Loved it, but sold it when I switched to digital. It was eventually replaced by a 12-24 on a DX body that served me well (mostly landscape and a few wedding receptions). Now that I'm shooting FX I sold the 12-24 and am still pondering what to replace it with (My 24-120 will have to work in the meantime.)

  20.
I think your eye-piece shutter may be sticking. The lever to the left of the viewfinder-- move it a few times and make sure it is fully opened.

  21.
An FX lens on a DX body will not vignette. Something else is causing the left and right edge vignettes. Bad mounting flange? I'm assuming the 2 lenses you mention work fine on other cameras--which is why it must be something about the D1X.

  22.
I believe my D2X had this feature; the D100 and D70 didn't.

  23.
Never noticed this before--but Her Majesty has catch-lights!
