Philosophy forum on life support...

Barry, definitely no need to apologise, I was just curious about the result (I should have tagged my question OT). The UK is constantly debating electoral reform especially when one minority party does better than expected. I’m sure it’s the same in the USA

"You should definitely limit your words to pictures.

Much as you have limited your reading to picture books". moving in on.

LOL....I like the idea of pictures turning into words with their own special language...to help" moving on" with those big words; we who take pictures call them photographs.

"Allen, you have crossed a line once again where you previously described your own behavior as "rude and out of order." I'll not honor your behavior with further attention nor responses, and I recommend likewise to others" David

Just rattling a few cages, David, I just like to see what is inside. I'm sure they have not taken too much offence. I have not used offence language, or, hate talk... like I said just rattled a few cages.

Hopefully we can escape from politics and move on no pun intended. The problem with this forum is since Julie left no one is posting. I suggested Phil to start the ball rolling with his knowledge, ability, and insights. No I'm not being condescending.

Wow! I have not been directly down here in a while through the forum directory. Usually, I hit the "New Posts" link and get a gestalt view of all of the activity across boards.

Perhaps we have run out of things to discuss? Maybe we are tired of discussing the same things over and over again. Maybe the people who liked dwelling in this board have drifted away as the site has "improved"!

What's your take--or for that matter the level of interaction across the boards on PN?

Perhaps things are finally stabilizing a bit for our community. It's unclear right now who actually owns "us" but it appears that it might be CreativeLive. See this thread here:

Who owns & runs PN anyway?

What, if anything--do you think that we need to do to kick a bit more life into this historic old horse? Sad to think that it is becoming just another PhotoBucket clone... :(

The philosophy forum scares me, I'm just not that good of a writer...

I think the drifting away from the philosophy forum had more to do with the content of it.

Going back as far as I remember, the philosophy forum rarely had threads that addressed philosophical issues.

Philosophy is an esoteric discipline, often not attracting a mass or popular audience. It would be hard to sustain on a site like this which tends to eschew the kind of depth and substance Philosophy requires in favor of its current move toward more social networking, camera and technical discussion, and a lot of more picture postcard imagery, notwithstanding some recent good discussions on Robert Frank, etc. which could easily have gone into the Philosophy forum with a slight twist of emphasis in the OP.

Participation in the Philosophy forum dwindled in proportion with the dwindling participation in the rest of the site, though it was probably always a less attended forum than a lot of others.

Universities often have a hard time drawing students into Philosophy classes.

Philosophy is hard, often has its own unique language and deals with the kinds of questions the average person often simply does not want to seriously take up. That's part of its beauty and draw to me.

There was plenty of philosophical content in the Philosophy forum. Michael is mis-remembering. It was, however, not classical or strict Philosophy. It was Philosophy of PHOTOGRAPHY. Plato would come up but, appropriately, not often.

One can't just blame the ethereal unit, "the philosophy forum" for its dwindling participation. If the content was not appealing, it was up to members who cared to put forward content themselves that would have been of more interest. Monday morning quarterbacking the demise of a forum is easy. It would have taken more time and effort to, at the time, ask pertinent questions and stimulate pertinent discussion.

There’s always something new under the sun.

Gary, your response to my post is well put. Sometimes shooting from the hip gets a gunslinger dead.
