I like the blue gradient background. I like the dark tree trunk on the left. I like the colors and the diagonal flow across the frame. That was the good news ................ (-;

It is a good, pleasant image Len. Speaking for myself, I could possibly fill a Volkswagon with my 'good' shots. They lack that certain something special that would make them excellent shots. Whether it be originality, the light, decisive moment or the such. (Sometimes I go thru a roll or 2 to get one excellent shot). To me, what you have here Len is a Good image. Some images capture the scene as well as they can be caught. You have come close to it here. Hence I have no sure suggestions to make it better. Hope that made some sense.

Ken, Why do I feel like I've just escaped the hangman? :) I took this one while putting in time waiting for the mist to burn off Tea Lake. The white areas at the top was all that was visible beyond about 30 feet & I thought I may as well see what this 800 speed film was capable of. I'm pleased! Yes, 1 excellent (in my opinion) shot per 2 or 3 rolls is about par for the course. My acceptable exposure & sharpness rate is about 95% (thanks to nearly always using a tripod & in-camera meters) but excellence in content & composition is another matter. I took about 3 rolls of film that day & will only print (8 x 12) about 2 or 3, this one, perhaps, included. Best, LM.

For me, his one is better than a "Good" photo. I'd definitely print it as 8X10. I can certainly relate to your and Ken's comments on the excellent shot. I have burned measureless gasoline and put nearly 50,000 km on my little car in one year trying to get one! Greg

Ladies & Gents, Comments are where it's at so let's hear your

opinions. Doesn't matter if you like it or not but I am interested

in your experiences with similar subject matter. Suggestions on how

I could do better next time will be greatly appreciated. The

destination will probably never be reached but the journey's a

blast. Best, LM.

What makes this photo for me is the blue gradient background. To contine the previous discussion, for me this background elevates the photo above just 'good'. The diagonal composition works well, as does the three on the left. I would possibly like a little less tree, but then you would have to cut part of that leaf off, and that wouldn't be a good idea. If this was a studio shot, I would suggest more backlighting through the fern leaves or simply using more transparent leaves, but since this is a nature shot, this is beyond the control of the photographer.
