Hello everyone. Here is the 1st of the negs from wondering about the Western Classic & SOVREN Vintage Racing event at Pacific Raceway in Kent, Wa. during the July 4th holiday weekend. Saturday was spent with Brad Cloven, so the two of us should be able to keep this, and other, threads "alive" for a bit. Enjoy, Bill K1000 & assorted lenses, Vito II & Yashicamat 124 used, all with UFX400 @ 250 asa. Obsidian Aqua & V8000 scans.

00e2DG-564111684.jpg.a98bc72cbda07a49bba02ccbcc5507d8.jpg

Hello all. My take on the same subject. In SOVREN, and most other racing organizations, all cars must have a driver removable steering wheel. Safety feature that enables driver to bail out quickly or rescue crews to get driver out of car.
Even the humble Volkswagen Beatle has a place of honor in racing. In the early 1960's a rugged, inexpensive (relatively that is) car developed from the then 1300cc Beatle seen running about America. Called Formula Vee, the class caught on here and in Europe and enjoyed a sizable class following well thru the 1990's. Stock 1300cc engine and VW suspension only.
Interesting, Bill. It's all about power to weight ratio. When I was a teenager a popular use for Volkswagen Beetle chassis was to convert to a dune buggy (not a lot of use around here, but fun). A popular performance boost for the Beetle was to replace its air-cooled flat four with the more powerful air-cooled flat six from the Chevy Corvair.

Hello again. Sensing that racing would be good for the bottom line, Volkswagen started sponsoring an "advanced" class using first the 1600cc air cooled engines that had been introduced to their line up, but with a more advanced chassis. It was named "Formula Super Vee", with FSV markings on the body panels for id. Tinkering from 1970 onward soon had the liquid cooled Rabbit engine powering both European and American classes, amateur and semi-pro, into 1990, Picture here is the apex machine development.
Don, VW introduced 1600 cc air cooled engines around 1966 for the Beatle and for the Vans when the "new style" was introduced in 1968. I purchased the newer style as soon as the dealer had one and keep it going to 1989. Typical ac engine....needed valves around 30k miles almost religiously! The Golf/Rabbit was jointly developed around the time VW merged with Audi.. early 80s?
I want everyone to know that upon introduction to SOVREN, Brad was off and running...doing his Leica and Rolli thing....as proved here, sprawling to new lows just for a picture ! Such passion! Bill

00e2pQ-564246484.jpg.fd066734d57d6db46654824700e698bd.jpg
