No need for another camera if this one can take photos like this ;-)

A very nice abstract - love the textures, patterns, and especially the warm light!

Absolutely love it! I agree with others on the surreal feel of the image, and it's ability to evoke emotions. That's very high praise for an image, and this POW deserves it.

Although Agnes' picture is certainly in a different class, it also reminds me of one of my own mediocre attempts to capture that kind of scene - of course among other things I was lacking the model ;-)

  1. "i am also perplexed that a 50-500mm lens would get any sort of award. that's sort of like giving a sports equipment prize to something meant to serve (at 20% effectiveness) as both a tennis racket and hockey stick. great fun for your 5 year-old kids, but not..."

If somebody won eg Wimbledon using this device and/or the hockey world championship, I believe an award would be well deserved - for both the device and the user - who is the one who actually received the award here.

Personally I think this was the most informative POW discussion in a long time, because I learned about a type of photography I had been unfamiliar with. Both the goal to capture wild birds in a way that resembles a studio shot, and the hightech, hands-on way to tranlate this into reality appear pretty unique to me, and seem different from the way most people approach bird photography. But then I am not an expert in bird photography in general, so I might be wrong.

  2. Alejandro - many thanks for the comment. These are my fish in a little 29G aquarium. They are called Bolivian Rams (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus), and the parents are only 3.5" long. The one in the front is daddy ;-)

I've also posted an enlargement from the shot above, which shows two of the little ones. They are the two just left of the light rock in the bottom right of the frame.

What's interesting is the relationship between the girl and the snake. Looks to me like she just released it from her bag of magic tricks in order to dazzle the photographer, and so she's standing there pleased with herself (the hand says everything).

Yes, that's exactly the story that brings the elements of this picture together. Even the dramatic sky fits and the ramshackle house!

I liked the picture as soon as I saw it, but the obvious story comprised of the elements 'snake' and 'little girl' would be: snake crawling towards little girl, little girl is scared and screams. That's not the case here, the sake is crawling away, and the little girl has a winning smile on her face. Thanks, Dino, for bringing this together for me. Of course the reality of this little girl in a 'third world' country might be grim, but still, the picture looks enchanted - maybe because to somebody in the 'first world' the scene is so surreal?

    Queenstown, NZ

Taken from an airliner on a flight from Australia to New Zealand.

The town in the middle of all those mountains is Queenstown on the

    shore of Lake Wakatipu.

    All comments and suggestions appreciated!

  3. If you crop the shot so that only the church towers and the mountain tops are left it looks like some cutesy village in the Alps in Europe. Include the apartment and the more grimey scene in the forground helps to portray the dynamics of Sitka - at least that's what I imagine, because I have never been to Alaska. So if you want to go for the postcard shot, please go ahead and crop. Personally, I prefer your original version.
