Mary Doo
PixelGenius, creators of the PhotoKit line of Photoshop plug-ins, is closing down. They are giving away their software. I have used their [one-click] PK Sharpener tool for years (and I will refuse to use any other). Please download the tool bundle when you can. You will be happy. http://www.pixelgenius.com/
Glenn McCreery
Great find, Mary. When I went to download the software, I noticed that one of the developers was Jeff Schewe, which prompted me to start re-reading his book "The Digital Negative", especially the sections on sharpening. The book should provide some insight into the techniques used in PK Sharpener. PK Sharpener should be much easier to employ than Schewe's description in his book of blending edge-frequency sharpened layers in Photoshop. Bruce Fraser designed the sharpening plug-in for PK Sharpener, according to Schewe.
digitaldog
Yes, Jeff's book will give you a clue as to the techniques as after all, EVERYTHING all PhotoKit products do, is 100% Photoshop using just it's toolset. What is real work, massive work, is knowing what settings to insert into the controls to get the results PK does. Bruce Fraser did enormous testing on actual output from differing devices to come up with just the output sharpening routines (Mac Holbert did more later on after Bruce passed and Mac took over as product manager). PK Color is all work Martin Evening came up with etc. Edited January 23, 2018 by digitaldog 1 Author “Color Management for Photographers" & "Photoshop CC Color Management" (pluralsight.com)

Mary Doo
Think Lightroom uses the same Pk sharpening technology. (?)
digitaldog
Pixel Genius licensed limited capture and output sharpening to Adobe for LR years ago! NO creative sharpening, no sharpening for output to contone or halftone output (only ink jet and to screen and more limited in options than PhotoKit Sharpener). 1 Author “Color Management for Photographers" & "Photoshop CC Color Management" (pluralsight.com)

michaellinder
By the way, Mary, even though I successfully downloaded the software to my iMac, it wasn't recognized when I tried to install it as a set of plugins.

Glenn McCreery
When I installed the software, I needed to go to Photoshop preferences - plugins , and then choose the additional plugin folder (PG toolbox plugin module). It was then installed after quitting and then restarting Photoshop.
Mary Doo
By the way, Mary, even though I successfully downloaded the software to my iMac, it wasn't recognized when I tried to install it as a set of plugins. Is it working now? I am not a Mac person, and here's the direction from the "READ_ME_MAC.PDF" that's included within the Mac zip file. Good luck - let us know! :) "To install on Mac, quit Photoshop and copy the folder named ‘PG Toolbox Plug-in Module’ with all of it’s contents to Photoshop’s Plug-ins folder found in this directory path: Applications/Adobe Photoshop/Plug-ins After relaunching Photoshop, open an RGB image and go to the File/Automate menu where you’ll find the PhotoKit plug-ins bundle as shown below ..." Glenn McCreery
Thanks Mary. My comment above was an additional step that I needed to perform after following the directions from "READ_ME_MAC.PDF" that you quote. Initially, without performing the additional step, my null result was the same as Michael's. Now, the plugins all work fine. I use Photoshop CS5, so, perhaps, the additional step is not needed for more recent versions of Photoshop?
Mary Doo
I use Photoshop CC for Windows. There is no additional step needed after following the direction to place the folder where it says it should be.
JeffOwen
Does this set of Plugins work with CS2? I successfully downloaded the 64bit PC version into my W10 PC. Put the folder into Plug-Ins folder OK and restarted Photoshop but could not find the link in the Automate window. I went to Photoshop preferences and added the Pixel Genius Toolbox to the 'Additional Plug-Ins' box, restarted Photoshop and still the link did not show in the Automate window. The attached screen shots show the Plug-ins preferences window (below) and the the Automate window (above) having restarted Photoshop.
JeffOwen
OK, so although my PC is a W10 64bit my CS2 Photoshop version seems to be only 32bits!? I loaded the 'Pixel Toolbox' version 32bit into the Plug-Ins, restarted Photoshop and got the correct window in 'Automate'. However when I tried it out all I got was a window saying my version of Photoshop is not supported!? Can anyone help?

Why not uninstall, reboot, reinstall, reboot... and see what happens. If all else fails, then I am not sure if PixelGenius support would respond. I think they should. Good luck!
