  1. I am not sure what gave it away, but as soon as I saw the thumbnail I thought this looked like Germany. Lovely shot - my favourite is the kid on the stone ;-)

Also, taken with a Leica in Wetzlar - how appropriate. The village I come from is only about 20km from there.

  2. Wonderful diagonal composition and great use of DOF to highlight the main subject. It tells the whole story of the game with the guy in the front hesitating and the guy in the background getting bored with him - probably just about to make a wisecrack to hurry him up. I love card games ;-)

This is a masterpiece, which I wouldn't have been surprised to find in the portfolios of Ian McEachern or Chris Battey, who are my two favorite photographers on this site.

Just one possible nitpick - it appears that you might have selectively sharpened the cards. If so, I think you slightly overdid a good thing. If not, please accept my apologies in advance ;-)

  3. Gorgeous lighting and very well composed. I immediately hated the lamp, but Isidor beat me in suggesting to remove it. I also think that your intuition to include some space on the left of the tree when you took the photo was right. I love the way there is just a hint of blue in the sky, ie not blown out.

    'Yellow Leaves'

What makes this photo for me is the blue gradient background. To contine the previous discussion, for me this background elevates the photo above just 'good'. The diagonal composition works well, as does the three on the left. I would possibly like a little less tree, but then you would have to cut part of that leaf off, and that wouldn't be a good idea. If this was a studio shot, I would suggest more backlighting through the fern leaves or simply using more transparent leaves, but since this is a nature shot, this is beyond the control of the photographer.

What a shot - I think I have to get myself a 'didymium filter' - whatever that is - because Greg's picture looks more like I have seen this spot many times. I wasn't there on the same day with you guys though ;-)
  4. Great shot of this waterfall. As far as I know, there is no time of the day when the sunlight actually hits the waterfalls or any leafs that would be lying around it. That's why pictures of this fall often look grey and murky - I have plenty of those. Walter has overcome this problem perfectly by including the sunlit rocks in the foreground and the sunlit forest in the background. Trust me, you won't find a better perspective to capture this fall!

What Ben said, and the sky serves to balance out all the road in the bottom left corner of the frame. Beautiful picture!
  5. Excellent lighting, great model and an unusual pose. I keep looking at this shot. The crumpled top doesn't bother me, but the crop at the right seems sub-optimal. I don't like the way the hand is cut and there are a couple of blown out areas that you could easily get rid off.

    NYC Chinatown

I like street pictures like this a lot. Most people try to isolate a single scene but I believe showing a busy street like this and giving the viewer a choice what to zoom in on is a viable alternative. Here the people in the background are the most likely centres of interest, because they are the only ones looking in our direction, especially the two guys on the right. Unfortunately they are not sharp.

It's a nice shot and congratulations to Volker on the POW.

I just happened to come across this shot yesterday, and it tells the same story - just much better. The dolphin and the person actually seem to have eye contact in this picture, so there is a real connection, which is missing in Volkers shot where they just happen to be in the same room.

Very nice compositon, and the slow shutter speed has worked well. IMHO there is just a little too much flash - too obvious. A darker picture might have had more character.

This is awesome! Great lighting and the background is nicely blurred. Your lens has obviously a very nice bokeh. Beautiful composition too. How many shots did you have to take to get such a winner?!
  6. Lovely! I am a sucker for reflection shots. The house you cut in half on the right disturbs the pieceful atmosphere a litte. Maybe crop enough to get rid of the light front wall - it wouldn't be much.

Superb shot, although maybe a notch too light. It makes me freeze just by looking at it. Forget about the birds though. I only saw them after reading your title and well after I thought 'what a great shot'. No need to clone them out though - just don't mention them. Nobody will notice them anyhow ;-)
