  1. James Bryant - indeed I also still shoot slides Projecting gives incredible joy to all and the best way to appreciate them Scanning is quite a problem sometimes, but nowadays you can use Nikon ES-1 (or similar) to re-shoot them and the results are better Hope that Nikon will release soon the new one - ES-2, which is still not on the market My major concern is developing, as already for 10 years the machines here are dead and they do it with jobo's and the results are not very consistent But maybe he best feeling is that you make something completed, final, incredibly looking, and etc.... and it also brings me the feeling of a document - something that recently is quite disgraced of the today's photography As for Ektachrome - my favourite was the VS one, but let's wee what Kodak will bring back
  2. ok, here is what I am talking about - D850 Color Test - Google Drive all are direct JPEGs, with different picture profiles - first from up left is in Standard, than Portrait, than I changed WB as I thought was wrong - it was on daylight, I put it on clouds, than auto and than changed picture profile again - I don't remember exactly - I think I tried Neutral and maybe again Portrait - maybe you can check it in the psd file the V picture is created afterwards from the first NEF - using the Flat profile and a tiny corrections, so that it was close to what I saw in reality of course NEF is giving you the opportunity to correct all colours but I think than in many situations you really need good colors - for example - when you make HDRs, or videos - they also apply for video also after the D4 they announced that the direct JPEG is improved and I think this is the correct way to be, as in many shootings I prefer the camera to do it's job and not to have me working hours to pre-compress all data - I mean general shootings, not special sessions when you do a lot of post processing afterwards on a single file I didn't have time to try other custom profiles - as there is a web site with many, I use one specifically on my D90, and also I have to note that I reset all profiles, as I thought after this test they might be altered - they weren't thanks for the information that on the upper LCD iso and counter could be switched
  3. and what do you think about the colours? this is the major change which I really really dislike... only the 'neutral' profile is useful for me... all the others are quite harsh...
  4. as I said - I am not really into the black and white I rarely shoot, once I was very fond of the first Kodak that was for C41 - it was really good, the next generation was awful Than I tried some others and I finally was impressed of the Acros, it is really good film and will be bad to lose it But of corse it depends of quite many things and I admit it is maybe not the best option, if there is 'best' at all - always depends what you need by the way - yesterday I found out that there is even 20 ASA black and white film - Adox
  5. scott_eaton - maybe you are right... I am not so much in the black&white, I use Acros for several years and what I liked so much is the contrast, the sharpness and the very thin and transparent film beneath... from Ilford I have tried the 50 and the one for C41 and I wasn't impressed... Tmax 100 I also tried once, because it was the only one I found and I think is also very good... but if you say FP4 is better I will have to try it... either way maybe we won't have any choice anyway... but still Acros is very very good film and the reciprocity is great indeed
  6. Recently I was able to make some shots with the new D850 and I was quite puzzled with some changes Nikon made... First they switched places of the MODE and ISO buttons which... is not so big deal But why they put the ISO setting on the place where it was the counter left - on the upper LCD menu? when you switch it OFF it shows the counter - when ON you see what ISO you are on... ?! ridiculous to me... even from the film bodies at the right there was the counter??? All the time... Also they removed the RECENT menu which was very useful when you have to switch some settings all the time (like color profiles etc) And actually this is the worst thing I saw in D850 - the colours are awful!... so pushed up - I couldn't believe... I made some test I could link lately What do you think? Otherwise the resolution is great, the touch screen - not very handy, but nice to enlarge and view the photo, to go through the menu is useless for me
  7. let's hope they will find a way to keep them... even if they start the line once a year... if there is no great demand... who knows P.S. I am still waiting for the reborn of Ektachrome
  8. BH already stopped it... sad... I wonder if they are going to reborn it after some time, like Kodak with ektachrome, although they still didn't release anything... film is shrinking more and more... :(:confused:o_O
  9. so sad... across was my favourite film recently... :( Japan's Fujifilm to end sales of black-and-white photo film due to falling demand | The Japan Times
  10. I am considering buying this set for quite a long time... in addition to my SB700 - it could make a great mini studio set but I am also wondering if I could get them work with my old little film body F55? As far as I read the SU commander would not sync, the SB700 also doesn't work with film bodies, I was thinking for SB600, but I saw it works only as a separate light, only SB800 could be a commander? what do you think? any ideas?
