  1. Some recent adventures with a newly restored Contax III. I sent it to Ukraine to have it done. Initially, after getting it back and shooting the first roll, I discovered that there was a problem with the shutter and about 40% of the shots had a dark band at the top. You can see this below in the b&w landscape and if you look carefully, at the top of the clothesline photo. The technician sent me a video of how to tighten the shutter and a second Flickr friend helped me make the adjustment via Skype. The shutter now works perfectly at all speeds from 1/1250 down to 1/25, as slow as I tested. The colour shots were made after the adjustment. The light meter also works quite well and I used it on all the shots. I discovered though, after using it on the b&w roll, that it overexposes by I stop. Not bad for an 80-year old sensor. I corrected for this on the second Kodak ColorPlus 200 roll, by exposing at ISO 400 (27 din). All b&w shots with a c. zeiss jena sonnar 5cm 1:2 collapsible. The colour shots with a Jupiter 12 except for the palm, which was taken again with the Sonnar.
  2. Two shots in Lisbon. Leica IIIf, Ilford Delta 100 @ 80, PMK 1:2:100 10" 24º: The first, I think, is with a Summaron 3.5cm 1:3.5 and the second with a Summicron 5cm 1:2.
  3. Contax IIa, Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 5cm 1:2 collapsible, Ilford Delta 100 @ 80, PMK 1:2:100 10' 24ºC.
  4. First use of PMK Pyro with the kind help of Rick, who answered all my questions with Buddha-like patience. Thanks! A couple of things weren't ideal: firstly, I shot Tri-X 400 @ 400, whereas it it should have been exposed at ISO 200 for PMK (i hadn't realised my D-76 had run out) and secondly I think I made a mistake when pipetting solution B of the developer. But some reasonable results. All taken with a Nikon F2. The lenses and notes in order: an 8 multi-exposure with a Micro-Nikkor 55mm 1:2.8, Nikkor-N.C. Auto 24mm 1:2.8, same, same, Nikkor-S Auto 50mm 1:1.4 - 12 exposures over 3 frames with red, green and blue filters, 24mm 1:2.8, 50mm 1:1.4.
  5. Well, not this weekend, but a weekend coming soon, a Contax III. I bought the camera in a non-working state for less than US$30 a year ago. Couldn't find anyone who would fix it completely here in Brazil (i wanted the light meter to work) so I sent it to technician in the Ukraine on the recommendation of a friend on Flickr. It's on its way back to me by post. I decided to replace the shutter curtains and he also replaced the coil in the light meter. There had been the addition of a flash sync in the past which was apparently for magnesium type flashes, that was updated too. The technician made a video and anyone interested in camera repair/Contax cameras might find it interesting. He speaks in Russian, but Youtube does automatic captioning and you can do a translation in the language of your choice. It doesn't always make a lot of sense of course! Here's the video:
  6. Thanks for this. Do you leave for a full day? I imagine I'll need to avoid anything over 28 degrees C, so I could do this in the morning. Is also followed Sandy's advice and found that some people use fingernail polish drying devices with UV leds
  7. Usually this time of year it's below 30 or 20% at the hottest part of day and sometimes below 10. Here's the post about 8: Distrito Federal bate recorde histórico de dia mais seco
  8. Thanks Dave and Julio. This part of the country is quite dry and this week it actually got down to 8% relative humidity, a record. Perhaps there is a defect there though that's acting as a focal point for fungus to take hold. It's being returned to me this week. Perhaps there's not much I can do...
  9. I think I caused the problem by accidentally loading large files on my first post. I reported my post and asked for it to be removed but it's still there. Sorry. I think though the site admin should reinstate an upload limit as it no longer seems to exist
  10. Hello, I have a Zeiss Sonnar lens which I had restored from a very poor starting condition to a point where it takes excellent images. The problem with it is that there is a patch of mould that has reappeared twice in twelve months. The technician has removed it without charge on both occasions but i wonder if there's anything i can do to prevent it returning beyond good storage practices. The tech mentioned putting it in the sun but warned against it getting it hot. I think he was suggesting an air conditioned room with sun coming in from a window. That's a bit inconvenient for me, but I wonder if a dentist's instrument box with UV light might help. Might this work? I know a couple of dentists! In the photo below, you can see the fungus at the very centre of the lens, inside, I believe, the frontal element. Any suggestions most welcome. Thanks, PS. it was a different technician that butchered that frontal ring on the lens!
  11. Gosh, yes, they certainly are. I think I'd looked on my phone before and this photo didn't load. Thanks!
  12. Thanks. I use the Massive Dev Chart times. It only lists "Tri-X 400" and not "400TX". So far, the times have always worked well for me
  13. Some black and whites from the same roll of Tri-X and using a more gentle agitation in development as recommended by Rick. 1st and last photo with Nikkor-S Auto 50mm 1:1.4 and the middle photo with a Micro-Nikkor 55mm 1:2.8 Ais. Last shot with yellow filter:
  14. Hello, I have about 120ml of Kodak D76 remaining while I wait for a new developer on back order to arrive. My tank requires a minimum of 290ml to develop a single roll. I dilute 1:1 and for a roll of Tri-X 400, I run the development for 9'45" (9.75') at 20ºC. A 1:1 solution from 120ml is 240ml and is short by 50ml to develop a single roll. If I add another 50ml of water to make a solution of 290ml I will have diluted the 1:1 solution by 17%. Do I then increment the development time by this factor? ie. Should i develop for 9.75 + 1.66 = 11.41 minutes? Thanks!
  15. Sorry for posting such large images above, they are slowing down this thread. It was a mistake. I've asked for the post to be removed.
  16. Have been doing some experiments making colour images from filtered monochrome (red, green and blue filters) in Gimp. The 1st photo was taken on a tripod. A powered paraglider appeared on the green filter shot. The second is a hand held version from the same position. The third is a simulation of a triple exposure on each filter (colour separated layers duplicated twice in Gimp and rotated and displaced a little). The 4th image was taken on a tripod with a slight breeze shifting the hanging leaves. And lastly an 8-exposure handheld frame. Nikon F2 Photomic, Nikkor-S Auto 50mm 1:1.4, Kodak Tri-X 400, Kodak D-76 1:1:
  17. Thanks very much Rick. Mundane is not a word that I would ever associate with you images! Always wonderful and crisp results no matter the location, subject, camera or lens. Nice to see what looks like a Holden emblem on that GM car!
  18. Some photos taken at the Hotel Brasília Palace in Brasilia. One of the oldest buildings in the city and designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The two chairs are by Sérgio Rodrigues. I don't know who did the lamps, but could even be Niemeyer, he was an excellent furniture designer as well as an architect. Leica IIIf, Summicron 5cm 1:2 collapsible, Ilford Delta 100, Kodak D-76 1:1:
  19. Yes, exactly. It was on the upper side(?) of the gate I think. Could only see it from the front with the back on and with the shutter open on bulb
  20. I beg your pardon everyone, please ignore. I found it and I think I've removed it. Needed to use a magnifying glass....
