  1. Why not get 2 fast primes? Does Olympus have any? I would get a wide prime and a medium tele prime. That should be the same cost as a large ap zoom. That is what I would do. You are going to need faster lenses.
  2. I bought one this year for weddings. Like the last post (I think) I will use it for the church and reception to get everything in and probably for the dancing to give a different view. It is a specialty lens for sure. Just like an Electrician has many different screwdrivers, they are all screwdrivers but have different charachteristics, lenses are just tools too.
  3. Hi Paul,

I contacted my local papers PE. She asked if I shoot with a digital camera (back in 2000) I told here no I shoot film. In 2003 I got a 10D so I called her and told her I now shoot with digital. She did not have anything for me at the moment, I left her my name and cell number incase anything comes up and all her staffers are busy and I ended the phone call with "I am the guy who keeps trying" I made several more calls to her and always started with "Hi remember me I am the guy who keeps trying" and she immediately knew who I was and it (at least in my mind)made her equate sticktoituvieness with my name. The last time I called her, was when there was a tornado in NJ (very rare) I drove down my old street and there were toppled trees everywhere. A couple of kids were walking past an uprooted tree and I snapped there picture to give scale (the base of the tree with the roots were a good 7 feet tall) and I called the PE, she said that they have done the story already, but send some shots so she can see what I did. I emailed her the pics and she replied favorably and said she could definetly use me and to keep her abreast to what I am up to. I got to busy to call her back but sticking to it will get you there.

    Good luck

  4. I don't have an assistant but I work with 2 bodies at all times. my 1D MKII with a wide angle, 550ex and a 20D with a short tele and 550ex. near me would be the 70-200 for longer ranges, but not on me (too bulky) During the reception I use primes, a 24 1.4L on the 1D and either a 50 1.4 or 85 1.8 on the 20D, really have not needed anything longer so far for the receptions. In my bag are spare batteries, CF cards and any lens I can not carry on me. I have a black photo vest, but I don't like using it, it is to hot. I may go with a harness/ pack system, but I am a big guy so I need to be as small as possible to get through the crowds.
  5. I am sure there will be some available light (lamps, candles etc) put your camera on manual (set the aperature to f4 or 5.6 or 2.8 if you guarentee sharp focus and the shutter down to around 1/30th or less) this is called "dragging the shutter" Use the flash to illuminate the subject and by dragging the shutter you allow the ambient to burn in.

    Good luck.

  6. Cheryl,

I have some comments to make, I am not the leading source on art so take it for what it is worth.

I looked at your website- I found it hard to navigate and found alot of the images to be very soft. I would only show your best work.

I read that you're a Photography Major- I don't know what they teach you in college, but here is my $0.02 worth.

If you want to shoot families in a PJ style, then try to find families that you could do that for ,for free perhaps to build your portfolio. I have found that it is easier to get someone to buy into your idea if you have some examples. People sem to have no vision. They go to the store to buy a frame, like the picture in the frame and want something like that and then go to sears or walmart and get a crappy picture in front of a boring backdrop.

So the burden is on us to show people what can be done.

    Good luck.

  7. J Corley- I am not in that area, however I do accept jobs in that area and just wanted to give you a word of advice. Please tone it down. You asked a question, you got an answer. Just think about it this way, if somone from your area saw your post, do you think they would be inclined to call you? Loose the tude dude, it's all good!
  8. Hey Bob,

I looked at their website but the images of the book were to small for me to really see them, so I can't comment on them entirely. However, I use shutterfly.com to produce Engagement Signature Books for my clients. They just recently changed to a 12X12 book. You can do as many as 100 pages in them. You have the choice of a full page bleed all the way down to something like up to 12 images per page. Probably the best way would be to design your pages in photoshop and sixe them 12x12 and do all one image/per page bleeds. You can have your text printed on the front, back and spline and have your image on front-wrapped around to the back.

    might be a good alternative.

  9. Thanks again everyone. I cleaned the sensor today on the 1D MKII and although it has a few stubborn specs, it is much better (after 4 times cleaning it today) Other than that the camera works flawlesly, so Thanks again for the great responses!
  10. Yeah That I was feeling, and the reason for the question. My 1DMKII is pathetically dirty (I have cleaned several times but it is just dirty) and my 20D does sometimes come up with an error which freezes the camera up. I turn it off/on and it fixes but it is annoying. Ironically my 10D has been flawless since 2003, except that the vert shutt doesn't work for some reason anymore.

The flash units get freeky sometimes, but it might be more from the batteries.

    Thanks for the responces.

    Rob