  11. At 1:1, a DX camera would only copy the center 2/3rds of the frame. if you use FX lens… the 40mm micro is DX lens… for DX bodies… NO PROBLEM with it… f you want to use other brands - like Sony, Olympus and etc, of course you have to take in mind the different ratio of the sensor This makes it easy to achieve grain-sharp focusing not possible with a DSLR unless you have live view with digital magnification I didn't get that AT ALL… I don't have ANY problem focusing SHARP without live view or other stuff…
  12. No adapters, extension tubes, or additional gizmos of any kind are required to copy mounted slides. The ES-1 screws directly into the lens' 52mm filter thread. All you need is a DX body, the 40mm lens, and the ES-1. Nothing else. Really! - and for AF-S Micro 60mm & any FX body you need only BR-5 - 52-62mm, nothing else, for the old 55 micro you need extension tubes I never focus by sliding the ES-1 tube. I slide the tube only to adjust magnification. I focus the 40mm macro lens normally - exactly! Fiodor - if you want to see the full frame of the 35mm slide - you have to cut a little bit the edges of a single plastic frame - that's what I did, so that I could have the whole slide - from black to black the Coolscans also rely on the frame so you have automatically cropped file if you use normal frame, the negatives are full I think, I don't know how it would be the new holders of ES-2 I use f8 and honestly I don't see any focus problem on the edges
  13. Tom Halfhill - I personally don't like 'adjusting' such things myself, like you described and 'handmade' it… but… everyone is deciding for themselves I guess Nikon added extenders and adapters so that you can use the ES-2 set with all kind of lenses and bodies - DX/FX, & 40, 60, 85, 105 micro and etc… depending on what you have the ES-1 has ability to extend also, but for example not enough to use the 105 micro lens - beside the 1:1 magnification (that all new micro Nikon lenses have) the closest focusing distance mind too… also if you decide to use an FX lens on a DX body… I guess the new ES-2 set cover all options, including all kind of film (35mm)
  14. actually the ES-2 is a full set - In the Box Nikon ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter Set FH-4 Strip Film Holder FH-5 Slide Mount Holder 52mm Adapter Ring 62mm Adapter Ring so… I don't think ES-1 is better option, of course it's half the price, but still you need at least adapter rings and etc… and works only for framed slides
  15. Fiodor - what you talk about is more like a photoshop plug in, from Nikon, which could convert the negative images using the presets of the Coolscans, for example, or other similar method - indeed such thing would be great
  16. Fiodor - yes, the method is great for slides, not so much for negatives - black and white or colour at least that's what my experience shows and yet again you have to fight to get the right colours afterwards editing otherwise - you can make NEF files using the ES-1/2, but as I already said - the best result I get when using the HDR function in the 810 camera we have to wait to see exactly how this new feature is working in 850
  17. Rodeo_joe - you don't need to buy all that as you can rent equipment, but even if you buy it, you can use it for a lot more than scan - and also this is the price relatively of the Coolscans second hand already… here is the tests I made - D810 + AF-S Micro Nikkor 60mm + ES-1 + BR-5 - Google Drive the smaller photos are scans from Imacons, photo labs, Coolscans and etc… made in a period of more than 10 years, and the biggest one is from D810 - there is NEF and HDR - TIFF compartment series and also several tests of how colours are shifting as you use different colour modes - colour profiles
  18. ES-1 is very very good as I said, I use it already regularly for digitilizing my slides and the quality is better than scanning IMO but it is only for slides in frames, it was once originally created for duplicating slides, while ES-2 is made for stripes of negatives and framed slides - in this way it's better, it's more compatible, and in general will make the digitalising faster, especially if you use their auto option in JPEG I personally won't use it because my personal tests shows that the best result is obtained with the HDR function in the camera and in TIFF format in this case - as there is no NEF with HDR (I had posted all the results in an old thread) although my experience shows that Coolscan 9000 gives better result for BW negatives, still I consider buying also ES-2, because they are really well made - definitely better than the hand made myself 'something' in order to use ES-1 for negatives - I even cut ones a single negative to put it in frame just to test how it's working DSLR with negatives, but it is not a good choice indeed as you can't keep negatives that way as slides and if you decide scanning it afterwards you will have more problems - it's better to keep the stripes of course Nikon is thinking how to market the product and etc and it is not cheap but I personally think it's great that they really create good photo products useful for film users still… and in general and I definately don't think 20Mpx is the limit of 35mm film...
  19. about 200$ for the whole set - ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter from Nikon
  20. together with D850 they announce ES-2 also there is some kind of auto option working on the camera, directly through the live mode, but only in JPEGs looks great although I am quite happy with the ES-1 for slides, but negatives are better on Coolscan for the moment
  21. I am quite impressed from both films, but I would like to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of both…
  22. miracuosly I found a place here using another machine - something like Durst - I don't know if it's correct - and I am extremely happy! the process is the same and the photo print is great! the prices of these places posted above are way out of my budget… can you please recommend me also an online shop in England that sell Velvia? Thanks again :)
  23. Thank you! I need Chromira for large gallery size prints - like 90cm on the long side
